Since that time there have been over 3,000 recipients, including one woman, a twelve year old boy, a father and son, a US President, one conscientious objector, Buffalo Bill Cody and nineteen (19) two-time recipients. This episode features the incredible story of Smedley Darlington Butler (July 30, 1881 - June 21, 1940), nicknamed "The Fighting Quaker" and "Old Gimlet Eye". Butler was the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. During his 34-year career as a Marine, he participated in military actions in the Philippines, China, in Central America during the Banana Wars, the Caribbean and in France during World War I. By the end of his career Butler had received 16 medals, 5 of which were for heroism. He is one of 19 people to twice receive the Medal of Honor, one of 3 to be awarded both the Marine Corps Brevet Medal and the Medal of Honor, and the only person to be awarded the Brevet Medal and two Medals of Honor, all for separate actions.

He received the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military's highest award for valor, along with 32 additional U.S. and foreign medals and citations, including five from France and one from Belgium.
