In this continuation to the "Andy Griffifth Show", Sam Jones, a local farmer, is elected to the Mayberry town council. Like Andy Taylor, Sam is a widower raising a young son named Mike. Sam also hires Aunt Bee as his housekeeper after Andy marries his sweetheart Helen Crump and moves away. The show chronicles Sam's dealings with the citizens of Mayberry as well as his home life.

Martha Clark feels useless by not working, so she tells Emmett that she wants to open a boutique shop. Emmett doesn't think it's a good idea because she has no business experience. Emmett finally caves and agrees to come up with $500 so Martha can open up her shop. Emmett brags to Sam that he cleared $98 in a week, but then Martha comes into Emmett's shop and is excited to announce that she cleared $243 in her first week. Martha is so busy with her new business, she has to get Emmett to do the grocery shopping, and Emmett starts to feel inadequate. Martha realized that Emmett's male ego has been bruised, so she decides to stroke his ego.
