The cash is missing, but tracked to her ex-con boyfriend, a gambler named Tom Barnes. Meanwhile, Rusty finishes the formal and mental preparation for his own legal adoption by newly-divorced Sharon Raydor.

However the colleagues are eager to prove his innocence and catch the real killer, but protecting Julio against himself isn't easy either. Yet the local gang boss Javier Mendoza and his nephew Pablo are linked to the case. Meanwhile Rusty handles the arrival by kept key of Sharon's ex Jackson, who gets drunk and crashes on the couch after Rusty wisely confiscates his car keys.

With Stroh at large, Sharon puts Rusty under heavy police protection, which galvanizes the lad towards a resolute decision.
