The Major Crimes squad investigates an attempted robbery that led to several deaths, including some of the thieves. With Assistant Chief Johnson now retired, Lt. Provenza becomes the senior investigating officer. Newly promoted Assistant Chief Taylor is soon on the scene, as is Captain Sharon Raydor who, Taylor announces to everyone, now heads Major Crimes. Needless to say, this does not sit well with most members of the team. Matters only get worse when the one gunman arrested at the scene is killed while sitting in a police car awaiting transportation to the station. That event sets them on the path to solving the crime. Meanwhile, underage Rusty Beck, upset that Brenda is no longer around, wonders who will now be looking for his mother.

Studly personal trainer Chad Raber was found with his head smashed fatally with a dumbbell while hanging upside down in his gym. She and initial evidence point to vindictive father Jim Martino whose teen daughter Amanda was the only of his female clients who wanted to file a sexual abuse claim. Erased by cloud-retrievable videos point to nine other presumed victims, which looks like a set-up. Rusty protests and rebels the teen-way against his de-facto fostering by Raydor, but she raised two before and child services tell him to be happy it would be much worse elsewhere, office detective Buzz Watson is saddled with 'babysitting' him in the precinct. Provenza plans to resign as Raydor, who got his dream promotion, eagerly pushes on the deputy chief's plea bargain policy. .

Major Crimes investigates an accident in which an SUV crashes into a crowd waiting to get into a club. The driver of the car is a neuropsychiatric resident, Leslie Nolan, who has little memory of what happened. She had been out to dinner with her boyfriend and doesn't remember much after that. The boyfriend insists she only had one drink, though the restaurant bill suggests otherwise. Text messages on her phone suggest she was going to a rendezvous with her new boss--who has had two female subordinates file sexual harassment complaints against him. Sharon sets a trap for the most likely suspect. Meanwhile, Rusty's mother is found and he eagerly awaits her return. Will it live up to his hopes?

The team is investigating the murder of a man. They learn from the FBI that the man was involved with a man who's a drug smuggler and that he was going to testify against him and then enter the Witness Protection Program. They talk to his wife and son and when asked if they told anyone about it, the son mentions that his mother has a life coach whom she told. They get the man and learn that he wrote a script about the man and his associates. So the man he was going to testify against could have found out about it and had him killed. So they bring the man in who upon seeing the life coach reveals that the life coach has been having an affair with the man's wife among others. And Rusty begins going to school. But after one day he is brought to Raydor because he fought some other kids injuring them seriously.

The team investigates the murder of Ben Barlow, whose body is found in a barrel labeled 'hazardous waste'. He had been dead for only ten hours by the time he was found but had evidently been bound (judging from the rope burns on his wrists) and possibility tortured. He had also been shot, possibly when trying to escape from whomever was holding him. When the police try to inform parents Brian and Laurie Barlow of his death, it becomes apparent they have been dealing with a kidnapping and that their daughter Emily is missing as well. Brian Barlow works as a divorce attorney and the police quickly focus on Gerald Hall, ex-husband to one of Brian's clients. Meanwhile, Sharon learns that DNA may have identified Rusty's father.

Episode 6

The squad investigates the shooting death of 16-year-old Anthony Lewis, the star quarterback at Madison High School whom a patrol car finds dead in the front seat of his car. Assistant Chief Taylor fears this being gang-related, particularly as Anthony's brother Lamar is a highly-placed gang member. There have already been several racial incidents at Madison, and Taylor, whose son goes to that school, wants to ensure that it doesn't turn into a shooting gallery. Based on information from Anthony's coach, it appears that he was specifically targeted and the police begin to think it may be personal rather than gang-related. Rusty, meanwhile, seems completely uninterested in meeting his biological father, and Sharon wants to make sure he's making an informed decision.

Episode 7

The squad investigates the murder of Derek Hanson, a man who runs Shannon House, an organization dedicated to rescuing prostitutes who have been forced into the sex trade and cannot get out. He named Shannon House after his teen-aged sister who was killed when she tried to get away. Police, responding to the report of a young girl seen jumping from a window at the house, find Derek in his home office with his throat cut, neck broken and two other equally fatal stab wounds. From the evidence, it's not clear if Hanson was simply helping the girl or had other interests in these girls. When a State senator takes an interest in the case, he assigns his aide to monitor the investigation. The obvious suspect is the girl's pimp but he doesn't seem to be their man. They soon have another suspect. Meanwhile, Rusty's father shows up at the station wanting to meet his son.

One of Lt. Tao's old cases comes up when Will Reichman's conviction for murdering his wife is overturned on appeal, the result of newly discovered blood evidence. Reichman had been convicted largely on the testimony of his 10-year-old daughter, Lydia, who said she saw him stab her mother. The new blood evidence shows there was another person in the house, as Reichman had claimed. Sharon and the team begin looking for the man identified by the defense as the killer, Benito Zapata. When they find a connection between that Zapata and Lydia, the likelihood of guilt reverts back to the husband, Will. He can't be tried again for his wife's murder, but if he killed Zapata...... Meanwhile, Rusty and Sharon have dinner with his biological father.

Las Vegas Detective Mike Adams was killed by antifreeze in a nightclub, by drink spiking. His partner Richard Connor arrives for volunteered full collaboration. They worked on a masterly case of identity thefts for money laundering and to cash in fraudulent loans. yet the team expects he's not forthright about Mike's rapport with last interviewed victim Laura Elkins. Rusty reluctantly agreed to get to know his biological father and his new family on a weekend, nearly backs down as Dunn is repeatedly late and has a shocking experience.

Episode 10

The squad investigates what they believe is an assassination attempt on the city's next superintendent of education, Dr. Massoud, as he's about to be sworn in by highly respected Judge Howard Cully, with Cully shot, instead. It was a highly sophisticated attempt using state of art technology, and from the evidence they find in the shooter's lair, they think there may be a witness. They conclude that the judge may have been the intended victim all along and, working with the FBI, race to find the shooter before he gets at the witness. Meanwhile, Rusty's biological father wants to meet with him to apologize and Sharon agrees. She also has a plan that should take care of the situation for good.
