Magnum finds Higgins and the Dobermans no friendlier then before she promised 'considering' to become his detective partner, to the point of doubting the offer, and finds she has an offer to return to MI6. Juliett confides into Kumu to admire Thomas's genuine concern to help clients, not just for a living, while he races to the rescue of wheelchair-cripple Charlie Owens, who reports his suspiciously often absent wife Leanna missing. Bailed out of night jail for fighting with a rude client, Rick decides to stop managing is club while helping with TC and the helicopter to tail Leanna, a ban clerk, and the clumsy robber Dex Hollis whom she tracked down by his tattoo, but who resorts to more daring methods now. Regaining police detective Katsumoto isn't going well.

Magnum keeps nudging Higgins, who returned form London without deciding on an MI6 job, to become his P.I. partner instead. They reluctantly accept as client Jin, a kleptomaniac pickpocket, who shows them disturbing texts on a smartphone he 'found'. Rick has luck selling his restaurant business plan to a banker, with his recent petty conviction as frustrating obstacle, so veteran buddy T.C. offers to invest the profits from his helicopter business. Katsumoto still hasn't forgiven Thomas, but must get involved as he, Jin and Higgins come to face Nicky 'The Kid' DeMarco, a presumed-dead East Coast mob 'capo' and his goons.

Rick has started his restaurant and hired fellow veteran Noah, who is late for work because the car he sleeps in and all his possessions were stolen, which Katsumoto duly dismisses 'beneath my pay grade', so Thomas takes the case. In his absence, Higgins and Kumu receive Robin's guests, only to discover too late those are frauds who hacked themselves to fake invitations and take the ladies hostage in the wine cellar, with goon cahoots arriving. Higgins resists water torture, but not a threat for Kumu, to help them break into Robin's safe and discover the identity of the true life military model for his 'Whit knight' books hero- none other then Magnum. Thomas happens to arrive, spots the hostage situation but ends up overpowered, so a complex battle ensues between the fiends and the cunningly escaping P.I. partners until Katsumoto arrives, just behind Rick and T.C., once alerted. Higgins finally agrees to stay, now as Magnum's partner as well as Robin's Nest manager.

Thomas has his work cut out finding the right balance with new 'partner' Higgins, who even questions his pro bono generosity. Unlike Rick and Thomas, she has little true appreciation for American football, hence for the tickets T.C. got them for the visiting Los Angeles Rams, whose defender Aaron Donald hires Magnum to retrieve the tablet stolen from his hotel, which has the team game plans. However he gives priority to bidding for a make-up with grumpy Katsumoto, who refuses a freebie but hires Magnum to look into his suspicion that fellow detective Richard Johnson is the rotten apple who sabotages his upcoming trial by making evidence disappear from the precinct but lacks evidence to risk alerting I.A. Johnson catches them breaking in and proves innocent despite suspicious wealth, Katsumoto fires 'bumbling' Thomas but he persists to trap the real problem cop and his drug baron 'client'.

Katsumoto is duly worried that a psychopathic ax murderer escapes prison transport on Halloween, ideal to hide in disguise, which proves terribly dangerous, especially for his rookie partner Pono Palima. Thomas looses the toss which client to take- he must help kleptomaniac Jin look for the 'best friend' he posted bail for. Higgins won, so she gets to mount night watch with eager volunteer Rick in a Honolulu 'haunted house', where the senior owner worries about nocturnal noises, which turn out feline, but they flippantly fail to see the real danger lurking around. TC.C. and Kumu mount guard at an accidentally discovered native altar, telling ghost stories.

Magnus is surprised his lawyer lover Abby Miller didn't come to him in the first place when fellow P.I. Harry Brown asks him and Higgings to take over the case. It's the search for the corpse of Tabitha Hall, the alleged victim of best-selling literature professor Neal Conlan, who she got off with a hung jury on murder trial. The prosecutor doesn't plan a re-trial, but a corpse would force him, hence is the opposite of Abby's ethical and professional duty. They even suspects him of a second murder, based on the details in his crime novels. He covered his tracks expertly, so they set a trap to make him check on the corpse, but he uses a drone and the evidence isn't enough even with a second body. After the sleuths realize the literary motive, Kumu volunteers to impersonate Tabitha's mother as bait, pretending she is selling incriminating letters. Justice comes at a cruel price.

Russell Harlan hires Magnum to take over interim his job as head of hotel security. After solving the case of the missing wallet, he calls Higgins and Katsumoto to investigate the suspicious fall from her hotel balcony of undercover reporter Georgia Preston, suicide nor accident. Searching what she was watching leads to the hotel's well-hidden 'private' bungalow, where Thomas's improvised black light shows there has been a second, bloody murder. Magnum's new hotel colleague also helps him work out it served as move nest for Nicky 'The Kid' DeMarco and mob lord Tony Zhao's wife Mia. Rick is puzzled by uncle Francis 'Icepick' Hofstetler's early prison release, alas on medical grounds.

Magnum doesn't hesitate nor consult Higgings before accepting the case of jailed Jason Levner, whose wife cruise ship attendant Lani hires them to hastily retrieve the now stolen fortune in cash drug money she must deliver in another port or he'll be dealt with in jail. Time runs out as they confront possible drug thugs, but Katsumoto catching them proves crucial for all. Accompanying their handicapped vet mate Jonah to a support group, Rick and T?C. discover that popular speaker Daniel Skordi is an impostor, who stole the identity of his deceased Marines squad comrade without malice.

As Thomas preferred to postulate as bodyguard, his mentor Harry Brown takes over the search for an alternative heir to the Waiola fortune, but gets stabbed, possibly fatally, in the process. Returning to the case with Higgins, and Katsumoto as Harry was a retired cop, he too starts at known heir Gavin, but spots at neighbor Melinda Mosley's home a pink kid's bike which strikes among Harry's research pictures. Like Harry, he realizes that a shed fitted as child's cell was used in the case of a missing girl, but her corpse is found buried inside way ago, so there must be another abduction; Isabella's record, which Gordon obtains illegally, shows her psychotic and off medication, and she moved.

Returning to the mansion, they find it was broken into and the security video shows Kumu abducted by Milo Rivers, whom the police is hunting down after his conviction for his wife's brutal murder. He's wounded and convinces Kumu his wife reformed him, he's innocent and she ends up promising Magnum will find the true killer while she helps him hide, but his wound means fleeing is no longer a real option. Magnum joins force with Katsumoto to select and trap the murderer from Milo's former cahoots.

Higgins's temporary visa expired, so Thomas proposes a green card marriage, but she hesitates. Rick fails to talk regular bar client Eddie Butler out of cashing in on people mistaking him for sports star Andre Reed.

When an irregular customer dies in Rick's pub, he and T.C. try to identify him, like Katsumoto.

Rick catches his terminal-cancer surrogate father Francis 'Icepick' Hofstetler preparing to do a 'last easy robbery' with a jail mate and believes to have stopped him, only to find him wounded after it went wrong. Icepick refuses to go to hospital and Katsumoto confirms Rick risks being accused of complicity by silence, so Magnum accepts to trail the fiend, but the case proves complicated. Meanwhile Magnum, who can't learn to control the guard dogs, plays his last card to avoid Higgins having to leave due to visa troubles: Robin Masters' lawyers, who come up with an unorthodox solution, leaving Magnum with mixed feelings.
