During the Suez Crisis of 1956, two young clerks at the stuffy Foreign Office in Whitehall display little interest in the decline of the British Empire. To their eyes, it can hardly compete with girls, rock music (including "Lay Down Your Arms"), and the intrigue of romantic entanglements.

Episode 1
A group of British military officers and men toil away at Whitehall in the mid-1950s compiling data to be used for a battle plan to counter the Soviet Union. The enlisteds are mostly bored to distraction. One of them (Hopper) is getting ready to be demobilized and his replacement arrives near the end of the day. Francis speaks Russian non-fluently and seems intimidated by the men in his new office, especially a corporal. He moves in with his Aunt Vicky who is conducting an ongoing feud with upstairs neighbor Sylvia, a voluptuous blonde Francis immediately becomes infatuated with. Later Francis hears Sylvie and her husband fighting, and then fornicating in the upstairs hall, and realizes - to his horror - that the husband is the corporal he met earlier in the day.
