DCI Jo Davidson receives new information about the whereabouts of a suspect in the unsolved murder of investigative journalist Gail Vella. En route to raid the property, she spots an armed robbery in progress and stops the convoy. Suspicious of her motives, AC-12 launch an investigation. Still dealing with the fallout from their explosive investigation into undercover officer John Corbett, AC-12 soon realise they are facing their most enigmatic adversary yet.

Steve and Chloe dig into Gail Vella's controversial reporting for clues to her murder, and find links to previous AC-12 cases. Their investigation takes a shocking turn when they begin to scrutinise Jo's personal life.

Buckells is interviewed and charged by AC-12. Wise informs Hastings AC-12 must merge with AC-3 and AC-9 to form one unit and to reduce the staff by 90%, he is offered early retirement to avoid further disciplinary action. A betting shop robber is interviewed by Lomax and Fleming in gathering more information about firearms. As forensic analysis at Jatri's home is completed, Davidson watches before sending another message through her laptop, "I'm finished". Arnott asks DI Rogerson to hold off and deletes emails from Occupational Health about his drug test. Arnott recognizes the voice of jailed solicitor Jimmy Lakewell on a recording from Vella's office. Davidson tells Ryan Pilkington she will complete his commendation by Bucknell but honorably discharge him from her team, Arnott learns about his juvenile criminal past and police protector. Arnott and Bishop interview Lakewell in prison, but he's afraid to talk. In moving him into secure custody, the OCG ambush the convoy, PS Ruby Jones is killed by a sniper, whom Arnott kills with his handgun. Pilkington explains to Davidson why he will not be removed from Operation Lighthouse. Lakewell is murdered by OCG prisoner Lee Banks, cellmate Buckells watching. Forensic results from Jatri's house reveal Davidson's fingerprints were found, but that a DNA test found a match to a nominal located on other police databases.

AC-12 link Gail Vella's murder with a historic case of police corruption, and Kate hatches a plan to tell once and for all if Jo is bent. They are closer than ever to cracking the case, but when Hastings' authority is undermined it leaves his team in a potentially dangerous situation.

At the industrial estate, AC-12 find Ryan Pilkington, murdered with two gunshot wounds to the chest. Having fled, Fleming and Davidson go to Arnott's home and take his car. Davidson tells Fleming to search the shuttered print shop opposite Boyle's flat. Immediately ambushed by police vehicles, they must surrender. Carmichael assumes control of absorbed AC-12, telling Hastings they were detected so quickly because AC-12 vehicles have tracking devices, as she nor Chief Constable Osborne trusted them. Interviewed first, and shaken to learn the truth of her parentage, Davidson keeps answering 'no comment' and covers for Fleming pretending she had shot Pilkington whilst disarming her. Davidson shares details of coercion by the OCG, although Carmichael tries to steer away from this. Carmichael terminates the interview, Davidson is charged. Fleming is released, now the most senior officer in the MIT, and with Arnott orders the floor to the weapons workshop excavated. Bishop calls them back to AC-12, while police in Spain raiding Thurwell's suspected residence find two decomposed bodies. Being taken to her prison cell, Davidson is confronted by two OCG prison guards, who note the two CCTV cameras monitoring the entrance to her cell and retreat.
