Line of Duty
Line of Duty follows Detective Seargent Steven "Steve" Arnott (Martin Compston), a former authorized firearms officer who led an operation to catch an Islamic terrorist intending to detonate a bomb, but the strike team mistakenly entered the wrong apartment and shot dead an unarmed innocent man. In the subsequent investigation, Arnott refused to cover up negligence in the planning and execution of the raid and unable to work in his unit anymore, Arnott receives a transfer to AC-12, a unit tasked with uncovering police corruption. Arnott is partnered with Detective Constable Kathrine "Kate" Fleming (Vicky McClure)), a highly commended undercover officer with a keen investigative instinct. They work under the supervision of Superintendent Edward "Ted" Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), who is one of several Senior Investigating Officers responsible for uncovering corruption within the police force. Throughout the series, AC-12 investigate seemingly disparate cases involving seemingly corrupt police officers, with each series focusing on a different corrupt officer and AC-12 soon realize the pervasive nature of corruption and the police's deep-rooted links to an organized crime group with ties to drug running, prostitution, child exploitation and people trafficking.

Police sergeant Danny Waldron shoots unarmed criminal Ronan Murphy dead and, when his colleagues arrive on the scene, tells them it was an act of self defence, insisting they back him up. A witness disputes his account and he comes before the anti-corruption unit led by Ted Hastings, who is unimpressed by Waldron's arrogance. Kate goes undercover with his team, noting that officer Hari Bains is the weak link, though he will not testify against Waldron. Kate then joins the team's assault on a house, ending in bloodshed.

The Process

Following Waldron's mysterious death all three of his colleagues claim that he shot himself but Kate and Ted Hastings are not convinced. The trio clearly are hiding something, something which leads to a disastrous consequence for one of them. A search of Waldron's flat reveals evidence - suppressed by Cottan - he was sending Steve Arnott leads to the discovery of another murder victim, related to the man Waldron shot. At the same time Steve finds himself still involved in the trial of Lindsay Denton.

Snake Pit

Jackie and Hari tell the AC Unit that Rod killed Danny Waldron but the team are not convinced and later Jackie changes her story, incriminating Hari in Danny and Rod's deaths. As a result Hari goes on the run and Cottan is declared an unlikely hero. Steve finds out from Joe Nash, who was in care with Waldron, that they were abused at a home for boys, whose staff numbered the Murphys, the two recent victims and he also learns the result of Lindsay's retrial.

Negative Pressure

Steve is stunned by the aftermath of Lindsay's trial and he and the unit are deceived when Hari is brought in for a double murder. Steve learns from girl-friend Sam the connection between Ronan Murphy and Lindsay's dead informant Tommy Hunter, leading Kate to visit Nigel Morton - a man who consequently goes to see Cottan, who then conducts another underhand deal. In trying to discover more about the sex abuse scandal Kate and Steve call on retired officer Patrick Fairbank, though he is somewhat evasive about the case and gives away nothing.

Commended for bravery Cottan continues to suggest to Gill and Kate that the rogue officer suppressing information from the sex abuse case and its link to the deaths of Danny and Lindsay's informant is Steve - who is suspended from duty. Teaming up with Lindsay he tries to discover the reason for Danny's death but their partnership is brought to an abrupt end. Fairbank is also brought in, regarding the murder of the whistle blower at the care home where the abuse was investigated and, whilst he is released for lack of evidence, Joe seems to know better.

Breach

Joe 's testimony allows Ted and Kate to bring in Fairbank whilst an email from Lindsay spells trouble for Steve, who finds himself accused of murder. He is however able to persuade Ted that other colleagues have sequestered vital evidence in respect of Danny's list of the sex abuse suspects. This in turn puts Cottan in the frame as being in collusion with the child abusers and, before the end titles inform us of the fate of the different characters, a dramatic shoot-out brings matter to a close.
