Les Norton's country boy who has escaped a troubled past to find himself in Sydney, working as a bouncer/fixer at the city's most notorious illegal casino in 1985. You Wouldn't Be Dead For Quids

In Sydney to avoid the Bender Boys, from Dirranbandi, Les Norton has found work at The Kelly Club, run by Price Galese. Working as a doorman at the club, Les proves his worth when a group of bikies make trouble. Les meets the local cop on the payroll, Sgt Ray 'Thumper' Burrell, and probationary constable Emily Gold. Coming to the attention of management, Les is introduced to his boss, Price Galese. Les proves his mettle under Price's interrogation. Leaving the club after work, manageress Georgie hands Les the address to her girlfriend Lozza's place in Bondi, where there is a room to rent. Back at his current doss, a backpackers in Sydney's King Cross, he settles in for the night. Only to be rudely awoken in the morning by an unknown man in a leather coat, with an order to come with him. Leather coat turns out to be Price's fixer Eddie Salita, ex special forces and afraid of very little. Les has impressed Price, and Price wants him to help Eddie with a bit of business. Mayhem ensues, and Les and Eddie take care of business. The end result being unknown to Les. With the main protagonist missing, the authorities are in a panic, and the first person they confront is Price, who claims no knowledge of what they are asking him about. Meanwhile, Les babysits Constable Gold at the front door, and with a sinking feeling, finds out the reason for their visit. Price speaks to him at the door, and settles his fears. A phone call home to his brother Muzza, ensures Les continues his stay in Sydney.
