Episode 1

Beginning with a flashback to 1998, a young Lazarus is awakened and, standing in the hallway is knocked down by a masked man, fleeing. He then finds his 18-year-old twin sister lying dead on the floor, having been murdered. He races to confront his father at his office. In present day, Dr. Lazarus then meets with a new patient, a serial killer, who threatens him. Afterwards in the hallway, he answers a call where his sister informs him his father has committed suicide with a gun. When he arrives home, he and his sister puzzle over a cryptic suicide note and the fact that his father never owned a gun. He meets his childhood friend Seth, a policeman, in a dive bar for drinks. He sees his ex-wife Bella who is now remarried. Afterwards, Joel then walks alone to his father's office where he falls asleep in a chair. He awaken when a woman, Cassandra. arrives for an appointment. As she sits down, she acts as if Joel is his father. She then reiterates some recent thoughts about murder of her boyfriend Neil. She also complains of a male stalker. She disappears in the middle of their therapy session, leaving Joel very puzzled. On returning to his father's office, he researches Cassandra, finding her medical record. The record shows the case was closed in December 1999. He drives to her old residence. He finds out from another apartment resident that Cassandra was murdered over 20 years ago. On searching his phone, he finds that her murder is still unsolved. Joel attends his father's funeral with his sister. Afterwards, he discovers that Bella's son was outside. When he speaks to him, he warns him about returning, that he is in danger. Later that night he meets Seth in a bar and receives the police file on Cassandra, an unsolved murder. On returning to his car, he suspects he is being followed. So he walks past his car and tries to confront the man who simply starts running. He almost catches him as he jumps over the wall into a cemetery. Looking around inside, something lights up, and he discovers his sister's gravestone elaborately laid with flowers and fairy lights. His stalker is seen watching him from the shadows. And his father's office, he has a vision of his father, speaking about murder victims, such as Cassandra and others. He also implies that he also is a murder victim.

Lazarus leaves a note for his sister saying he has to leave. He packs and drives away. But he changes his mind and returns. He presents a theory to his sister that the suicide note is incomplete. Driving along, he stops to defend a young boy who is being bullied by school kids. Joel starts looking at the old Cassandra police file. He then has another session with Cassandra who brought along her boyfriend Neil who accuses Cassandra of having a mother who is a whore. Joel then sees Cassandra split his head open with a statue. On returning to Cassandra's old apartment, Joel discovers the cast statue which he remembers from his father's office. He allows Joel to examine some things she left behind in his attic and they discover a secret, boarded-up room there which holds a skeleton. The police remove the body and question Joel. He later tries to re-create a session with Seth in the office. When Seth leaves for the loo, Joel's father appears to Joel. Later, he visits the home of the man arrested as a suspect in his sister's murder, Joel speaks to him about the night Sutton died. He mentions he saw her leave with Billy. We see Seth receiving a gunshot residue report with Joel's name on it. When Joel enters his father's office, he sees his murdered sister sitting in his father's chair. She greets him "Hi, Dad" in a cliffhanger.

Joel is in his father's office seeing Sutton, his dead sister. As she talks, Joel realizes that the dance is tonight, the night her sister was murdered. Sutton tells him she is breaking up with Billy tonight. Joel goes to see Billy McIntyre, Sutton's old boyfriend. He is the publisher of a horror comic book. Billy comments he has recently been in the Caribbean. Billy's mother Margot happens to be the old receptionist for his father's office. Billy insists that Sam Olson's story about the two of them fighting the night of her murder was incorrect, that they never broke up and were very happy. Billy is then seen sketching a stool very similar to the one on Joel's father suicide note. Seth then informs Joel that gunshot residue was found on his father's hands. Joel finds remnants of blood splatter and a pool of blood in his father's office. Harry Nash then comes for a session. He is afraid of someone he has filed a police report on, saying he is evil. Joel finds his father's file showing Harry was murdered by his priest. When Joel sees a picture of the priest, he recognizes him. He was a prisoner in a locked psychiatric hospital. We see a video of the priest swearing he didn't kill Harry. Then we see him committing suicide off of the building last year. During his talk with his father, he discovered his father helped cover up the Cassandra's murder of Neil as it occurred in his office during a session. Jenna tells Joel the office lease is up in week, he admits to her about the sessions. Jenna and Joel visit the office, but Jenna is unable to connect. Laura, a psychiatrist and a new patient, then shows up for a session after Jenna leaves. Joel discovers Billy's sketchbook with the stool on the cover. Billy calls it a dolmen, or portal to the next life. He then admits to Joel he knew about the breakup and, wanting to hurt Sutton, he cheated on her with her sister Jenna the night of the dance. Jenna is then seen with bloody hands finding Sutton's body, casting suspicion on her for the murder.

Joel confronts Jenna, who claims she was drunk and doesn't remember everything. Joel was not aware she was at home when Sutton got murdered. At the dive bar, Joel sees a woman from his visions. He follows her. But she turns out to be real, and they chat a bit over a drink. Margot turns up in the office as a vision. The time-line turns out to be a week before the dance. She is there to complain to Joel's father about her son who is dating his daughter Sutton. Billy evidently stole his mother's building pass and has been stalking the doctor's patients. She talks about getting him professional help. Joel rushes over to Margo's house. When she doesn't answer, he breaks in and looks around. He hears some rustling and grabs a pair of scissors to arm himself but only finds a black cat. He finds Aiden has followed him into the house. At the police station, Joel shows up and speaks to Detective Brown. His father tells Joel he had suspicions about Billy the night of the dance, which is why he asked Joel to walk her home. Police organize a search of a local wooded park to see if they can find Margo, who has vanished. Joel helps search and finds her dog Teddy. He also finds Billy nearby with a baseball bat and a gang about to ambush Sam. He tries to stop them but is knocked over a small cliff. He turns over find Margo's body nearby. Billy is arrested for assault. Sam is hospitalized but okay otherwise. He thanks Joel for his help. Aiden stops to talk. He tells Sam he did a DNA test and says he is his dad. They have an emotional talk. Joel goes to see Laura to ask about therapy for himself. He then goes down to the police station where he's interviewed by Detective Brown who suspects him. She admits that she's been tailing him but realizes he didn't murder Margo. Seth shares information that Billy was in rehab when Joel's father committed suicide. Joel's father had referred him to rehab for benzodiazepine addiction as Billy had been stealing these pills from his father's office. The night of the dance, Billy had spiked Jenna's drink, which helped him set up the Jenna kiss at the dance. He tells Jenna to help her get over her guilt. They watch family videos together. Then, Joel sees the stuffed dog that was in Sam's house the night Joel visited. He guesses that Sam stole the stuffed toy dog the night he murdered Sutton.

Aiden visit the cemetery and Sutton's grave. A very drunk Joel tries to confront Sam at the hospital but Jenna refuses to let him drive. In the middle of the night. they call Seth and tell him about the evidence. When they arrive at the hospital, Sam has left. When they get a warrant, they go to his house but he's gone. Young Joel appears before Joel at his father's office. He talks about the guilt about his sister's murder. His father admits he was not supportive enough when Joel went looking for his help. When the police tell Joel Sam was seen leaving the city on CCTV, Joel searches for Arctic char fishing and discovers a location called Tallwater. He finds Sam with Aiden beside a lake fishing. Joel tell Aiden to go to the car. Sam then claims he's been tending Sutton's grave and that he loved her. Olson admits he used a hidden key to break into their house that night to see her room. He stole the toy. Then Sutton came home early. He saw her bumping into him as a come-on. But when he heard Joel come home early, Sam then killed Sutton. As Joel and Sam fight in the shallows of the lake, they try to kill each other. At one point, Aiden jumps in, trying to protect his father. Finally, the police arrive and take Sam into custody. Later, Bella tells Joel they can keep in touch as Aiden is having some psychological issues. When Joel is told by the police Sam was not his father's murderer, it is hard for him to accept suicide. He goes to his father's office and has a session encounter with a murder victim of Arlo, the serial killer he is treating. Then Arlo shows up and Joel is just able to lock him inside the office and call the hospital to check if he is still alive, or a ghost. Revisiting the purported suicide note, we then see someone burning the first page Joel thinks existed. We see it turns out to be-Detective Brown.

Back at the office, as he's on the phone to the psychiatric hospital, Arlo is sitting quietly in his cell. He looks at his hand, which had received a laceration during their fight, and that has vanished along with vision. Joe visited Arlo at the hospital. He insists he was framed by the lead detective for Imogen Carswood's murder. Joel realizes that was Detective Brown. The murder weapon was an illegal imported weapon called a "Dragon Apex." He makes a date with Laura to help him search his father's files for Detective Brown's investigation into his patients. They find suspicious information. He then confronts Seth who refuses to believe him at first. They then set up a meet with Detective Brown. When Seth steps away from the table after a short discussion, she turns the table over on Joel and runs away after she tasers Seth. This leads to a high-speed car chase where she crashes and runs on foot. He follows. She is knocked down by a bicycle, and then a bus runs over her body. We then see a scene at the table before she left where she shows him audio tape, and begs him to stop digging, that the tape will cause him too much pain. We also see he lifts the tape off her body in the street. Aiden drops in on Laura. Joel returns to his father's office and plays the tape. On the tape, detective brown, confronts, his father over cases with on which they collaborated. She accuses him of strangling Imogen, which he claims was a mercy killing as she was dying. She tells him that she can't let it go. She places a revolver on the desk, telling him he should write a note. He says he hopes he is reunited with Sutton, his daughter. He is seen dialing his phone when his son ignores his call. He writes a note. He places the gun in his mouth and fires. He then appears to his son as a vision and goes through his murders, including Cassandra. His father says the stool symbol means that time is cyclical not linear. He believes son become their fathers. He says goodbye and hugs him. Joel drops by Laura's home and finds Laura gone but Aiden there, standing with the curved dragon blade weapon.
