Season 9 of the veteran crime drama witnesses several major cast changes: Vincent D'Onofrio (Goren), Kathryn Erbe (Eames) and Eric Bogosian (Ross) depart early on; Saffron Burrows joins as Det. Serena Stevens, the new partner of holdover Det. Zack Nichols (Jeff Goldblum); and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio signs on as Capt. Zoe Callas, the new Major Case Squad chief. What doesn't change, however, are the complicated cases themselves. Among them: the shooting death of a police officer; the death of a ballerina; the murder of an escort; a magazine publisher's death; and a possible copycat killing. Guest stars include F. Murray Abraham, Lorraine Bracco, Dan Lauria, Ralph Macchio, William Mapother and Tracy Pollan.
