The eighth season of the crime drama sees Jeff Goldbum joining the cast as Zack Nichols, who partners with Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson) to investigate an assortment of crimes for the NYPD's Major Case Squad. The episodes alternate between them and fellow detectives Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe), though Eames fills in for an absent Wheeler toward the end of the season. Among the crimes tackled: the shooting deaths of a councilman's stepdaughter and her boyfriend; the stabbing death of an artist; the death-by-electrocution of a woman with schizophrenia; the murder of a celebrity chef's girlfriend; and the death of a popular male model. Guest stars include Kathy Baker, Piper Perabo and Lynn Redgrave.
