In post Civil War Arizona territory, a former Confederate officer, Hondo Lane, becomes a scout attached to Fort Lowell. Apache are attacking soldiers and settlers. He also meets a pretty young widow and her son.

As part of the peace talks with the Apache the army has set up a demonstration of the talking wires. During the demonstration the wires are cut by renagade Indians led by a half breed Apache named Delgado to undermine the telegraph. Hondo was ambushed and chased by the renagades. During the chase Hondo was shot but he was released because he wore the eagle claw given to him by Vitorio. As he rides to help he stubbles upon a cabin that is Inhabited by a doctor on the run. Once healthy Hondo promises the doctor to keep his secret and returned to the fort. On a mission to catch Delgado, the Captain is shot and Hondo has to decide whether to keep his word to the doctor or save the Captain's life and risk having the doctor's secret discovered or let the Captain die. The remainder of the group takes the Captain to the doctor where several interesting twist take place.

Vitorio gives permission for the army to take a survey of Superstition Mountain. The stage arrives and the engineer disembarked Hondo starts to assault him without explanation. He is knocked out and jailed. When he awakens he is confronted by the Captain and the engineers wife who both want to know why. It turns out that the engineer lead the raid that killed Hondo's wife and several other women and children. While Hondo and the engineer are off alone survey the rest of the party is attacked. All the soldiers are killed and the engineer's wife is taken.

While watching a beautiful stallion being tracked by two white horse traders Hondo witnesses an Apche brave appear hidden buried from beneath dirt and shrubs catch the stallion before the two white horse traders. Still out of sight of the three men Hondo stopped the two from taking prized horse from the young brave. The brave then gives Hondo the stallion as a gift. Once returning to the fort with the horse Hondo finds a visiting General from Washington who was known as the Book General. After a fight involving Hondo, the Apache, and the two hoese traders this General orders that the Apache is whipped because he was thrown into him as the fight ended, stating that the Indian attacked him. Hondo attempted to talk the General out of the punishment but he carried through while six of his braves watched. Later while out looking for locations for new outpost the squad led by the General and Hondo are surrounded by the Apache and they demanded that to spare the lives of the remainder of the asquad that the General surrender to be equally punished as the Apache had been. After a showing of compassion but a little humility the General is released but in his anger and pride the General orders that the Apache be attacked. Before launching his attack the General has a change of heart.

While under escort of two Army soldiers from the fort to Yuma, Arizona to be tried for murder, the Apache Kid overcomes the soldiers and escapes. Hondo and Buffalo Baker are dispatched to bring the kid in.

When the cavalry decides to confiscate the guns of the Apache, Chief Vittoro vows to resist. Hondo becomes involved when he encounters unscrupulous weapon dealers, and a temporary replacement for Colonel Crook who does not share his understanding of the situation.

Meanwhile, blonde-haired Angie is threatened by Teresa, Rodrigo's murderously jealous girlfriend, who, feeling that Angie's presence is threatening her relationship with her boyfriend, will do anything to get her out of the way.

An aging mayor is convinced by his scheming advisor to participate in a scheme in the founding a never-heard-of town by finding silver in an abandoned silver mine. Unbeknownst to everyone (with the exception of Hondo and Buffalo), the silver mine is located in Native Indian territory. When a local town drunk is found dead and scalped, everyone points at the Indians. Only Hondo sees a flaw in the drunk's death and his suspicions lead him to uncovering a dark motive behind the scheme.
