
Hetty Wainthropp Investigates
In order to make ends meet, and to stop a local teenage runaway from becoming a juvenile delinquent, Hetty Wainthropp, a sprightly and intelligent 60-year-old pensioner looking for a new challenge, decides to become a private investigator much to the chagrin of her unemployed husband. Once she makes up her mind, she becomes an unstoppable force, and, led by Hetty, the three set forth to investigate crimes of less interest to the local police force in and around their little village in the beautiful Lancashire countryside.

Something to Treasure

Stuart Pridwell is killed in a rock fall after telling his wife Moira he was going to retrieve buried treasure from a disused mine shaft. Moira calls in Hetty to locate precious stones believed to be buried in one of two mine chambers but when Hetty and Geoffrey go underground they find only a locker key belonging to surly miner Jack Duckett. Duckett has been set up and the stones already taken. In identifying the culprit Hetty realises that the motive was an affair of the heart,rather than greed.

Tom Carter approaches Hetty with claims that his brother Harry was murdered by housekeeper Ella Parsons,who had been systematically robbing him. Hetty sends Robert in to pose as a wheelchair-bound long lost relative of the deceased with Geoffrey as his chauffeur. It becomes clear that Ella is not the person she claimed to be though she soon tumbles to the real cause for Robert's presence. However she is not the only person not to have been honest with the Wainthropps.

Elderly Enid Weston refuses to leave the crumbling tenement Glebe Hamlets,which Gordon Gregson wants to demolish to make way for Yuppy flats. Enid is anxious to prove that Glebe Hamlets,also built by Gregson,was built on subsiding land and was unfit for occupation from the start. Hetty investigates,refusing a huge bribe from Gregson to back off but eventually proves her case with evidence from beyond the grave.

Mind over Muscle

Dawn Halliwell, Hetty's hairdresser,asks her to find out why her husband Russ was beaten up by Dean Scholes, a total stranger, in a pub rest room. Calling at the DIY warehouse where Russ works Hetty finds a link between Scholes and Martin Kenyon, who has discovered Russ's affair with his wife. Scholes,in return for sorting Russ out, is now blackmailing Kenyon into allowing him to carry out a heist at the warehouse. Fortunately Janet has just started work there and,when Scholes seems likely to escape after Hetty and Geoffey close in on him, comes to the rescue with a fork-lift truck. Afterwards Geoffrey moves in with her.

Hetty goes to visit a long lost cousin in a small fishing village near Whitby. She soon finds a client - an elderly lady who is being troubled by mysterious sounds of a dog barking. Meanwhile back home Robert plans an exposé on a local building firm - but are his facts correct - and Janet is having problems with an obnoxious neighbour who won't take no for an answer.

Robert's brother Frank asks Hetty to trace Marianne,daughter of his old flame Violet, who has disappeared after a row with Jack Branagan, manager of a Victorian living museum where she worked. Hetty discovers that Marianne seems to have deliberately planned her vanishing as she is sending gifts of cheese to her cat-sitter and eventually she is located at a cheese factory run by an old friend Michael. He tells Hetty that Branagan's sexual harassment of Marianne when they worked for a local council led to her losing her job and she was anxious to get even with him. However, Marianne disappears again and Hetty, Geoffrey, Janet, Robert and Frank all don period costume to prevent her from doing something drastic at an open evening at the museum.
