With far too many events occupying Joanie's free time, Chachi starts to resent her for not focusing on their relationship. After much thought, both come up with solutions to the problem. Chachi thinks they should get married but at the same time Joanie wants to break up with him, much to Chachi's visible disappointment. Is this the end of Joanie and Chichi's love story?

After tricking Fonzie into going to a single's camp to help him get over losing steady girlfriend Ashley, Potsie, Chachi and Roger get suckered into a sauna by three con-girls.

Richie and Lori Beth (along with their son, Richie Jr.), plus Ralph arrive home from the Army to a rousing homecoming celebration. But as everyone celebrates good times and fond memories, it becomes obvious Richie's dreams have changed. Sure, Howard gets Richie a job at the Milwaukee Journal, and despite Richie's tepid interest, seems to be doing a good job. But Richie confides in several people that his future plans have a different path than everybody else expects or wants: screen writing. Marion learns about this and becomes very upset, leading to a huge argument between mother and son.

Richie bottles up his emotions as he continues to hold his day job as a reporter at the Milwaukee Journal. Eventually, his emotions boil over at the dinner table, and he storms out of the house. Fonzie decides to go after his friend and try to calm him down, and eventually tracks him down to a tavern. This time, Richie - who plans to get drunk - refuses to buy into the "talk to Fonzie and it will be all better" routine, and slugs the Fonz. Fonzie keeps his cool, however and tells him he needs to air his concerns appropriately with his mother. After a good night's sleep, Richie shares his feelings with Marion and convinces her that he's ready to make whatever sacrifices he needs to for his dream to come true. Marion still has her reservations about the idea of Richie pursuing what appears to be a difficult dream, but accepts the fact that Richie's future is in screen writing. Howard accepts too, and after a couple of weeks, everyone shares an emotional farewell.

Fonzie offers to have his shop students build it for him which would include Howard's new invention/tank attachment "The Whisper-Flush".

Joanie is ecstatic when she learns she has been approved to enter a student teaching agreement. Howard and Marion, however, become gravely concerned when they learn Joanie will be teaching at Patton High, a school, despite the best efforts of Roger and Fonzie, that is notorious for poor academics and overall disorder. However, Fonzie convinces everyone that Joanie will do fine. However, the students in Joanie's English class refuse to learn except for one ... a student named Frankie. Frankie asks Joanie for help on an upcoming assignment and she agrees. However, she is unaware that Frankie has sinister ulterior motives. After an attempt to get at her at home fails (the others quickly become wise to him and kick him out), Frankie makes his move on Joanie in an empty classroom. The fire alarm goes off, and everyone except Frankie leaves. Before Joanie can leave, Frankie locks the door, corners his teacher and tries to kiss her against her will. Just then, Fonzie barges in and runs Frankie off. Fonzie is left to console a shaken Joanie, who is sure her teaching career has ended before it began. However, Fonzie convinces her nothing that happened was her fault, and that during her career she will have to deal with "students" (i.e., hoodlums) whose only reason for going to school is starting trouble.

His friends are baffled when Fonzie refuses to speak in his own defense after he is accused of manhandling a student and brought before the school board's disciplinary court.

While Fonzie is working late at the garage to restore a wrecked 1955 Chevrolet convertible, a beautiful young woman named Nancy Haley walks in. Nancy explains she is stranded and needs a ride home. Fonzie obliges, and when he returns to her house a few days later is met by the puzzled woman. She explains that Nancy doesn't live there, but that the couple who lived there previously had a daughter who was killed in a car accident about 10 years earlier and that the family had since moved away. Fonzie goes to the Cunninghams to get an explanation, but they just laugh at him. Later, at the garage, Nancy returns and asks Fonzie to take her for a ride in the newly restored car. He agrees, but the car soon stalls on a set of railroad tracks. Fonzie is unable to get the car restarted and there's a train approaching. However, Nancy is in no hurry to let Fonzie escape the car. Just as the train strikes the car, Fonzie wakes up in his rusted car shell and realizes he was only dreaming. He quickly retracts his earlier remark about how he wishes it was 1955 forever.
