There could hardly be an odder match, but love knows no reason. Assistant D.A. Greg Montgomery, the son of successful businessman Edward and Kitty, the queen of socialite snob-ism, falls madly in love with the utterly unconventional free spirit Dharma Finkelstein, the daughter of hippie couple Abby O'Neil and Larry Finkelstein. The in-laws never agree on anything and stir up trouble as they're shocked by each other's lifestyles. Greg's lazy, incompetent colleague Pete Cavanaugh and Dharma's odd friend Jane likewise develop improbably chemistry as they observe their friends' relationship.

Alonzo Sparks is a lawyer who has a practice in Compton. His two sons Maxie and Greg join the practice. Maxie is basically an "ambulance chaser" who doesn't do things by the book. Greg is the complete opposite but lacks self-confidence. Wilma Cuthbert is an attractive lawyer who joins the practice and the boys battle over her. Denice is Alonzo's secretary and Lamarr is their errand boy.

Sammo Law (Sammo Kam-Bo Hung), a top flight cop and hand to hand combat instructor from Shanghai, China comes to Los Angeles to search for a crime boss and female undercover cop Chen Pei Pei (Kelly Hu), with whom his department lost contact. Once there, his temporary mission is turned into an on-going exchange position, and he is partnered with a pair of cops. As they battle the criminal elements of the city, his skill in martial arts proves to be a big help.
