After the death of her grandmother, high school junior Lindsay Weir, up to now the perfect student, discovers existential rebellion, at least a bit. She wears her dad's old jacket, refuses to join the academic decathlon team, and starts hanging around the school freaks. She remains good hearted and stands up to some boys teasing a mentally-challenged student, but when that goes awry and she's caught cutting class with one of the freaks, she mopes. Meanwhile, her freshman brother Sam, one of several school geeks, is being picked on mercilessly by Alan. Can Sam convince his friends to face the bully with him? The homecoming dance brings some resolution.

When her parents go away for the weekend, Lindsay is in charge of her house, and Daniel convinces her to host a keg party. She likes him and can't say no. Sam fears the party-goers will trash the house, getting him in trouble, so he, Neal, and Bill substitute non-alcoholic beer for the freaks' keg. As the party unfolds, Sam removes all the glass objects, Neal seeks a way to be Lindsay's knight in shining armor, and Bill samples the real beer. Cindy shows up to dazzle Sam, Millie comes to keep her eye on Lindsay, and Kim throws a wrench in Lindsay's hopes with Daniel. When the revelers find money to get another keg, Lindsay knows she's sunk. Is big trouble inevitable?

Sam at first thinks he's too old to go trick or treating, then convinces Neal and Bill to dress up and go with him. Halloween itself is a nightmare: Lindsay's going out dampens Jean's spirit, kids and their parents reject her homemade cookies, the geeks draw stares for being too old and then are humiliated by bullies and worse, and Lindsay gets in the spirit of destructive tricks only to find herself guilty of going way too far. Is there any redemption?

Meanwhile, Karen Scarfolli, who hangs out with Kim and Daniel, bullies Sam unmercifully and gets him into trouble when he tries to remove graffiti she's put on his locker. Things come to a head at the Weir dinner table.

In the process, she rejoins the mathlete team and reveals her competitive side. Meanwhile, after a new hair style doesn't impress Cindy, Sam decides to dress more attractively, buying a powder blue disco jumpsuit. The attire gives him nothing but negative attention.

Attractions between the sexes. At a mall, Sam sees Neal's father with another woman. Bill says they have to tell Neal - no secrets. Neal's father claims innocence. Sam begins to doubt all adult relationships, including his parents'. The freaks plan a night at Laserdome. Kim objects because that's where Daniel made out with another girl after one of their quarrels. Lindsay and Nick are sorting out the aftermath of their breakup, with Daniel advising Nick and Kim advising Lindsay. Ken trades insults with Amy, a tuba player in the band, and finds he's attracted to her. Daniel advises him, too, and Lindsay is willing to be the intermediary for Laserdome night. What about Neal?

Ingesting. A new teacher draws Bill out: he admits to a peanut allergy, so Alan sneaks a few into Bill's sandwich to see if Bill's lying. Will he die? Bill's mother blames herself, Alan's father is furious, Sam and Neal find humor and romance beneath the tragedy. Meanwhile, Lindsay calls Nick out on his constant marijuana use, so he challenges her to get high. Experimentation, a babysitting job, and Millie's friendship teach a life lesson that Lindsay may or may not remember in the morning. And what about the weekend sci-fi convention?

Her parents hope it's a way to get attention to the family sporting goods store, Lindsay wants to ask something interesting, and Bush's aides have something else in mind.

Rosso punishes Daniel, who was about to break the law, by assigning him to the AV unit, where the geeks hang out; they resent the intrusion of someone cool, and Daniel is convinced he'll never do anything well. Sam wants to stop doing geek things, so he's crossing Dungeons and Dragons off his list. Where does friendship fit?
