Accident-prone Father Ted Crilly, along with stupid young Father Dougal and cantankerous, drunken retired priest Father Jack, lives on Craggy Island, being looked after by house-keeper Mrs Doyle. Ted hears a TV crew is coming to interview priests with remote parishes but does not want the others involved so pretends he is the island's sole priest, sending Dougal and Jack to the funfair. With the interview about to start Ted finds himself at the fair and whisked into the air on one of its rides, leaving Dougal, whom the interviewer assumes to be Ted, to spout a load of rubbish into the microphone.

To the priests' horror the boring, monosyllabic Father Stone comes to stay and innocently defies all attempts to get rid of him. In desperation Ted and Dougal head for the golf course during a thunder storm but are followed by Father Stone, who gets struck by lightning. Recovering in hospital Stone seems to have changed, becoming chatty and animated and hailing Ted as the hero who saved him. A guilty Ted declares that Stone can continue to stay, which he does - whilst reverting back to his original boring self.

Bombastic Bishop Len Brennan arrives unannounced and orders Ted and Dougal to picket the local cinema, which is showing 'The Passion of Saint Tibulus', a film declared obscene by the Pope and consequently banned globally except - due to a loophole - Craggy Island. Ted and Dougal dutifully begin their somewhat half-hearted protest but it only serves to whip up enormous publicity for the film with people from all over Europe turning up to see it. An outraged Bishop Brennan is about to send the priests off to very far-flung parishes as a punishment - until Jack discovers a highly incriminating video of him with his mistress.
Episode 4

Craggy Island is hosting the annual Priests' Stars in Their Eyes lookalike contest and the parochial house accommodates its adjudicator Henry Sellers. In an effort to curry favour for his entry, Ted plies Henry with drink, unaware that he is a recovering alcoholic, who consequently goes berserk and has to be chased through the woods and shot with a tranquilizer gun. Next day, with Henry assured that he did nothing untoward whilst drunk, the contest goes ahead with the Craggy Island trio's entry The Three Ages of Elvis winning. They decide to celebrate with a drink and unfortunately so does Henry.

Episode 5
25 mins
Father Ted struggles with a crush he has for a lady visitor, and the arrival of a group of nuns.

Episode 6
24 mins
Father Jack collapses after drinking too much floor polish and a visiting nun pronounces him dead. A solicitor arrives and tells Ted and Dougal that Jack had saved up half a million pounds, which they can split between them provided they hold a vigil by his coffin to ensure that he is not buried alive. The vigil duly goes ahead with the pair reminiscing on Jack's past but unfortunately for them the effects of the floor polish are only temporary and Jack turns out to be far from dead.
