The front-page hatchet job the rude reporter publishes offends Corday by the reporter's misinterpretation and Romano because it didn't trumpet him as implied. Greene and Corday spend their first night together.

Dr. Gabriel Lawrence wrongly suspects a teen's suicide attempt is the fallout from father-son strife and clashes again with Mark over bedside manner, notably illegally attempting to turn a victim's irate father away, but both scold ambitious resident Dave Malucci's insensitivity. Ramano nor Anspaugh are amused by Elisabeth's childish assumptions about power play, even at Benton's expense. Pediatrician Finch misdiagnoses a spoiled-rotten girl's behavior before an iron overdose has the staff battling to save the little girl although they are unsuccessful. Hathaway tries to help a pregnant woman get a job at the hospital.

Carter helps Lockhart with an elderly patient, while ignoring the warnings of Knight who becomes suspicious of her patient Paul Sobriki's deteriorating mental state, resulting in disastrous consequences for the both of them as he attacks them. Benton, Corday, Kovac and Hathaway are unable to save two parents, leaving both crash-unharmed children orphaned. Greene rebukes Chen and Malucci as they bicker over a patient in their care, failing to take account of his wishes, even though it's a doctor, yet ends up wisely overruling the latter himself.

Dr. Weaver ends the ER's noisy Valentine's Day celebration even before a blood trail makes her discover Carter and Lucy lying unconscious on the floor of Curtain Area 3, suffering from multiple stab wounds each, with Lucy worse off. The staff work valiantly to save their colleagues. Anspaugh and Benton repair the damage to Carter while in another operating room, Corday and Romano fail to save Lucy. Later, the psychotic patient Paul Sobriki, who attacked them arrives back in the ER after an accident -in the buff- but is unaware, as his wife Samantha must be told before the police takes him in custody. News of Lucy's demise spreads, but work must be resumed.

Kovac helps Hathaway buy a used car, exchanging happy memories and tells how his family was wiped a away by a bomb striking their home in Vukovar. Abby goes too far trying to arrange for a bone marrow transplant behind the young matching half-sister's mother's back. Back from suspension, Weaver braves Romano and mutually charms hospital nurse Braley's toddler son Edgar, who escaped and wanders around after a scary examination.

Hathaway flies to Seattle and reunites joyously with Ross.
