Episode 1

Begins at Home

Jo Waterson is struggling financially to bring up her little son Cody after his father Karl walked out on him and she is constantly bad-tempered. She crosses swords with Jimmi over prescription charges and then with Mrs Tembe,who is arranging a lavish ball to raise money for Eastern Europe,telling the receptionist that charity begins at home. As a result Mrs Tembe determines to help her. Chris meanwhile reacts angrily when Howard suggests he move to another surgery and he makes Emma promise she will stop seeing Howard.

Mrs Tembe visits Jo Waterson,who is initially hostile but ultimately grateful when the receptionist lends her money,refers her to the C.A. B. to learn her rights and encourages her to make Karl face up to his responsibility. The experience makes Mrs Tembe consider switching the object of her fund-raising from an overseas charity to the local food bank. Emma returns from giving evidence on the first day of Sam's inquest while Karen falls out with a pair of bird-watchers who have apparently sighted a golden-winged warbler in the surgery car park. She discovers that one of them has a medical problem and ultimately reconciles them after they argue.

Telling

Al's patient,terminally ill 'Macca' Mackintosh is being cared for by his old army buddy Ged but Ged is leaving and 'Macca' has an admission to make to him,namely that his affair with Ged's wife split the couple up. Encouraged by Al and the local priest Macca confesses,only to learn that Ged knew all along but has forgiven him. Emma and Chris are relieved that the coroner declares an open verdict on Sam whilst Howard instals CCTV to catch the surgery's toilet roll thief.

Motherly Love

Rob finds a baby abandoned in the snow and,in answer to an appeal, Slovakian Zelka,who speaks little English,comes to claim him. Then fifteen-year-old Jenna arrives at the surgery,saying the baby is hers. One of them is not what she seems and both have sad stories to relate but only one is telling the truth. Howard catches Al on CCTV stealing toilet rolls but the doctor justifies his action by saying that he needs them for his patients. Also caught on CCTV are Zara and Daniel having sex in the store-room but after Daniel has made efforts to retrieve the evidence he gets one over on Zara by refusing her further sex until he has more access to Joe.

One Got Away

Married for forty years business couple Shiva and Trishna Shandar see Kevin about Shiva's strained elbow but at the surgery it appears that Shiva is seeing a woman called Muriel and Kevin becomes an unwitting marriage counsellor before learning the identity of Muriel and helping save the marriage. Meanwhile Emma and Chris are united as they return to work and Gordon discovers that Mrs Tembe is not only his ideal woman but expert at mending cars and finding a new food store venue.

The Punch & Judy Man

Jas attends to Eli,baby son of Kate Sowerby,whose husband,Punch and Judy man Bill is divorcing her after she had an affair with his former assistant Dean. Bill believes Eli is Dean's son and wants nothing to do with him. However when Eli is rushed to hospital Bill relents and calls off the divorce. Daniel takes charge when Zara breaks her ankle though she refuses to let him back in the house to help her with Joe whilst Emma and Chris share a happy pilgrimage.

The Hider in the House

Kate Connam drags her bohemian mother Violet away from her filthy,dilapidated house and young lover to see Jimmi about her hacking cough. Violet scorns doctors,believing in ancient Chinese remedies and storms out of the surgery. Later a visit by Jimmi persuades her that she has been living in the past and must pay better attention to her health. Zara's customary rudeness antagonizes her new nanny,who quits,but she is reluctant to let Daniel help with Joe's care whilst Emma and Chris have never been closer,a fact which disturbs Howard.

All's Fair

Whilst visiting his friend Ron Carter in a home for retired soldiers Howard finds himself caught up in a war of attrition between Ron and new resident Alf,culminating in Ron throwing a grenade at the new-comer. Howard calls for a truce and discovers the source of the grievance goes back over thirty years when the two old soldiers were fighting together in Borneo. Zara reluctantly moves with Joe into Daniel's house and has to admit it was a good idea whilst Karen and Rob get the wrong end of the stick regarding the lack of sex between Gordon and Mrs Tembe.

Turn Back Time

Visiting his father's grave Chris meets Justin,Sam's old college room-mate,who tells him how his parents met. Emma was a sixth-former and Sam her parents' student lodger when they began dating and she fell pregnant with Chris. Emma nonetheless was able to train as a doctor but after Chris was born Sam told Justin he had deliberately sabotaged the condom so that Emma would fall pregnant and marry him,which is why,out of guilt,he condoned his wife's flirtations. Returning home Chris tells Emma she was right to say that Sam used him.

Truth and Reconcilliation

Jas attends the wake for her old tutor Dr McFalun,who killed himself after a long illness in which his sister Sinead nursed him. Sinead is angry when McFalun's estranged son Ciarran arrives with his black wife Adura and claims the marriage split the family. However Jas begins to see that whilst Sinead saw her brother as a saint he was a sexual predator,the real cause for the rift. At the surgery staff speculate on whether Zara and Daiel have a future after he starts dancing attendance on her. Jimmi is,predictably,cynical.

Hunger

Al's old student friend Cassie is an anorexic but refuses to accept the fact and needs to be tricked into his driving her to a clinic. Angry at this she causes his car to crash,hospitalizing her father. She takes advantage of the confusion to run off but eventually turns up at the hospital where her mother must employ tough love to get her to see sense. Gordon meanwhile asks Jimmi for help over sexual performance.

Young Love

Attending a local school to give a lecture on sexual health Mandy notices friction between teacher Nina Jethroe and class wide boy Josh Kinney. She learns that Nina started an affair with Josh before she realised that he was going to be her pupil and that if she ends the affair he will expose it to the headmistress. Mandy tries to help. Kevin,on his thirtieth birthday,is annoyed when people assume he is some years older and tries to do youthful things but ends up admitting there is no substitute for maturity.

The Lean

Chris goes to teach first aid at the youth club but ends up giving shy geek Marcus tips in how to win over the lovely Yasmin,who is an epileptic. Mrs Tembe goes to dinner with Gordon and ends up staying the night but,whilst initially they seem to be reconnecting,Zara confesses to Daniel that she finds it hard to trust him after his infidelity.

Friday's Feelings

Jas and Kevin attend to a DJ who has had an asthma attack and later play at being DJs themselves,unaware that they are on air and can be heard. Rob and Karen host a dinner party for Gordon and Mrs Tembe,who tells them about her first husband and how he died whilst Al meets a barmaid who shares his love of real ale. However he is surprised when she comes on to him and ends up bonding with her ex-boyfriend as they ponder the mysteries of womankind.

Person of Interest

Rob pulls in a suspected drug dealer,only to discover that he has arrested an undercover officer and possibly jeopardized an operation to arrest big time crook Eddie Fryer. To make matters worse the operation is headed by corrupt DCS Blake,Rob's old adversary. Fryer is arrested but,having claimed to have evidence to incriminate Blake,falls from a window to his death. Blake is about to blame Rob but Rob's superior DI O'Neil takes his side and forces Blake to back off. However she uses the situation to ensure Rob's future support for her.

Potato Head

Mandy lends support to Pearl Pike on the day her husband Ernest,an Alzheimer's sufferer,is transferred to a residential home. Mandy believes his young carer Brendan is too impersonal in his treatment of the old man and makes a breakthrough by playing him his favourite jazz recording,Potato Head Blues, much to Pearl's delight. Emma meanwhile is annoyed that Howard,believing he is helping,has decreased her work-load and Zara tells Daniel she feels she should leave the area again.

Refuge

When Justin Selkirk is brought into the police station after his wife Anya complains he went to hit her everybody assumes that he is the aggressor and she is the victim. However when Emma discovers that Anya is self-medicating and has been poisoning Justin with her tablets she has to make a mercy dash to protect the couple's baby Lilly. Meanwhile Jas and Kevin are persuaded to take a slot on the local student radio station,and Al turns out to still be captivated by Jas.

Talented Kid

When his composer father dies Sergei Abbott returns to Letherbridge and immediately falls out with his brother Michael,their father's carer,as Sergei's sole concern is how much money he has been left. On discovery that the sole beneficiary was the father's cleaner Clare,a talented musician,Sergei freaks out and collapses,which brings to light his drug-taking. Daniel intervenes to comfort Michael,also perturbed that he was left nothing. Meanwhile the opening of the food store is far more successful than Jas and Kevin's foray into radio broadcasting.

Light My Fire

Security guard Steve Fletcher dies in a fire at Andy Warren's factory. DI O'Neil and DC Dave Cartwright suspect arson,O'Neil being convinced that homeless teen-ager Mikey Temple,who has burns on his hands,is the culprit.Dave believes that Warren,whose business was failing,is responsible though in the event both are in for a surprise. Meanwhile a well-dressed stranger arrives at the surgery,looking for Mrs Tembe,whose surname he happens to share.

The Liars of Letherbridge

Mrs Tembe is shocked when Thomas,the husband she has not seen for ten years,approaches her for a divorce as he is marrying again but Karen and Gordon are more shocked as she had told them he was dead. Jas advises Gary Button,who,whilst irritated by flatmate Javier's guitar playing,passes it off as his own to impress fellow student Olwyn and takes drastic action when she asks him to play and Howard has to retract his suggestion that Jimmi take on the radio spot when he learns that Jimmi was kidnapped by two crazed fans after a previous broadcast

The Gift Next Door

Having taken in a parcel for his neighbour Sarah Al gives it up to a man claiming to be her husband,only to find that he was an impostor and Al himself is a police suspect. Meanwhile Zara admits to Karen that she is reluctant to leave Joe with Daniel after he shook his son and Mrs Tembe is reconciled with Gordon,having told him that she pretended Thomas was dead as he admitted to her that he was gay and at the time she had no idea how to deal with it.

Last of the Romantics

Mrs Tembe goes to see Thomas. She is angry that he married her knowing he was gay but he is equally annoyed that she left him,telling people he was dead.However they reconcile and wish each other good luck with their new partners. Mandy visits recently widowed aunt Rose,who is burning the belongings of her bullying husband. They find letters from Rose's first love Elijah and together they track him down. Emma is not happy that Dave is dating O'Neil.

The Grapevine

Aware that everybody knows that she is not a widow Mrs Tembe confesses all to Heston and Howard,indicating that ah she claimed to be on her application form she may be guilty of fraud but they disagree as she made no financial gain and she is grateful that everybody is so understanding. Whilst Kevin finds himself in line for Young Doctor of the Year,despite worries about a mystery assessment Jimmi is shocked when Fiona O'Neil tells him that Dave Cartwright raped her and,rather than be interviewed in the rape suite,she wants him to see her at her home.

Where the Truth Lies

Heston sees a young politics student,Tamir,who has a notebook containing details of a house he is staking out and which he believes to be a terrorist cell. The doctor believes the boy to be delusional due to stress but the investigation does bear a dramatic result. Rob is forced to arrest Dave after Sonia O'Neil claimed he raped her. Jimmi takes the allegation seriously but Emma believes Dave's story that it was consensual sex and the charge made by a woman scorned. Gordon meanwhile tells Mrs Tembe that he is unsure if they have a future after she lied to him.

A Most Unusual Item

Retiring salesman Tommy Sandison is concerned when Heston tells him his dialysis is an ongoing treatment and not a one-off as he fears it will limit his visits to his wife Muriel,who has Alzheimer's and lives in a nursing home. Karen agrees to drive him to hospital for his first treatment but he insists on stopping off on the way to make his peace with his estranged brother-in-law Clive. Meanwhile Howard grudgingly allows Chris to take over the radio slot whilst Emma and Jimmi continue to be at odds over the rape charge.

The Final Bell

Howard helps Frank Dooley,a traveller,who has the same regimental tattoo as himself but Frank,injured in a bare knuckle fight,is reluctant to go to hospital. Then Howard discovers that Frank is actually Charlie Hardwick,who deserted from the army twelve years earlier but,having heard his story,helps him to escape arrest by an unsympathetic commanding officer. Emma finds that Fiona O'Neil is hated at the police station but advises a young officer not to jump to conclusions whilst Zara and Daniel continue to fight over Joe's welfare.

Fox on the Run

On the run from a young offenders' unit Owen Mansfield is desperate for methadone and goes to see Kevin but flees when his friend Mickey steals a handbag to buy drugs for him. Owen's mother takes him back to the surgery and - after the boy has revealed the reason for his absconsion - the pair are reconciled. Emma's refusal to take sides over the rape allegation leads O'Neil to accuse her of championing Dave and threaten to expose their history while Daniel persuades Zara to see a counsellor with him.

Zara and Daniel visit counsellor David who gives them three sessions - two individually and the last one together. Whilst Zara finds it hard to believe that Daniel shook Joe because he was suffering from post-natal depression she accepts it as a possibility and concedes that Daniel may well have been depressed. Finally she accepts that she and Daniel must reconnect as people,rather than just as sex partners,and it is agreed they spend the next three weeks with no physical contact.

Chris's first radio broadcast does not go well when aggressive medical student Ben rings in to rubbish a diagnosis Chris has made to a caller and, despite Mandy phoning under an assumed name to offer praise, gets worse when Edie, a former alcoholic, arrives for her interview drunk. Fortunately Chris turns the tables on Ben by getting him into the studio for a confrontation and Howard is pleased with the result. Emma is shocked when she visits Dave,on suspension,for an encouraging chat and he throws himself at her, making her see that Fiona O'Neil could be telling the truth.

The Sucker List

On his day off Rob is surprised to get a letter to state that he is on a list of people who have been fraud victims. He discovers that an overly trusting neighbour is the real victim though he still manages to get conned himself. Emma apologizes to Fiona and they go to see Lynn Driver who tells them that it would be difficult for either to get a rape conviction against Dave but promises to ruin his career. Zara and Daniel,meanwhile,have a romantic lunch and have to remember that they are abstain from physical contact.

Sweet Sixteen

Forced to move in with her domineering mother Evelyn Jimmi's neighbour Gina Bowe finds it hard to keep the peace between her mother and her wayward daughter Juliet and eventually has a breakdown,regressing to her teen-age when she fell pregnant with Juliet. Jimmi helps her appreciate that she must take control of her life and stop the generations bickering. Zara has her plaster removed and,at a partners' dinner with Heston and Howard,she and Daniel announce that they are back together. Howard puts forward some ideas for the surgery but Zara and Daniel gang up on him to reject them,suggesting he undertakes a time-consuming staff survey instead.

Where R U?

Howard heartily embraces the idea of the survey - wherein staff grade each other - but only Emma supports him and he begins to doubt its worth. He also suggests that,as she has refused a full-time contract and paying a locum is expensive,she leaves the practice but relents when he sees how much it means to her. Karen meets Clare Huckerby,a teen-ager who thinks she is pregnant and who asks her to ring a man called Mick,who is twice her age. Karen assumes he is the baby's father but he is actually Clare's father,who walked out on his family years earlier. The meeting is inconclusive but Clare is cheered to learn that she is not pregnant after all and thanks Karen for her help.

Crash Barrier

Chris meets up with Jared,a boy he knew from the youth club and discovers that Jared and his mother Rosemary have been the victims of a local hate campaign for the past eight months since Jared accidentally ran over and killed his best friend. To Chris's surprise Rosemary feels that she deserves this because she feels guilty,having bought Jared his car but after Jared also has an accident Chris helps her to support her son and make amends with the dead boy's mother. Al goes to the patent office with his heart valve monitor and is staggered to learn that a South Korean firm has beaten him to it whilst Mandy suggests to Mrs Tembe that try a different church as she is too embarrassed to face Gordon after he dumped her for lying about her husband.

By the Pricking of My Thumbs

When patient Sarah Greene is attacked Emma is convinced the assailant is Sarah's ex-boyfriend,cocky,body-proud Stuart Foxall,who had earlier tried to hit on Emma herself. Stuart's foster brother provides an alibi but Emma is not convinced and forces a confrontation though she is surprised by the violence with which the real attacker expresses himself. Jas's suggestion that Al offers his services to the South Korean company does not bear fruit whilst Mrs Tembe is embarrassed that the church congregation know what happened between Gordon and herself even though they all want her to return.

Nowhere to Go

After visiting his mother's grave homeless Kyle Dreyer greets his brother Lee,who has been in a coma for five years following a failed robbery instigated by Kyle. Kyle is desperate to make things up to Lee but collapses in the street and Jas diagnoses pneumonia,recommending hospital admission. When the boy is reluctant to go Jas visits the hospital and finds things are not as they appear.Meanwhile Zara and Daniel still struggle with the sex ban whilst Howard is annoyed that none of the staff have a positive attitude to the survey.

Home Truth

Married Toby Waring has moved in with his mother Louise,who has Parkinson's Disease,although she has a carer Rick. Louise believes Toby should live his own life and asks Kevin to admit her to a home though Toby feels she should die at home in familiar surroundings. However Toby and Rick have a secret which,when revealed,solves everything. Al learns that his beloved aunt Sheila has died following an illness she kept from him and Jimmi feels he is over-reacting to the death.

Break in News

Hindered by an inept WPC Rob investigates a series of burglaries but is angered by local journalist Marie Tinker,who takes an unusual interest in the crimes. He discovers that it is no accident that the locksmith who conveniently attends each scene of crime is her brother. Howard tries to sell his cardio-vascular ultra-sound system to the other partners and,whilst Heston opposes it,Zara and Daniel surprisingly suggest that he furthers his idea in writing. Jas takes flowers to the bereaved Al but declines to go into the house.

Santa Ranter

Mandy 's patient Keith Rooney is suffering from stress induced by his annoying neighbour Derek Chatterton's insistence on keeping ostentatious Christmas decorations on his roof all year round - which is preventing Keith from selling his house. Keith's efforts to sabotage the inflatables lead to an accident though at least it enables Mandy to sit the two old men down and resolve the problem. Kevin accompanies Howard to the hospital to see an echo-cardiogram machine in action and is smitten by its operator,Hannah. He invites her to lunch with Jas and Al,who are irritated by her high-pitched laugh,though Kevin is blind to it and asks her out on a date. Zara and Daniel resort to playing chess to stay abstinent over the holiday weekend.

Cactus

Working as a hospital volunteer Mrs Tembe encounters Freda Dickenson, a vicious old woman who has driven away her son Terry and despises Sarah,his simple wife who tries to keep the peace between them. When Freda dies Sarah is shocked that Terry has no interest in organizing or attending her funeral until,backed by Mrs Tembe to whom he has confided his mother's hateful nature,Terry convinces Sarah that his mother always disliked her and tried to break up the marriage. Howard encounters unusual hostility from Heston over the echo machine whilst Kevin,after a lusty weekend with Hannah,is disappointed when Jas tells him she is moving out.

Older Then

Heston,still opposed to the echo-cardiac machine,meets Liam,the young medical student who is the recipient of his bursary and takes him out to lunch. Howard,seeing his chance,suggests to Liam that he take on paid work experience,assisting in the administration of the machine and when Liam accepts Heston sees that he is out-manoeuvred. Elsewhere Karen helps elderly Ludo Jameson to realize his dream of parachuting out of a plane although it means her also taking to the skies whilst Jas moves house,unaware that Al is checking out her new abode on Google Earth.

A Fair Exchange

At a fund raising event Howard meets Walter Foran,who runs a disabled charity. They go to Walter's house where Howard meets his much younger,Thai wife Mim. Howard believes Walter is exploiting her as a household slave but when he gets Mim on her own realizes that both partners are using each other. Mrs Tembe has a bad day when ten times more boxes of syringes than she ordered are accidentally delivered,blocking the reception area,but Chris comes to her rescue whilst Heston puts it to Liam that he take a summer job at the surgery.

Dangerous Liaison

With the three week sex ban at an end Zara and Daniel are anxious to make up for lost time but are thwarted first by Joe's crying and then by the window cleaner. At work Zara sees assertive school-girl Melissa Mordan,who wants a certificate confirming that she is a virgin as she is about to have sex with a rich stranger for £150,000. Melissa's mother finds out and comes to the surgery,making a scene and causing the other staff members to disapprove of Zara's decision. However at a hotel where she has gone with Daniel for uninterrupted sex Zara sees Melissa sexily-dressed in readiness for meeting her client and,regretting her earlier decision,talks her out of the deal.

Past Imperfect

Philip Lester has yet another job application refused,due to a decades old conviction for soliciting,which he has kept from his wife Jane. After he has attempted suicide Mandy discovers that he can have the conviction overturned and also persuades him to be honest with Jane,who is understanding. Howard learns that,facing a cash flow problem,the local hospital will be under-cutting the Mill for the use of the echo-machine and gives an impassioned speech to ensure the surgery gets the contract. Meanwhile Heston has a heart to heart with Mrs Tembe and proposes a platonic weekend in the country together.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Once an aspiring actor Tim Mannall relies on tips as a living statue version of Oz's Tin Man,a fact which depresses him,the more so when a flash university contemporary,now a wealthy high flyer,seems to be moving in on Dorothy,the object of Tim's affections. However things are resolved after Kevin advises him to go for it and win Dorothy over. Karen is sent home after bringing a flea infestation to the surgery. She blames Rob,who deals with scruffy tramps but he points out that she has been feeding a stray cat which is a more likely culprit. Liam's brain tumour turns out to be no more than a hang-over whilst Al steps up his campaign to 'accidentally' bump into Jas.

20 Million Miles to Letherbridge

Mrs Tembe and Heston go for their star-gazing weekend but get lost and are rescued by lonely farmer Melvyn Spennymoor, who treats them to a delicious if unusual meal and invites them to share a double bed, which they skilfully negotiate. Next morning they repay his hospitality by assisting him in advertising for a partner. Chris is visited by old friend Toby who disturbs him by insisting they camp out all night to await an alien invasion. Clearly Toby needs help but after knocking himself out he wakes up to face, not aliens but Heston and Mrs Tembe. Meanwhile Zara's attempt to get Jimmi talking to Daniel goes wrong.

That Feeling of Falling

Al wakes up to find Jas in bed with him after a drunken night out. As they walk to work they encounter homeless Edgar,who has fallen over and whilst Jas queries if he is epileptic Al writes him off as a drunk. When Edgar comes to the surgery with a bleeding nose Al takes an interest and learns that Edgar believes he was contaminated by poisonous chemicals at a factory where he worked. After interviewing the widow of another victim of poisoning Al embarks on a crusade to uncover a conspiracy of silence,ending up a hero and impressing Jas. Or does he?

Give and Take

Police doctor Emma is called to the station to examine popular officer Des Mason,known for his fund raising efforts and injured arresting young mugger Glen Harrow. Then Harrow,who has severe bruising,accuses Des of excessive force and considers prosecution,until the real facts are made known. Backed into a corner about a supposed girlfriend Al pretends he is dating somebody called Jackie whilst Karen and Rob,after seeing a website called Rock-Gazers,believe they are spending an evening star-gazing when in fact they have ended up in a dogging area.

Saptapadi

Jimmi is called out to see poorly Anita Achari on the day of her arranged marriage and discovers that she is pregnant - and not by the groom,Amit but by a work colleague with whom she had a fling. Anita asks Jimmi's advice but has her mind made up by the understanding attitudes of Amit and her father. After Mrs Tembe is upset after bumping into Gordon Heston asks her to become her house guest. Whilst in the park Jas meets forty-two year old Alan Harrill, a schizophrenic whose child-like actions are wearing down his sole carer,his mother Joclyn. Jas makes a breakthrough in persuading them that it will be in both of their best interests. Meanwhile Karen complains that Rob never wants to partake in any activities with her,which leads to a romantic gesture.

Due to a mix-up in deliveries Jimmi and Branwen Howell receive each other's shoes and meet in a restaurant to exchange them. Branwen is planning to trek through South America and Jimmi is enchanted by her free spirit. Zara and Daniel spend a day shopping for Joe's first pair of shoes and,after a fractious start,end up feeling like a real family whilst Howard is perturbed when Mrs Tembe announces that she is enrolling on a practice management course.

Maureen Oldgate is a tireless campaigner in her efforts to raise funds for Letherbridge hospice but Chris fears that she is putting her charity work above the needs of her son Darren,himself a cancer sufferer. When Darren has an accident whilst his partner Sue is out and his mother has failed to visit Maureen has to put things in a new perspective. Heston chides Liam for behaving irresponsibly by staging a political protest outside the surgery but has to back-track when Kevin finds an old photo of Heston himself in his student protest days. Rob takes Howard fishing and is equally annoyed by his non-stop talking and his beginner's luck in catching a fish.

Al witnesses a robbery in his local newsagents and recognizes one of the culprits as Jess Zumski,a young girl who cares for her invalid mother. However Al learns to his cost that Jess is not the innocent victim she claims to be. As Howard unveils his echo machine Liam tries to curry favour with Heston but things go awry,leading Kevin to suggest that rather than copy Heston he opts for a speciality. He chooses pharmacology. Liam meanwhile is introduced by his slacker house-mate Finn to Quack,an imported Chinese street drug which allegedly does wonders for the concentration and Liam,naively believing that it might be used as a medicine for good,suggests using his bursary money to subsidise testing it on Finn's customers.

Emma congratulates Howard on the success of the echo machine but Al has his hands full with students suffering from palpitations and breathing problems as a result of taking Quack. Liam however stupidly goes ahead with his questionnaire with those who have taken it. Mrs Tembe accuses Al of stealing her figurine of Jesus but discovers the culprit is elderly Mrs Cummings, a kleptomaniac who gets a buzz out of stealing. The two women sit down and agree to help each other.

Whilst student Edward Holmes buys more Quack from Liam in return for answering his questionnaire Kevin starts a poster campaign against the drug and Chris agrees to point out its dangers on his radio show. Unfortunately the immature new studio boss Ash is against it,feeling it would depress the listeners but Chris thwarts him by getting Mandy to ring in under an assumed name,asking for information on Quack. Later Mandy phones up to say that Edward has died. Finn is horrified and knows that the operation has to be closed down. Liam however cannot see sense and decides to experiment on himself with the drug.

Whilst visiting a patient at a women's refuge Daniel sees Sarah Langham,whose baby is teething. Outside he meets Dean,Sarah's boyfriend who has frequently been violent towards her but is now swearing contrition and promising to behave himself. Daniel is alarmed when Sarah appears to be going back to Dean but she has hatched a plan of her own to outwit him. Liam collapses in the surgery after taking Quack whilst Al changes the locks for Jas after she has reported a stalker. However when Jas returns home from work somebody is watching her on CCTV.

Whilst Liam lies in a coma Kevin visits his house and is told by Finn about the trials Liam has conducted on himself. Emma's terminally ill patient Andrew was once a famous explorer but he feels guilty that he neglected his son Tim for his travels. Now Tim and his son Edmund are about to move to Canada where Tim has a new job but Andrew is reluctant to tell them about his condition lest it stops them from going. Emma makes him change his mind to general satisfaction.

Councillor Erin Morgan is passionate about keeping open a local youth club, even though it is not cost effective. Her principal opponent Council leader Shaun Riddell has his brief-case stolen and blames Erin but she reports the thief, an old friend who thought he was acting in her interests. However the contents of the case expose Riddell as corrupt and Erin has an opportunity to push through her case. At the surgery Howard's patient feedback questionnaire causes resentment amongst the staff though Emma and Zara find common ground.

Rosie Finlayson is a single mother - a chronic alcoholic, occasionally and unconsciously violent to her children Kezia and Tom, both at school. In desperation Kezia ties Rosie to her bed but needs medical advice and has to bring Zara to the house to save her mother's life. Jimmi accidentally bumps into Douglas Beacon, a mobile home dweller, who has been attacked by kids, but Jimmi is aghast when Douglas accuses him of assault. However the doctor comes to realize that Douglas holds him responsible for his son's death and after the two men speak the charges are dropped.

Standing in for a sick friend Mandy takes an ante-natal group where other attendees are irritated by the well-informed but alarmist Philip Mallard, whose over-protective attitude to his pregnant wife borders on the obsessive. Mandy learns that this is because he feels guilty after his first wife miscarried but when another group member goes into labour, he rises to the occasion. Jas finds a love poem on her car windscreen, leading Zara and Daniel to wrongly identify Kevin as her secret admirer.

Recently-widowed Mrs Anstee has paid a grand to have a star named after her late husband and is not happy when Al explains to her that she has been conned. The two men meet and fight, forcing Nikki to make a choice. Jas learns that she was nominated as Doctor of the Year but disqualified as somebody was block-voting for her whilst Al persists with his account of his mythical girl-friend.

Meanwhile Zara and Emma argue over responsibility for a patient, Howard gets jealous when he sees Emma and Heston discussing their restaurant critics' job and Jas receives another anonymous love letter.

Afghani brothers Aasif and Babur are arrested as illegal immigrants in a border control raid but Babur escapes, getting knocked down by Chris's car. However the Reids learn that the brothers' status has changed and Babur has leave to stay, but has been exploited by his crooked gang-master Joe, who has kept him ignorant of the fact.

After a fall in the street Mrs Tembe is helped by Jenny, to whom she lends money and who - despite Karen's scepticism - returns it. The two women become friendly but Mrs Tembe declines to join Jenny's church. Following a road accident Kevin promises dying Mr Sloan he will find Hugo, whom he believes to be a dog but is actually a young boy brought up in isolation. Kevin takes him to the surgery but refuses to give him to his older brother George, a solicitor who led his own life and did nothing to rescue the boy from his near feral existence.

Jas goes on a blind date with Mandy's friend Vish but he is nervous and gets drunk, veering from lamenting the loss of his ex-girlfriend to getting overly amorous, leading Jas to conclude that he is not ready to start dating again. Heston and Emma embark upon their first venture into restaurant criticism and find everything so perfect that they are grateful to discover that they have been cheated whilst Howard's quiet night in takes an unexpected turn when he ends up giving career advice to a depressed pizza delivery boy.

Emma and Heston prepare to put the final, unflattering touches to their restaurant review, despite colleagues' opinions that they are being too harsh whilst the nurses nervously await the arrival of a practice officer to assess them. She is concerned that her gay son Martin's bruises are the result of S & M activity whereas he has actually taken up kick-boxing. Kevin, suspicious that Al is Jas's stalker, tells him that she is not interested and later in the day she gets a text calling her a slag.

Leora Parks, the callous practice development officer, arrives to assess the nurses and her brusque manner endears her to nobody except Howard. Howard, eventually seeing through the woman, defends his staff and sends her packing - though he still recommends the nurses go on a day training course. Zara encourages Jas to send a harsh reply to the texter who called her a slag.

Aggressive mature student Liz Sharples comes to the surgery, complaining that she cannot stop throwing up. Having dismissed pregnancy and alcohol as causes Heston discovers it is caused by her taking marijuana to keep her alert for her studies whilst the nurses attend a one-day course and are initially cynical but after their empathetic role play has impressed tutor Sandy find it rewarding. Kevin meanwhile is shocked when Jas tells him she has engaged with her abusive texter, revealing his suspicion that it is Al.

Rob is in a fishing tackle shop when his pocket is picked by young Frey Needham, who takes his wallet and warrant card. Rob traces him to the river bank where his father, serial criminal Casey, is trying to catch the legendary fish Big Steve - and uses a little blackmail to get his belongings back. Kevin sets a trap for Al by inviting him and his non-existent girlfriend Jackie out for drinks with the staff. Both Karen and Kevin are convinced that there is no such person as Jackie - but Al accepts on her behalf.

Mrs Tembe is concerned when unhappy teenager Kelly, whose mother has recently died, turns to false psychic Maggie. Emma and Zara compete to see which of them has prescribed the most antibiotics, only to find they have lost out to Daniel. As the staff await Jackie's arrival to their night out Al makes the excuse that he has to meet her and her sister at a club. Kevin follows with Jas, only to find he has gone alone to a strip club.

Mandy's school-friend policewoman Tanya Espinoza has been winning Tae-Kwon-Do titles thanks to steroids illegally supplied by Dexter Thomson but now he is threatening to expose the fact unless Tanya helps a criminal to escape. Mandy gives her the confidence to tell her husband and her superiors and face the consequences. Meanwhile Kevin, having told the rest of the staff of Al's lies, confronts him with the fact that Jackie does not exist but Al sidesteps him by saying that Jackie dumped him and he was too ashamed to admit it. Kevin is still convinced though that Al is Jas's stalker. Zara coerces Daniel into teaching Mrs Tembe to play golf whilst Chris is appalled when Emma and Heston write another scathing restaurant review.

A Slight Misunderstanding

Having found an engagement ring and a note 'Jas,Be Mine' in her desk Jas is shocked and Karen sends her home early, only for her to find Al sitting in his car outside, spying on her. She warns him that if he does not leave her alone she will make a formal complaint against him. Daniel is embarrassed when Mrs Tembe shows up for her golfing lesson but pleased for her when, to her amazement, she scores a hole in one whilst Kevin's plans to holiday in Mauritius slowly unravel as one of his friends has deep vein thrombosis and cannot fly and the other erroneously booked their flight to Mauritania, so they end up in Paris instead.

Haunted by his past failure to recognize a fatal heart condition in schoolboy Aaron Shimkus - which the boy seemed to predict - Daniel is determined not to make the same mistake with elderly Ira Goldbaum, a fatalist who believes in parallel universes. Emma and Heston write a scathing review of local restaurant the Icon, which gets them banned and, were it not for Howard's intervention, the rest of the staff also. Al apologizes to Jas and promises to leave her alone but after she finds her car has been keyed she reports him to Howard.

Release

Emma is called to the police station where Darren Peasgood, suspected of GBH, and several officers all have food poisoning. She traces the cause - food poisoning - to a local sandwich bar but in the process destroys Darren's alibi. After Howard calls a meeting to discuss Jas's harassment claim Heston speaks to Al, who promises to back off and it is decided not to involve the police. However Zara is not satisfied and gives Al an ultimatum, threatening him with dismissal if he oversteps the mark.

Mother's Choice

Single parent Renata Wicker brings her baby, who has chicken-pox, to see Chris, who prescribes paracetamol. After she has gone an officious policeman turns up with a social worker claiming that the baby needs more intensive treatment but Chris gets Emma and Al to back him up. Meanwhile Howard's directive on rules of conduct and his changing rotas so that Al and Jas do not meet intrigues the nurses though Jimmi, Al's confidant, refuses to tell Karen anything whilst Zara is disillusioned in her belief that Joe is a child prodigy.

Snobbery with Violence

Karen is visiting Cynthia next door when they surprise a young man who appears to be an intruder and whom Cynthia knocks out with a golf club. In fact it is her gay son's boyfriend but Karen helps her come to terms with the situation whilst his and Cynthia's shared interest in ceramics also plays a part. Jas accuses Al when her bracelet goes missing, only to find it had fallen behind her desk whilst Heston delivers a glowing restaurant review. Unfortunately his pride is punctured when the paper misprints the restaurant prices, his doctor informs him his cholesterol needs reducing and he gets hate mail for previous, sarcastic reviews.

Schoolboy Olly Whitehall is arrested for sending a picture of scantily-clad Amy, whom he fancies, to his friends on his phone but has a panic attack in the police station. He is seen by Jimmi, who discovers the boy likes Amy - and eventually reconciles with her - but did what he did to dispel rumours that he was gay. Jas meanwhile finds her car has been broken into and, when she returns home, somebody takes photos of her undressing on the secretly installed CCTV.

Karen's neighbour, single-parent Yvonne, makes out that she is doing well when in fact she has lost her job and has mountains of debt. After she has stolen the charity tin from the surgery and contemplated going back to prostitution Karen helps show her how to get out of her situation. Zara is landed with Kevin's patients, including elderly Mrs Lockley, who refuses to give up smoking and who keeps her from an important meeting. However the old lady brings out the doctor's softer side whilst Mrs Lockley has advice for Zara.

Under Observation

A group of rowdy students comes to the surgery, one of whom, Aidan Russell, gives Jas flowers and professes love for her. He is clearly on Quack and Jas suggests he be kept in for observation, though some personal remarks he makes cause her to wonder if he is the stalker. Mrs Tembe and Chris throw out the intruders and close the surgery but when Mrs Tembe confronts Russell he shows her indecent pictures of Jas, taken of her at home, which have been posted on the campus website. Jas is convinced that Al is responsible and asks Rob to charge him. Meanwhile Mrs Tembe decides to go back to her church and risk meeting Gordon.

Revelations

Al is taken in for questioning and is staggered to learn the extent of Jas's persecution, most of which he denies, claiming he was only looking out for her. Heston accompanies a very hung over mature student who says she is called Amy back to the halls of residence but finds she is really a cleaner drowning her sorrows over being her mother's carer whilst Mrs Tembe meets, and hits it off with, the new female vicar Viv.

Chris sees 15-year old gymnast Lise Landry after she has fallen from a vaulting horse but declares her fit. Lise is a determined girl but her mother Shammy tells Chris she also was a promising gymnast, who gave up when pregnant with her daughter and admits to living her dream through Lise, who she feels is not good enough to be a champion. Lise disagrees and Chris must reconcile them. Emma and Heston visit an Italian restaurant whose poor service has Emma chomping at the bit to write a hostile review though Heston, feeling sorry for the beleaguered owner, wants to be more fair-minded. Al works out that somebody has planted CCTV in Jas's house but she rebuffs him when he goes to warn her.

Guy Harney, shy son of Mandy's crusty patient Ron, meets women through a co-parenting Internet site as he is desperate to father a child but scares them off with his nervous gaucherie. Mandy puts him right in time for his meeting with the highly compatible Kendra. Zara tells Heston that the Italian restaurant he visited has Mafia connections, scaring him into writing a kindly review though he is shocked to discover that Emma has changed it back to the original, scathing account. Jas discovers and destroys the CCTV camera in her house, only to find a man who is not Al outside her house peering through binoculars.

Some months earlier than the previous episode Jas is seen going to an accommodation agency to rent her new house, dealing with boss John Barrell whilst incompetent employee Gus Harper looks on. He describes himself as a computer geek and is charged with ensuring that the house is up to scratch before Jas moves in. At the same time a man registering as Steve Grahams comes to the surgery and becomes Jas's patient. Outwardly charming he nonetheless entertains fantasies in which Jas is his girlfriend. Back in the present Jas finds herself a prisoner in a strange house.

The Look of Love

Jas's tormentor imagines her a chained prisoner but the reality is that she finds her house broken into and a photo of herself with Kevin vandalised. Rather than move, as Rob suggests, she goes to see Al, they make up their differences and he promises to help trace the stalker using the computer. Daniel is shocked to see that old friend Marcus has been encouraging his girlfriend Molly to have plastic surgery, not - as Molly believed - for her own enhancement, but to make her resemble his dead ex-partner Lucy. Fearing that the treatment will endanger Molly Daniel has to tell her the truth. Heston and Emma resign from their restaurant column fearing that the Mafia will punish them for their last review. However they discover that the restaurant was closed by the health department and there was no Mafia connection, just Zara winding then up.

Mrs Tembe and Viv reopen the food bank, where they meet asthmatic Sophie Mansfield. Sophie is part of an aspiring but struggling comedy duo with her friend Jenny, but Jenny has kept from Sophie her aristocratic background and private means. Dispirited by their lack of success Sophie quits and is angry to find out the truth about Jenny. Angry words are exchanged but Mrs Tembe encourages them to use these in the act and start again. Meanwhile Al alarms Jimmi by indulging in a spot of computer hacking, leading him to the conclusion that Steve Grahams is Jas's tormentor and stalker.

Nervous Ellie approaches Daniel in the hopes that he will stand in for an absent male model to help her domineering mother Queenie's ailing photographic business. He refuses but helps Ellie stand up to Queenie and persuade her that Ellie should be allowed to follow her own career. Meanwhile Al takes his findings to Rob, who learns that the real Steve Grahams is touring the Far East, as well as discovering a photo of Jas in Harper's empty house. Hearing that 'Steve Grahams' has an upcoming appointment with Jas Rob and Lynn Driver set a trap.

The Edge

The staff and police nervously await Jas's patient but he phones to cancel. Lynn Driver blames Howard, hiding in the bushes to prevent his escape, for scaring him off. However Al uses his computer skills to locate Harper's other address. Emma prescribes anxiety-prone Philip Morini beta-blockers but they give him a bad reaction during a job interview and land him in hospital. In fact she saw his jealous twin Paul, who was trying to sabotage his brother though the incident brings the pair together. Meanwhile Mrs Tembe suggests to Chris he launch a fund raiser to save his youth club from closing.

As the police withdraw from the surgery Karen takes a call from Stephen Grahams and books him in to see Jas. The stake-out is back on and Grahams is arrested but refuses to say anything when questioned. It is a remote detached house in the country but before he can enter it Al is rendered unconscious. Back at the surgery Mrs Tembe and the Reids plan a talent contest as the fund raiser for the youth club.

Steve Grahams' solicitor arrives at the police station, confirming his identity and explaining that he fled because he had smuggled drugs into the country. Meanwhile Al comes round tied to a chair in Harper's cellar, where his captor tells him about his plan to make Jas love him. Jas herself, believing her stalker to be in custody, arrives at the house in answer to a fake call from Al sent by Harper and is soon in Harper's clutches. She attacks him and frees Al but Harper comes after them whilst at the police station Lynn and Rob finally see Al's email and race to save the doctors.

Jas thanks Al for helping catch Harper and he decides against leaving the area whilst she moves back in with Kevin and Howard becomes a special constable.

A reluctant Howard agrees to accompany Gareth to the club, where a pregnant Jade crumples in pain and they take her to hospital.

Gareth spends the night by Jade's bedside. Next morning she tells him she has no idea of her baby's father and that she works for Afridi to pay off a financial debt. As she has an ectopic pregnancy Kevin visits but she is unwilling to return to hospital and goes off with Lester. Howard learns that Gareth has post traumatic stress disorder following the death of a comrade in Afghanistan. Gareth himself offers to pay Afridi the money but is laughed at and Jade also asks him to back off so he takes matters into his own hands and robs Afridi's club at gunpoint.

After the robbery Gareth takes Jade to his house, where Howard also turns up and persuades Gareth to let him return the money to the club. Afridi's thugs beat Howard up but release him. Meanwhile Jade starts bleeding and Gareth takes her hospital, where she loses the baby but Afridi locates them and abducts Gareth, taking him back to the club to torture him. However, Howard calls the police, who arrive and arrest Afridi. Gareth returns to the hospital with Howard, accepting that he needs treatment and reconciling with Jade.

Crippled in a car accident which killed another woman, Alana Foston looks forward nervously to the inquest and appears to have a guilty secret her husband Terry does not want out in the open. Eventually Mandy discovers why - the couple planned the crash to claim on the insurance. Meanwhile Zara takes Joe to casualty after she suspects that he swallowed a coin and is horrified when Dr Desai notices bruises on the baby and calls Social Services. Chris and Kevin join Howard on his fitness course and, whilst they are sceptical of the bullying instructor, they come through with flying colours - unlike Howard.

Mrs Tembe persuades her to tell David the truth. Zara loses it when Fleur comes to the surgery to ask colleagues about the Grangers' parenting skills and, whilst some of the staff prepare for the talent contest Emma tells Mandy how a childhood incident put her off public performances for life.

Alcoholic Meg comes to the surgery to ask Jimmi for help with a passport, declaring that she must go to South Africa following a phone call from the daughter she has not seen for twenty-five years. Her husband insists the call is one of her drunken delusions but a visit from a young girl who resembles the daughter makes for a happy ending. Zara takes Daniel's advice and is civil to Fleur as the couple give frank accounts of their relationship with Joe and each other. However they are all horrified to see a new and unaccountable bruise on the toddler's arm.

Emma calls in Rob when single mother Tia's baby Chloe dies in suspicious circumstances. Tia denies harming her child but is exonerated after her boyfriend Andy comes into the picture. Howard, taking his Red Man test with a view to his special constable duties, attempts to impress the instructress Philomena but loses out to his rival Spencer whilst Daniel suggests that he moves out of the house, allowing Zara to keep Joe. She is adamant that this will make it look as if he is guilty and insists that he stay.

Meanwhile Karen Emma and Mandy fall out over their Supremes tribute act for the talent contest.

Young student Mike Campbell asks Kevin to test him for an SDI but omits to mention that his bruising is caused by rough, if reluctant, drunken sex with the predatory Jenna, behind girlfriend Sophie's back. Howard starts his first day as a special constable, making up with Spencer whilst Zara and Daniel convince Dr Westerby that Joe has Morphea and is not at risk. Inevitably Zara has harsh words for Fleur.

When Mrs Tembe criticizes her singing Emma walks out but, after a depressed Chris has suggested cancelling the event, Emma persuades him that the show must go on. The revamped Supremes are a huge hit and the evening raises a thousand pounds for the youth club.

Later he is charged with guarding the suspect at the hospital but unfortunately he lets him escape whilst he is giving a caution to a young woman he has seen shop-lifting from a florist.

Whilst graphic artist and mother of three young children Chloe is keen to return her work her husband George packs his job in. Fearing that Chloe may fall pregnant again George asks Daniel for a vasectomy but Chloe has not dismissed the idea of another baby and Daniel must help them reconcile their differences. Howard makes Emma and Al go to a student fair in silly costumes to sign up freshers as surgery patients but they do very badly until Al offers a pub crawl as an incentive. Howard is not impressed and insist they return next day without gimmicks.

Emma and Al return to the student fair to canvass for patients, Emma getting five hundred signatories with her Embarrassing Bodies idea, offering students cautionary advice on sexual diseases. Meanwhile student Suki, diagnosed with a terminal illness, asks her best friend David for sex as part of her bucket list. Seeing her only as a good friend David is confused but after speaking to Jimmi knows what he has to do.

Samantha Kirby returns to Letherbridge to live in a long boarded up house where, twenty years earlier, two girls were murdered. Howard meanwhile is troubled to learn that a new poly-clinic may be opening next to the surgery whilst Mandy befriends Lewis, a teenager scared of his estate's gang culture.

With thoughts of the proposed poly-clinic preying on his mind Howard insists on a cleaning operation at the surgery. This involves throwing out steaks bought by Karen which are dripping blood in the fridge. A policeman arrives to take them but, to Howard's annoyance, they splash blood on the carpet - which he ends up cleaning. Meanwhile Emma is concerned about Chris, who seems distant and troubled about something which he will not discuss.

Mrs Tembe helps Chris organize a fund-raising jumble sale and he admits to her that he feels cursed but cannot explain to her how he helped Sam end his life.

Unfortunately Brad is also an irresponsible party animal who drags the two doctors along on a pub crawl and gets them drunk, Kevin having an unfortunate encounter with amorous patient Ellie. Meanwhile Rob is puzzled by John Knowles, who owns to several sex crimes, though it transpires that the culprit was his late father and John feels guilty for not stopping him.

Next morning Heston wakes up in bed with female delegate Robyn whilst Kevin discovers he has had his ear pierced. Both are hung over with no recall of the night before and Brad is nowhere to be found. A visit to the bar brings Kevin in contact with amorous patient Ellie's violent boyfriend but the doctors are rescued by Rob conducting a drugs raid. Time is running out for the conference to start so Zara fills the breach until, after Kevin learns that he saved Ellie's life, Brad is discovered in an extremely compromising position and the lecture goes ahead.

Emma is puzzled that student Carol Butcher has had a surfeit of doctor's notes, leading her feminist tutor Amy Carslaw to believe that she is shamming. Amy suspects that Carol is moon-lighting as a stripper, which is why she is behind with her course work but Emma uncovers the truth, leading to a meeting with Carol's girlfriend Bree. Mandy is perturbed that morbidly obese teen-ager Jess Harding is being fed unhealthy foods by her loving mother, as compensation since the pair believe Social Services want to take Jess into care whilst Chris, believing he deserves to be punished, is seen by Heston for suspected testicular cancer.

After being taken to task by Howard for over-involvement with the Hardings, Mandy asks Kevin to visit. Al is visiting Colin Mansen, agoraphobic after a road accident, and is unhappy that Colin spends his days spying on Norma across the road, whom he believes has either killed or imprisoned her husband. A reluctant Al agrees to investigate but ultimately the situation is not only resolved but Colin's condition cured as he leaves his house to help Al.

Zara then confronts Vanessa, telling her her stupidity could cause Jess's death. Back at the surgery Zara and Mrs Tembe have trouble persuading their colleagues to take part in the Jane Austen marathon.

Zara and Mandy attend the hearing to decide Jess's future, where it is apparent that Vanessa's failure to implement social services' proposals could lead to the girl's early death and, whilst Mandy asks that the Hardings are given one last chance, Zara's testimony leads to Jess being taken into care.

Lizzie, a strange young woman with a Jane Austen obsession, is an elective mute following a mugging who communicates via writing on a tablet. Whilst waiting at the surgery to see Jas she sees the staff going through their daily motions but argues with Jas, who accuses her of not trying to regain her speech. Lizzie faints and imagines herself as the heroine of 'Pride and Prejudice' with Karen as her mother, Jimmi as vicar Collins, Mandy as sister Lydia, Zara as Miss Bingley, Mrs Tembe Lady De Burgh and Daniel as a handsome, saturnine Darcy. Figures from other Austen books, 'Emma' and 'Northanger Abbey' also intrude, with Emma Reid a splendid Miss Bates. However Jas is unable to wake Lizzie from her trance.

Still in her coma Lizzie imagines that she is turning down a marriage proposal from Jimmi's Mr Collins, thus annoying Karen in the role of her mother. She is appalled, however, to find that, rather than marry her Lizzie, as in the book 'Pride and Prejudice', this Darcy gets engaged to Caroline Bingley. She is confused and hysterical but it brings her out of her trance with the power of speech regained. Jas gets her to admit that she prefers the fantasy world of romantic novels to real life, but Lizzie agrees to see a psychologist. Nonetheless, as she leaves the surgery, she visualizes another romantic meeting.

Beauty salon owner Gloria Newton brings her asthmatic daughter Sigourney to the surgery. Gloria has her sights set on wealthy marriages to doctors and invites Heston for free treatment at her salon whilst encouraging Sigourney to ensnare Kevin. However Sigourney finds him arrogant and resists. Chris's old school-friend Charlotte returns from London with news of her engagement to Piers, another contemporary whom Chris despises. It is apparent that Piers only wants her as a trophy wife whilst she is happy to marry solely for money, which perturbs Emma and Chris, especially as Charlotte has meaningless sex with Chris. Meanwhile Al finds himself actually taking an interest in Jane Austen.

Jimmi sees Catriona, a weird young girl obsessed with the idea that a murder took place in the bungalow into which she and her mother have just moved and who imagines seeing a blood-stained man pursuing her. After she collapses and is taken to hospital it transpires that this is a symptom of epilepsy. The other staff attend the Jane Austen exhibition where Gloria continues to pursue Heston and the animosity increases between Kevin and Sigourney, who flirts with security guard Barry, though this backfires on her when Barry gets drunk and declares his love for her. Meanwhile Chris is relieved to learn that he does not have testicular cancer but Emma is dismayed that he kept his fears from her.

Gemma, a stroppy teenager lives with her drunken father and has hopes of becoming a dancer. She also tries to dominate her friend Hayley, pushing her towards a date with local spark Frankie. Gloria is delighted when a domestic accident brings her in contact with Heston again whilst Jimmi pays the price, literally, for trying to cheat in the Austen book reading charity quiz.

Returning to England after six years in Australia Stuart Eansworth comes to the surgery to register and is amazed to meet ex-boyfriend Elliot, whom he believed to have died of cancer . At a celebration given by Elliot's mother Miriam Karen bets Al that the lads will get back together again and, when it transpires that the over-protective Miriam had deliberately kept the pair apart following her son's recovery, Karen wins her bet and gets her happy ending. Heston tells Gloria that, as she is a patient, they cannot date each other and, whilst Barry does himself no favours with Sigourney by telling her that Kevin was once accused of murder, it still sours Kevin's attempt to be reconciliatory to her.

Ultimately Germaine confesses that this is true and agrees to go in for drying out.

When syringes and prescription pads disappear Mrs Tembe suspects young computer engineer David Walker when she finds he is taking medicinal cannabis for his arthritis, though the real culprits turn out to be his parents, who have their own secrets. Heston becomes irritated by Gloria's non-stop talking, especially her account of his sexual prowess, whilst Kevin feels inadequate that he was unable to do the deed with Sigourney due to his impotency. At the meeting to block the building of the poly-clinic Howard appears defeatist but Al saves the day with his discovery that the proposed site is the home of an endangered species of newt.

Ann Smithson has lied to her husband James about her infertility as she fears he will leave her for a woman who can bear children so Mandy forces a discussion to clear the air. Al is called out when philandering husband Len Parkins dies in the bed of his mistress Rose Williams. On their way to a Halloween costume party Al, Heston and Jimmi meet an enigmatic small boy who demands each tells him a scary story. Heston rubbishes these offerings and tells of a sinister night club where Mandy fails to save Chris from a curse. The boy likes this story but his approval comes at a cost...

Jas and Jimmi on the other hand get close over a TV dinner and plan a date to a local concert.

Emma is shadowed for a day by trainee police doctor Sarah Kennett, who becomes overly involved with the patients but impresses with her sympathetic treatment of a self-harmer whilst Karen, after a boozy night out, falls and Rob accidentally reverses into her though she appears to have no serious injury.

Asked to be the ringside doctor at a charity martial arts bout Daniel is concerned that local boy Russ has health issues he has been keeping secret and will be beaten if he enters the ring for what is obviously a grudge match. Zara meanwhile tries to get Karen to accept that she is no longer a teen-ager in 1984 but tells Rob and his son Jack that recovery may take a while whilst Jas and Jimmi's date goes very well, leading to a passionate clinch.

Back at the surgery Jas gets a text from Kevin on his holiday to say that his potency has returned. With Karen due for discharge from hospital Heston suggests to a glum Rob that she moves in with Mrs Tembe and that Rob keeps away from her.

Jimmi is visiting Sophie and Dennis Carlsson , parents of Yasmin, a baby who needs a transplant. Meanwhile Heston's audition for a local pantomime comes to nothing when he accuses the writer/director of being smutty and puerile and Karen proves a difficult guest for Mrs Tembe, acting like a spoilt teenager.

Jas becomes obsessive in trying to contact Aran whilst Karen, prompted by Jimmi with a remark about how decent Rob is, be starts to look at her husband's files, giving Mrs Tembe and Jimmi some hopes for recovery.

The two women help him locate 'Little' and discover the real identity of the dragon. The rioters are dispersed but Rob is injured in the fracas.

Jimmi attends an OCD self help group and is impressed by the remarks of fellow sufferer Hermione whilst Howard's plan to use dirty tricks to ensure maximum surgery efficiency backfires on him.

Looking at old photographs Rob is reminded of events from exactly ten years ago when he arrested Sian Peters for shop-lifting but let her go on learning that the previous day she had buried her two year old. Sian's husband Tony is a violent sadist who blames Sian for the death and is physically cruel to her. Rob and Karen let her and her son Louis stay with them whilst Peters is arrested and imprisoned. To Rob there is an irony in that he worked as a team with a wife who no longer acknowledges him.

Sian Peters is upset when Kevin finds her physically fit for work, claiming that she is agoraphobic and suffering from anxiety caused by past domestic abuse. Zara, alone in the surgery, is taken hostage by badly injured Paul Stephens, who is wanted by the police after stabbing his ex-girlfriend's new man and, after patching him up, she persuades him to give himself up whilst Jimmi and Hermione continue their relationship.

When Sid collapses under the strain Jonesy persuades her that Mary is right. Valerie gets roped in by elderly Renee to help her infiltrate the pharmaceuticals firm where Renee's son Keith works and who are preventing him from seeing his mother. Rob receives his bravery award for disarming Peters with some cynicism. Howard detects that Rob acted recklessly as he was in despair over Karen but nobody else will believe him. Rob goes to see Sian and this time does not pull away when she goes to kiss him whilst Daniel has to persuade Zara that they cannot afford a private education for Joe.

Jimmi's young patient Silas Marshall is appalled that his school-friend Mojo is working as a debt collector for loan shark Ray Palmer, to whom Silas's father is in debt for trying to raise money during his son's illness. Hermione tells Jimmi she loves him whilst Sian, aware that she has no future with Rob, tells Karen what a good man he is and she should stay with him. Karen is annoyed that Al's article about her is in the local paper and she thanks Rob for advising her against taking part in the article, giving him some hope for them.

Zara is, to her amazement, highly impressed when she and Daniel visit Heathdean school to enrol Joe. Max is a driven student, desperate to gain a bursary to a Californian university but when he collapses concerned friend Ella takes him to see Zara. A very busy Heston is due to give a speech on modern technology but has totally forgotten and is left with nothing to say. However Valerie accidentally comes to his aid whilst Mrs Tembe wages her own war on technology.

Ex-social worker Paul Chandley is being terrorized by a group of thugs led by Calvin Falola but will not call the police. In fact Falola was the victim of the older man's sex abuse when he was his social worker, blames him for his own worthless life and wants to drive him to suicide. Daniel discovers that both are guilty in their own way. Cowardly Al tries to extract one of his own, aching, teeth rather than see a dentist and Mrs Tembe feels used when Zara's good deed has an ulterior motive - to help get Joe into school by learning more about the church.

Arrogant lawyer Luke Cotterall reports his laptop as stolen and is extremely patronizing to Rob when he calls. In fact the laptop belongs to Sophie who finds out anyway and acts accordingly. Zara drags Daniel along to church but he is the one who convinces Reverend Viv with his sincerity. Mrs Tembe however is less impressed.

Kevin is visited by Lucy and Evan Vincent, a couple who have been separated for some months and is appalled when the embittered Evan demands Lucy return the kidney he donated to her. Elsewhere Al finally sees a dentist - though he rejects his suggestions of healthy living - and Valerie determines that she will taken on permanently.

Meanwhile Fliss admits to Al that she is pregnant but wants it kept from her parents, asking him to accompany her to the abortion clinic. Karen is angry when her therapist reminds her of her duty to her family whilst Fliss has her abortion and is taken home by Al. Meanwhile Karen agrees with Valerie that she should be doing something more creative with her life.

Emma is called to the police station after Tara Morris and Angela Leigh are brought in for fighting on Angela's hen night. Eventually the two girls recall events. Angela discovered she had a substantial lottery sum so she rang the groom, Tara's brother, to call off the wedding, whereupon Tara hit her. At this point the women's friendship ends. Jimmi confronts Hermione over the kiss but her erratic reaction leads him to believe they have no future together whilst Zara and Daniel take Joe to church for his christening. However they realize that they are there for the wrong reasons and halt proceedings.

Howard visits an old army friend John, now paralyzed from the neck down and desperate to die. Al arrives as does John's solicitor Dave Wallace to turn off his ventilator, John having legally signed his permission . Howard is shocked and John's wife Fiona distraught but ultimately they see what must be done for the best. Meanwhile Kevin encourages Mandy to get back onto the dating scene and Karen is touched when Rob comes to support her for her work reassessment .

Al joins the stag party for old college friend Russell but a drunken fight erupts between the groom and Buck, an old flame of the bride, who wanders off and falls into a ditch, impaling his leg. It is up to Al, himself the worse for drink, to save his life. Meanwhile Heston's postman Neil tells him that he has found a body but when the police arrive there is nothing there. It turns out that this is four year old memory suddenly triggered - and possibly even a confession.

Emma sees down-to-earth nun Sister Catharine, who fears she may be pregnant after being raped by a man she knows. The test proves negative but she is still reluctant to tell the police, fearing scorn and negative publicity. However, after Emma has introduced her to another rape victim, she agrees to do the right thing. Meanwhile Chris cheers up Al and Jimmi with a night at the pub and Mandy is shocked to see a woman who looks just like Freya.

Zara visits elderly Miss Heppel, who wants her to reverse the bedroom mirror so that her soul will not be trapped when she dies but Zara fails to do so. Subsequently she is haunted by the dead woman's ghost - until she shows a single mother and her sickly son kindness. After the ghost has gone she turns the mirror over. Mrs Tembe meanwhile is preparing a presentation speech which Heston suggests she liven up though her attempts at joke-telling and conjuring fall flat. A rap with Chris does go down well though whilst Mandy is visited by Freya's sister Lois, who bears a striking resemblance to her dead sibling.

Karen moves into Emma's house. She is visited by Imogen, whom she reluctantly lets in though they start to talk and end up going shopping together. Back home Imogen confesses to boyfriend trouble. Karen appears not to care but when Imogen's back is turned sorts it out for her. They part as friends with Karen declining to kiss her daughter goodbye but after she has gone Karen starts to cry.

Kevin sees Michael Cave, an elderly former actor who is recently bereaved. Although he appears cogent and articulate he admits to bouts of memory loss and Kevin sends him for tests. Meanwhile Rob, encouraged by Imogen, takes the bull by the horns and asks Karen for a date whilst Mandy delights in the presence of Lois as her house guest, possibly because she reminds her of Freya.

Karen and Rob go to dinner at a smart restaurant but the fact that she now hates what was once her choicest food and the presence of a noisily-quarrelling couple at the next table make the date less than ideal. However they part on very good terms and even have a good-night kiss. Meanwhile Kevin is shocked to find that Lois is the exact double of her dead sister and Jimmi goes for dinner with a married couple he knew at college. Unfortunately they both come on to him as well as asking him for money and wanting him to smoke dope with them, so the evening ends early.

Special constable Howard gets involved when nervous Helen Morris insists that the man she has seen outside her house is Toby, the husband she is certain is dead. Now calling himself Gabe Toby admits that he and Helen are divorced but he knows her to be unstable and has come to check that she is all right. Karen agrees to go fishing with Rob whilst Mandy, advised by Kevin to get rid of Lois, ends up kissing her instead.

Chris's friend Paul Lucas, a young single father , finds his world turned upside down when Alex, mother of their little girl Maria, suddenly reappears after deserting them for a career in archaeology. She wants reconciliation but, as she left them once, Chris and Paul's older, platonic friend Liz urge caution though fortunately he makes the right decision. Mandy's relationship with Lois intensifies, despite warnings from Kevin, and, after a shaky start, Karen and Rob's fishing trip turns into a pleasant day out.

Homeless Tommy Majors stumbles back into the lives of wife Natalie and teen-aged daughter Davina whom he deserted seven years earlier. He is clearly unwell but refuses Heston's help and tells Davina that he has come back to keep an eye on her as she is heading for bad company. She is sufficiently impressed as to persuade Natalie to give him another chance. Lois meanwhile seems to be striving to become more like Freya whilst Chris gets beaten up by thugs following an argument in a pub.

Rosie

Debbie and Ray Kenly, unable to have children of their own, are fostering little Rosie with a view to adoption when Zara discovers that due to her mother's drug addiction, Rosie is HIV positive. Debbie immediately wants out but changes her mind after Zara advises her that Rosie needs her. Chris refuses to go to the police with his injuries whilst Karen believes some of her memory is coming back. After embarrassing Mandy at the surgery Lois packs her bags but Mandy persuades her to stay.

In church Mrs Tembe meets elderly Frank, who is there to meet up with and elope with his old flame Cat, though both are now married to other partners. When Cat's interfering daughter Becky finds out she confronts Frank, who tells her that he is her natural father. She jealously tells her mother to choose between herself and Frank but when Cat does so Frank encourages a more realistic approach. Elsewhere Karen and Rob's noisy passion gets them thrown out of the cinema and Chris, unlike the disapproving Kevin, tells Mandy to go for it with Lois.

Al is perturbed when student Lena, who is afraid of heights, decides to join a charity abseil to impress Johan, a boy she fancies. He tries to dissuade her but when her friend Zoe tries to muscle in with Johan she goes for it - and gets a result. Emma and Chris commemorate the anniversary of Sam's death in their own ways whilst Karen and Rob fall out when they go to a restaurant she is certain she has visited before and he accuses her of going there with another man since he has no recollection of the place.

Helen Hartley, of the patients' Participation Group, asks Howard to dissuade her son Ryan from playing the bagpipes but Ryan believes it has caused him to lose weight, winning him girlfriend Ally. Elsewhere Karen remembers that it was Jimmi who took her to the restaurant and Chris, having been beaten up again and mugged this time, decides to take up boxing.

Zara sees Jude Robertson, who is obsessed with the idea that she has cancer. Zara is dismissive until Jude claims that the disease claimed her mother. Mandy's pleasant day with Lois ends on a sour note when Lois swaps a photo of Mandy with Freya for one of Mandy with herself whilst Emma and Karen have a heart to heart in which Karen admits to having feelings for Rob.

Chris turns down Al and Jimmi's offer to go drinking with them and heads for a rough pub where he deliberately tries to pick a fight with another young man, Adam. When Adam refuses to be drawn Chris goes home but lets fly in his own room. Mandy tells Lois she can no longer put up with her clinging nature and asks her to go, ringing Kevin in case of trouble. Lois goes mad, lighting a barbecue and dousing herself and Mandy in lighter fuel though fortunately Kevin arrives in time to save Mandy.

Asked by Rob to see Harry, an injured clown, Emma has a bad reaction since a childhood traumatic incident has left her with a phobia of clowns. However her fears are allayed after a conversation with Harry though it is maybe as well that she was unaware of his crime. Middle-aged shopping channel presenter Matt Jackson fears the loss of his youthful looks will get him the sack and asks Kevin for advice on plastic surgery. When Kevin hesitates he has Botox, with dire results, and ultimately realizes that he will be healthier and happier if he packs in the job and stops worrying.

An incompetent sales rep takes Heston hostage, blaming his restaurant review for the demise of his father's business. When the father appears Heston negotiates with them to let him go, promising to help them start again. At the surgery there are concerns for Mandy, who is staying at home and not answering her phone. However Al takes it upon himself to visit and offer his own brand of therapy, persuading her to return to work.

G.P. Brian Searl, a fellow parishioner of Mrs Tembe, asks their friend Jessica to marry him but she refuses. After he has left her younger, secret lover Darren arrives but he is an escaped convict who wants her to go on the run with him, and he is injured. Brian treats him and promises to keep quiet but Mrs Tembe finds out and encourages Jessica to do the right thing. With his mother away for the weekend Chris takes part in a bare-knuckle fight which leaves him unconscious whilst Rob tells Karen he has turned down a CID post in Leamington Spa.

Rob's possessive auntie Ag comes to stay and they have lunch with Karen, who suddenly remembers that the two women hate each other. Ag counters by mentioning that Rob gave Karen a ring to atone for 'a spot of trouble' but leaves without explaining further. At the campus surgery Howard determines to get rid of graffiti before the vice-chancellor's visit whilst Daniel, returning from a conference in Greece, gives Zara an eternity bracelet.

Al's patient John is a pianist who claims he has arthritis so Al brings in blind piano tuner Terry to help him. In fact it is a ploy on Al's part to get both men to regain their confidence about public performance as well as reuniting Terry with pub landlady Shawna. Elsewhere Chris tells Emma his bruises are caused by a fall from his bike and Karen is shocked when she learns what Auntie Ag's 'spot of trouble' was. She fell pregnant in her forties and Rob persuaded her to have an abortion. She is not happy with him.

Meanwhile the graffiti artist returns to the campus surgery and Rob tells Karen he is taking the job inn Leamington Spa.

Meeting charismatic old school-friend Gene Murray, who tells him he is an international salesman, Kevin is envious. Meanwhile Emma and Mandy have a heart-to-heart which makes them feel better about their deceased partners whilst Karen, having announced her split from Rob, accidentally stumbles on Chris's campaign of self-punishment when she steps in to prevent a fight he has instigated with a motorist.

Having been flashed at in a park by Alex Gleeson Mandy is amazed to see him at the surgery with tolerant girlfriend Jenna, who knows what he does but asks Mandy for help. Meanwhile Zara advises Karen not to get involved with Chris but persuades her that she needs Rob and a visit to the police station where she sees him talking to Lynn driver arouses her jealousy. Al tells Howard that the graffiti is by a hot new artist and could benefit the surgery financially but Barry erases it before Howard can tell him.

Alzheimer's sufferer Delia Barclay prepares to go into a retirement home, much cheered by the encouragement of Charlotte, her daughter-in-law who has recently split from Delia's son Anthony. Charlotte is diagnosed with an aneurysm and Daniel suggests surgery but Charlotte refuses as she is reluctant to do anything that would cause Delia more stress. However when kidney failure is also discovered Daniel persuades her that she must tell the family to gain their support. Meanwhile Karen starts to patch things up with Rob whilst Jimmi is alarmed by Chris's vicious nature.
