As strange meteorites are crashing down, an unconscious Doctor is found lying just outside the TARDIS. The United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT) commanded by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart is already onto the issue of the meteorites and when he learns that a man has been found unconscious in the woods lying next to blue police box, he's certain that his old friend the Doctor has returned. He visits him at the nearby hospital but doesn't recognize him, not realizing that he Doctor has regenerated. The Doctor foils an attempt to kidnap him and he's soon back in hospital having been shot by the soldiers guarding the TARDIS.

The Doctor is in a coma in the hospital having been shot by the soldiers guarding the TARDIS. The attending physician thinks the coma may be self-induced as a way of healing. When he recovers consciousness the Doctor manages to escape from the hospital and heads straight to UNIT headquarters and the TARDIS which has been relocated there. The military has only recovered fragments of the 50 or so objects that fell in what they thought was a meteor shower. Meanwhile, a nearby plastics factory seems to be producing something altogether different. A former employee, Ransome, tries to find out what is going on.

Having seen Ransome on the factory premises, Channing, sends a robotic being - an Auton - to deal with him. The terrified Ransome however is stopped by the army and taken to UNIT headquarters. The Doctor and Liz Shaw are making little headway in the lab with the equipment available to them. Lethbridge-Stewart has the key to the TARDIS and it's up to Liz to get her hands on it. The TARDIS is out of commission however and after Ransome's report, the Doctor suggests a visit to the factory. They learn the factory has been producing shop window mannequins and shipping them across the country. Meanwhile, the poacher who found one of the cylindrical objects that fell from space seeks a reward for what he's found. The Autons are soon on to him.

The Doctor determines that the globe-like objects that fell to Earth contain some form of intelligence and Liz suggests it may be part of a collective intelligence. Clearly the Autons have been created to house this alien intelligence. When they learn that the factory has produced a replica of Major General Scobie for Madame Tussaud's in London they realize the plot is to replace senior government officials with their lookalike Auton. The Doctor has to devise a weapon he can use against them.

The Doctor and Liz are summoned to the Wenley Moor Research Centre by the Brigadier, after several staff members suffer nervous breakdowns.

The Doctor attempts to convince people there are monsters in the caves, prompting Major Baker to start shooting at a reptile man.

The Silurians contact Quinn for help in retrieving their fellow while the Doctor and the Brigadier organise a search of the moors.

With Quinn dead, the Brigadier decides to take an armed party into the caves, prompting the Doctor to contact the Silurians himself.

Worried about the Old Silurian's growing friendship with the Doctor, the Young Silurian has the scientist infect Baker with a virus and then release him.

While the Doctor and Liz try to find a cure to the virus spread by Baker, the Young Silurian kills the Old Silurian and takes control of his people.

While Liz distributes the cure to the virus, the Doctor discovers the Silurians now plan to wipe out humanity by destroying the Van Allen Belt.

While the Brigadier investigates a loss of contact with Mars Probe 7, the Doctor realises signals coming from the probe are of extra-terrestrial origin.

UNIT retrieve the returned Recovery 7 but then Carrington hijacks it while the Doctor and Liz try to decode the signal he sent.

Carrington is holding the astronauts at a secret location but when he takes the Doctor, Liz and the Brigadier there they find they have been kidnapped.

Liz has been captured by Reegan's men and the Doctor begins to suspect Taltalian is more involved than he appeared.

The Doctor decides to take Recovery 7 back into space to search for the missing astronauts but Reegan sabotages the launch.

The Doctor speaks with the alien captain and learns the astronauts sent to Earth were ambassadors. However, before he can alert the authorities he is kidnapped by Reegan.

Carrington is planning to expose the aliens on live television and call for an interplanetary war and the Brigadier must rescue the Doctor and Liz in time to stop him.
Episode 19

Project Inferno is designed to drill down to the center of the Earth, where it will release a wonderful new energy source called Stahlman's Gas named after the project's director. But the Doctor realizes that unleashing Stahlman's Gas will have horrible consequences from the planet, fears confirmed when a power surge in the TARDIS console sends him to a hostile parallel universe where the project is nearing completion.

The Doctor begins to suspect that penetrating the earth's crust will create more Primords but Stahlman sabotages the computer to stop him proving it.

Episode 21

The Doctor finds himself in a parallel universe where Britain is a dictatorship and the Inferno Project is a slave labour camp policed by his friends' counterparts.

The Doctor attempts to convince the alternate Inferno staff that penetrating the earth's crust will cause a disaster but instead is imprisoned with an infected Bromley.
Episode 23

The earth's crust has been penetrated and, while the Doctor and Greg try to contain the disaster, the Doctor begins to realise the planet has passed the point of no return.
Episode 24

With the parallel earth doomed, the Doctor asks his friends' counterparts to help him return to his own world but the Brigade Leader only sees the TARDIS as a means of escape.

The Doctor is back in his own universe and must stop Stahlman before his earth suffers the same fate as the parallel one.
