Ultimately, the trail leads to the dying, vengeful Master, who wishes to harness the powers of Rassilon's greatest discovery, the mythical Eye of Harmony. But to do so would mean the destruction of Gallifrey, and to prevent this, the Doctor must risk his life in the surreal landscape of the Matrix

She and everyone recognize the Doctor immediately. He is the Evil One who, in their mythology, holds their god Xoanon prisoner and must be destroyed.

Despite protestations against being the Evil One, mounting evidence points to the Doctor's prior involvement with Leela's people, and an error in judgment he once made in their distant past that puts them all in immediate jeopardy.

The Doctor and Leela encounter the placid and mind-powerful Tesh, the complete opposite of the savage Saveteem. They recognize the Doctor, too, but to them he is Lord; however, when it becomes evident the Doctor threatens their living god, Xoanon, the Doctor becomes a marked man.

As the Saveteem and Tesh finally close in for a fight to the death, the powerful but long-suffering Xoanon ignores their strife to commit its full resources toward killing the Doctor, even to the extent of destroying everyone.

The TARDIS materialize aboard a sandminer, a mining ship on a desert planet run by a robot labor force headed by a fairly small but sniping human crew. As one crewman is discovered strangled to death, the Doctor and Leela arrive just in time to become the prime suspects.

As the strangulations continue and the humans aren't sure who to blame, Leela meets up with an anomaly among the robot crew - an inquisitive, supposedly mute single-function labor robot capable of independent reasoning. Meanwhile the Doctor starts looking into the possibility that the murderer is a robot, and another crew member is targeted for death.

Hearing about a man who grew up only around robots and who has threatened to start a robot revolution, and who may be aboard the sandminer under an assumed name, the Doctor takes D.84 to seek out a possible secret workshop where he would be restructuring robot programming. Meanwhile, as one crew member suffers a complete mental breakdown, reprogrammed robots are ordered to kill all remaining humans.

Episode 20

With secrecy no longer necessary for the robot revolution, Controller Taren Capel shuts down all friendly robots and gives the remaining humans an ultimatum, or else their deaths will be slow and painful. With no conventional weaponry aboard their commercial vessel, the humans do what they can to resist while giving the Doctor time to work out a permanent solution.

In Victorian London, the Doctor and Leela are on their way to a performance by Chinese magician Li H'sen Chiang when they come across a gang carrying away a body. At the police station, they learn that young girls have been going missing. They also meet the magician who has come to free one of his men. The man bears a tattoo of the black scorpion, one of the greatest criminal organizations of all time. When the Doctor finds a tuft of rat hair on the dead man, he and Leela explore the sewers. At the theater, the doorman Casey and the manager Jago see what is going on in the cellar.

It becomes more and more evident that the Palace Theatre, where Chang runs his magic act, is at the heart of the missing girls mystery, of murder, and of genetic disruptions. While Chang and the Tongs edge closer to the end of their master's long search through London, the Doctor discovers an elusive yet dangerous phantom skulking about the concert hall.

Escaping Mr Sin's attack, Leela follows him & Chang back to their lair under the Palace theater, the Doctor and Litefoot in hot pursuit. After attacking Weng-Chiang, she finds herself back in the sewer being chased by the vicious giant rat.

Episode 24

The Doctor rescues Leela from the giant rat in the sewer and he realizes that Weng-Chiang does not have the molecular key to open Professor Litefoot's cabinet. The Doctor and Leela go to the theater to take in Li H'Sen Chang's magic show and the Doctor becomes part of Chang's act. Someone dies in the process.

Episode 25

Weng-Chiang has stolen Professor Litefoot's cabinet but is not pleased when his men leave the key behind and later cannot find it. Leela and the Doctor go off to find the missing key while Jago and the professor follow Weng-Chiang's men and find themselves in the den of the scorpion.

Episode 26

Weng-Chiang confronts the Doctor who refuses to give him the molecular key unless Jago and Professor Litefoot are freed. They return to Weng-Chiang's lair where an exchange is made and Weng-Chiang confirms that the time travel cabinet is still in working order. As the Chinese time traveler tries to make his escape, the Doctor and the others must face Mr. Sin and the power of the dragon.
