Barbara goes off exploring - despite the Doctor's orders not to wander off - and is taken away by the high priest Autloc who believes she is the reincarnation of the goddess Yetaxa. They believe it is a sign that the rains - which are late - will now come. The high priest of sacrifice Tlotoxl recruits Ian to lead their army but he finds he has a rival in Ixta. Ian is less than comfortable with his role when he learns that they are to deliver the human sacrifice to the high priest at the rain ceremony. The Doctor emphasizes that they must not interfere with Aztec rituals, something that does not sit well with Barbara.

The Doctor admonishes Barbara for interfering with Aztec rituals and putting them all in danger. The Doctor suggests she play Tlotoxl, who believes she is a false god, off against Autloc who believes she is a true incarnation. Ian faces Ixta, his rival for leadership. Tlotoxl promises Ixta honor and glory if he destroys Ian. Meanwhile, the Doctor tries to get information about the temple's construction in order to find a way back into the burial chamber and the TARDIS. The architect's son, Ian's rival Ixta, wants a favor in return. Susan continues her studies of Aztec customs at the seminary.
Episode 29

There is to be a sacrifice in three days time and Barbara is determined to stop it. Ian recovers from the drug Ixta administered during their fight and finds him somewhat more conciliatory. In trying to gain Cameca's support, the Doctor finds that he has inadvertently become engaged to her. He may have found a way into the tomb however. Tlotoxl is determined to prove Barbara is a false god and tries to poison her. When that fails, he focuses on Susan, who is reluctant to accept some Aztec practices. When she refuses to marry the man chosen for her, Tlotoxl arranges for her to be publicly punished.
Episode 30

Ian finds a way out of the flooded tunnel and into the burial chamber. He is later arrested however when he tries to save Susan who is to be publicly punished just prior to the next sacrifice. Autloc comes to believe that Barbara is a false god, but she convinces him that Tlotoxl is plotting against them. Ian faces his foe for one last time as the Doctor builds a pulley to re-open burial chamber door and get access to the TARDIS.
