The first season of BBC America's first original scripted drama centers on Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones), an Irish-immigrant detective in 1864 New York City, who investigates crimes and seeks justice for the powerless in the notoriously crooked Five Points area. Corcoran's passion is fueled in part by his daughter's murder and his wife's disappearance. He is assisted in his legal endeavors by two Civil War compatriots. One, Robert Morehouse (Kyle Schmid), is from Manhattan's aristocracy, while the other, Matthew Freeman (Ato Essandoh), is a black physician who uses modern forensic methods to help solve cases, even though he receives no official credit for his secretive work. The crimes the three men probe thrust them into the contrasting worlds of elegant but corrupt Fifth Avenue to the emerging black community in northern Manhattan.
