When her younger sister comes to the Philly police for help, the team reopens the 2006 case of Anna Gunden, a 16-year-old Amish girl who was murdered while she was in Philadelphia, experiencing the Amish rite of passage called "rumspringa", a taste of the big bad world to determine if a youngster chooses to stay Amish, with her scared best friend Rachel Wagler. Seeking to see the ocean, they stay with shunned former village friend Jakob Beachy, who chose to remain 'English', but lapsed into drug addiction in the city. Initial suspect is his rogue friend Vince Patrielli, but the team finds all doubted their own choices, and mother Gunden's secret visit to retrieve her daughter triggered a tragic series of choices and events, which reprises as Anna is identified and brought home for burial.

A witness steps forward in 2007 before he looses his eyesight, finally bringing the bloody wallet of Bingo Zohar, a young white, promising rock n'roll singer, who was beaten to death in 1953. The orphan was raised by his conservative uncle Ed Valentine and worked in his music store, with black clerk Arthur 'Aces' Brown, sharing his taste for rock 'n roll, which the Valentines abhorred as barbaric, even undermining segregated society. When Ed's model son JP became the family's first college student, Bingo was 'promoted assistant manager', Aces fired another rock record having been found. Bingo dreamed of another future with his girl, but the Valentines scared her to pass for the risk of becoming a wilted rose if his talent didn't bring financial security as feared, although a song he wrote proved a hit for JP's new softy band. The team finds fatal jealousy the actual motive.

He was presented as card counter to meanwhile jailed mob boss Delonte, but he ordered the kid to crack a safe, only failed -dangerous, as warned- as he happened to be surprised by the owner, Augustine Bennet. The latter, a retired airplane designer, tried to become his mentor, but was found out fired for a fatal design error. Finally conflicting loyalties worked out tragically.

Desperate to take care of pre-teen son Robert 'Dobber', with graduate husband Felton unwilling to take a lowly job, she sought an income Felton considered unfit, as 'taxi dancer' in a nightclub, where she as the first to awaken romantic interest from rich widower Will Paige. She was introduced by sassy Penny Centavo, who ended up raped.

When the body of a newly missing 12-year-old Shemar Reynolds is found in a cargo container, checking on others from the contract owner -a fake name- yields the remains, each missing a finger, of three other victims: 12-year-old Damont Henderson, 9-year-old Kendrick Malone and 14-year-old Marcus Hollister, who vanished from 1999 to 2003, surprisingly with an Internet posting. The team realizes they're dealing with a serial killer and must figure out his M.O. and arrest him before he strikes again. They were all Afro-Americans linked to a single game arcade, picked up by the disguised killer. Actually they were all treated by the same rookie MD for the same injury, resulting from forced long standing on a tile, at a residential institution, under the same desperately-severe caretaker. However the finger is clue to a cruel twist, pointing to the last intended victim in time.
