Mary Wimsey, sister of the Duke of Denver and Lord Peter, becomes engaged to the Parisian-based David Cathcart. After the wedding date's been set, the Duke receives a letter from an old friend who just read the newspaper announcement. It accuses Cathcart of being a card cheat in France. Templers flare, and Cathcart breaks off the engagement and leaves the house. When he is found shot to death, suspicion falls on Denver, and he's arrested.
