When Pancho Duque is given a death sentence by his doctor, he wants to pass leadership of the Duque rum distillery to the next generation. His son Frank wants to sell the family sugar fields to an old family rival, Samuels, and take up other areas of business. But Pancho's stepson, Alex Vega, discovers Samuels is up to foul play and expects great payoff from government plans to support ethanol production from sugar, and Pancho selects Alex as his successor. Meanwhile, Alex's youngest son tries out for the baseball all-star team, his daughter starts going to clubs, and his oldest son Jaime tells his father he does not want to go to college. As if that weren't enough, Alex's wife has something to tell him.

Get your scorecards handy, because this is only the beginning of the strike-related fallout you'll wanna keep track of: • Although a location manager for CBS' Cane hired two security guards to help out while the show shot scenes from a long-completed script at a Hollywood cafe, 20 angry writers who were yelling and using a bullhorn brought the production to a halt anyway. • ABC has postponed the debut of its Sex and the City rip-off, Cashmere Mafia to sometime after Jan. 1. The Nov. 27 Dancing with the Stars finale is being expanded to two full hours to fill the void. • Sometime-writer Steve Carell didn't report to The Office yesterday, Rainn Wilson called in sick, and B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling, who are members of the show's writing staff, were on strike. Ratings: Prancing Stars, Cranky House Are Tops

ADDENDUM: Veronica Mars drew 3.3 mil in each of its last two season premieres, since many were asking.On this first "real" Tuesday of the new ratings season, as Dancing with the Stars' all-male revue averaged 18.34 million total viewers over its 90-minute run:8 pm/ETNCIS' shinier, happier backstage mood paid off on-screen, as it (13.65 mil) outperformed last year's premiere by 530 thou. Bones (8.25 mil) was down 16 percent versus its own previous opener. With three mil, Beauty and the Geek kissed off about 340K week-to-week.9 pm House's season premiere fared a hair better than last year's, with 18.13 mil. (What's more, it did better in key demos than the older-skewing DWTS and was Fox's highest-rated drama premiere in nearly seven years.) The Unit (10.73 mil) recruited 1.4 mil fewer than last fall.
