Mehmet Ali Dikerdem makes a coded phone call to Turkey from his flat in London in order to update information about his father, a 69-year-old former ambassador who is in jail with about 20,000 other political prisoners since the military coup d'etat on 12 September 1980 which overthrew the elected government, dissolved the parliament, banned all political parties, suppressed trade unions and organisations. Reports of torture have also become more widespread than ever before in Turkey which is an important member of NATO and an associate member of the Common Market. This Brass Tacks documentary investigates allegations of torture and imprisonment, and including parts filmed secretly inside the country where those talking to the reporter take serious risks.
