Being cooped up in the same room together with no air conditioning starts to affect the men negatively. It gets worse when they overhear Harris' very vocal dreams where he seems to have a problem with everyone. The rest of the men share personal stories and conversations while waiting to hear from the medical lab if the pox is smallpox or just chicken pox.

However, Wojo is deathly afraid of needles, and Harris tries to hook up with her even though she's not interested. Meanwhile, a man claiming to suffer from werewolf curse is brought in for public disturbance. He asks the officers to lock him up before he turns into a werewolf when full moon rises that evening.

A man called Mr. Unger, who hasn't left his apartment since World War II, is brought in for refusing to serve jury duty and immediately gets sick from too much smog in the air. A self-proclaimed prophet, Graham Roberts, is brought in for public disturbance but he keeps claiming that the world will end according to a biblical prophecy at 5:30 p.m. that day. Meanwhile, street kids Jilly Papalardo and Victor Kreutzer return to ask Fish for help, interrupting his plans to go out to dinner with his loving wife Bernice.

Wojo brings in a man called Al Mitchell for refusing to help a mugging victim, Mrs. Hanson, but Barney doesn't think that Mitchell's inaction is a crime. Shyster lawyer Arnold Ripner agrees to take Mitchell's case and sue the station. Meanwhile, Det. Maria Battista brings in a flasher, Charles Yusick, who asks his group therapy friend and lawyer Lyle W. Farber, who used to be a flasher, for help.

Wojo brings in a man called Charles Foster Keller for beating up a bookie who did not pay him his winnings from a horse race bet. However, Keller desperately claims that he didn't do it and explains that his other personality, a violent gambler called Lennie, is responsible. Wojo is skeptical but Dietrich tells him that multiple personality disorder caused by schizophrenia is a condition that could be real. Charles calls his doctor, Fitzgerald, to come and help him but soon loses control and the violent Lenny takes over, which works fine for Yemana since Lenny's tips seem to actually be good. However, when Charles' doctor arrives, she turns out to be a young, beautiful and elegant widow who eventually openly shows romantic interest in Barney and he, even though he's been happily married for 19 years, does reciprocate to a certain degree. Meanwhile, the power goes out in a number of city blocks leaving the station in pitch black darkness, and Dietrich has only so many matches to keep the light on. Luckily, their technician, Beckman, arrives to turn on the station's electric generator. Unfortunately, it is not in that great of a shape either. Later, a jewelry store owner, Mr. Rosten, is taken in after an accidental shooting incident involving Yemana.
