After a rise trough more prestigious TV stations all the way to L.A., a scandal forces news anchor Chuck Darling to return to his natal Pittsburgh. There he has pseudo-divine star status, but is hated by his also original co-anchor Kelly Carr, who fells passed-over. For would be-star reporter Gary Crezyzewski, it's another source of cruel abuse, although unintentional. The plot thickens when Kelly's daughter's paternity is questioned.

Anchor Chuck is now convinced that Kelly Carr's daughter Gracie is his and wants to step up as her father, but Kelly refuses him any access. Failing to care properly for the goldfish that the station gave "big fish in a small pond" Chuck makes him look irresponsible, so he demands that servile "boss" Ryan replace it. Meanwhile, the professional bumbling and "collegial" abuse continues, in Gary's case extremely painful in every sense.

So he wants the most exciting story to cover. Only, which is, the one he initially commandeers or the one he left for Kelly, who may be playing as dirty tricks on him? Menawhile Marsh steals Montana's lovely apprentice-assistant, promising her his neighbor Troy's dead-eager grandson, but lazy old Troy turns up himself and neither seems to dare sack him.

Gracie's class visits the TV station. Ryan sees a younger version of himself in chubby nerd Brian, but gravely underestimates that kid. When classmate Xander Tucker seems to bully Gracie, Kelly first forbids Chuck to intervene 'too macho', then grossly abuses the knave herself, which causes well-deserved trouble, while the kids' story proves quite innocent. Gary wins a bet and learns about Marsh's soft spot, a poet reminding him of his dad. Stutterer Montana is professionally outclassed by a schoolgirl.

Chuck is eager to oblige a jacuzzi-warming party invitation from floozies, so he sneaks out early at the 'birthday party' Marsh throws for him (albeit 5 months off). Ryan and Gary equally shocked and fascinated by the explicit interior which testifies to Marsh and his wife Peg's 'healthy' sexy life. Kelly, already mistaken for an AA member by junior colleague, is however panics about an as such innocent picture, which might serve as a clue to Gracie's parentage, while Chuck feels it's time to come clear.

When finally told she has a dad, Chuck, Gracie first scolds ma an incorrigible wicked liar, then sulks she doesn't want a dad or anything to change at home. Flashbacks show how a really drunk New Year's Eve after-office-party at Kelly's resulted, painstakingly, in her conception. Chick's initial paternal action goes abysmally, but he wins the brat over completely by buying her a puppy.

Just as Chuck and Kelly are ready to tell the office that Chuck is Gracie's father, the station kicks off a Chuck and Kelly advertising campaign that is ripe with sexual innuendo.
Episode 15
Chuck acts pretty jealous when Kelly accepts to date his handsome professional rival Craig St. Claire. Worse, he's accidentally forced to take ghastly make-up girl Margaret, an avid fan, to the same restaurant. Yet once there, Chuck proves charming company, while Craig walks out because Kelly can't keep her eyes off Chuck.
Episode 16
Chuck attempts to buy his first house in order to impress the attractive real estate agent, Colette, and to prove to Kelly that he was growing up and taking responsibility for his life. However, the technology-advanced house seems to have other ideas about Chuck moving in!
Episode 17
On a very slow news day Ryan decides to pad the broadcast with human interest stories much to chuck's annoyance. During the argument Ryan receives a call about a bank robbery in progress and that the robber has taken hostages and wants Chuck to negotiate. Kelly reminds Chuck that he is a father now and doesn't want him to go but Chuck reminds her that he is a news man and will be OK. Gary covers the scene from the outside and Chuck goes inside the bank to talk to the hostage taker and eventually hits upon a very novel solution to the crisis.
