Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert give all thumbs up to four new movies. Both enjoy The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) for its old-fashioned qualities; Siskel emphasizes what is fresh and original as well. Breaking In (1989) is a quirky caper comedy with heart. The critics are especially happy to get a good Burt Reynolds performance after years of dumb car-crash flicks. Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) is "cynical and despairing and sometimes very funny portrait of the modern world." Siskel says it distills the essence of the 1980s. They consider Look Who's Talking (1989) to be a charming domestic comedy with a potentially dreary gimmick that proves to be funny. Finally, they pay tribute to the late Bette Davis.

Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert review five new movies. A split vote on Family Business (1989). Both critics agree the half-comic, half-serious crime movie is uneven, but Ebert liked pieces well enough to recommend it. Another split vote on Blaze (1989). Ebert liked the characters; Siskel felt they were cute but didn't really take him anyplace. Two thumbs up for the David Mamet-scripted comedy, We're No Angels (1989), a very loose remake of the 1955 Humphrey Bogart movie. Siskel loved everything about it; Ebert is only tepidly positive. Two thumbs down for the The Wizard (1989), a poor children's movie that exists only to plug Nintendo. Two more thumbs down for _The Rosegarden (1989)_, a well-meaning Holocaust movie that unintentionally trivializes it.

Sequelitis hits "Ghostbusters 2" and "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier." Big stars in big bombs feature Clint Eastwood in "Pink Cadillac," Patrick Swayze in "Next of Kin," Burt Reynolds in "Physical Evidence," and Charles Bronson in "Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects."

Siskel didn't buy the story about a West German immigrant woman in Arkansas stealing the good life on credit; Ebert did. Too Beautiful for You (1989): two thumbs up for the French love story. Both critics praise its adult attitude toward sex and physical appearance; Ebert criticizes only the fantasy sequences.
