Pia sets out to find ticks, the scary superheroes. Tick researcher Gerhard tells her incredible things: The tiny creepy crawlies breathe only eight times a day and can even survive ten days underwater. They're also frugal, as two years without a blood meal is no problem for these survivalists. What makes ticks particularly scary, however, is that they can carry dangerous pathogens that can even be fatal to humans if infected. Therefore, their tick hunt begins in protective clothing. In a meadow, Pia and Gerhard drag white sheets across the grass. They catch female and male ticks, as well as nymphs, or teenage ticks. In Gerhard's lab, Pia can't help but be amazed: When greatly magnified, the millimeter-sized arachnids reveal themselves as miracles of nature. A special organ for detecting blood donors is located on their front feet. The sword-like stinging apparatus is covered with tiny barbs. And the feet are constructed like suction cups, allowing ticks to even crawl up glass. And that's something only true superheroes can do.

But in many major German cities, this hardly ever happens anymore. Things are quite different in Berlin, which is why Berlin is also known as the "Capital of Sparrows." Pia learns from Berlin sparrow rescuer Claudia why the little house sparrows are disappearing from the cities and why they're still thriving in Berlin. She takes the animal reporter on a sparrow tour through the capital. Together, they discover nests in the craziest places and watch the house sparrows taking sand baths. This has earned them the nickname "dirty sparrows." Undeservedly, as Pia learns. Claudia's colleague Antonia shows Pia how to help the little birds. The two build a nesting box and make a window guard to prevent the sparrows from flying into the windows. Pia also learns about sparrow-friendly plants that can be planted in the garden or on the balcony.
