Gazza, an immigrant cabbie is pulled from his cab and savagely beaten up by a psychotic man named Corey who is then brought into All Saints by Jo after an incident on the top of a building. The team have to face the fallout when the two come together in the E.D. A subsequent investigation by Gabby and Steve show that Corey has been taking sleeping tablets to help him sleep and mixed them with alcohol causing his psychotic episode. Meanwhile, Bart helps a couple come to terms with the woman's returning cancer. Elsewhere, Mike gets his Medical Response Unit up and running and starts recruiting new staff including Jo and Steve. Is Frank going to like it when he finds out? Probably not!

Juliet tells Mike she is going back to Melbourne as his new job is taking up all of his time.

In the E.D. Adam treats a couple and believes that the man is beating the woman because her injuries don't add up and she is asking for drugs repeatedly. Elsewhere, Amy continues to tease Bart after their night together which makes him uneasy.

The Medical Response Unit are called out to a cave collapse and find a badly injured Ken Bracey, whom Frank diagnosed previously with Fatal familial insomnia (FFI), and his young son Dion nearby. Steve and Jo stay behind when Ken's wife Roz informs Frank back at base that their daughter Marley is also missing. She is eventually found with her foot caught in an animal trap. Tests in the E.D. show that he had taken sleeping pills which are fatal for his condition. It also showed that the children were also drugged. When Frank queried Roz on it she told him that the kids tested positive for the disease also and it was now apparent that he was trying to kill himself and his family. Elsewhere, Amy and Bart continue to be at each others throats so much that Frank threatens either one with dismissal unless they sort it out - which they do in their own mutually satisfying way. Meanwhile, Frank takes pity on an elderly lady who worries more about her pets than her own health.

Meanwhile, Frank takes a personal day from All Saints to attend a recital but the violinist, Annalise Lang, has a seizure and Frank brings her to All Saints where he eventually diagnoses Farr's Disease - a degenerative disease with no cure. Elsewhere, Adam and Bart tend to a seriously ill back-packer and find out that he took part in a drug trial in Paris which may have caused his illness. Bart and Amy go to dinner to discuss their relationship.

Bart diagnoses Ian with CVST but before Bart can treat him Ian leaves the hospital to follow Clare who has left with Steve. Meanwhile, Bart tells Amy their relationship is over and Adam tries to counsel a young woman confront her feelings of guilt over a car accident.

Gabby overhears Ian saying that he will never let Claire go and she fears for her safety. Elsewhere, Amy tries to reason with Bart to give their relationship another try but he refuses.

Elsewhere, Frank finds out about Bart and Amy's relationship and he is not a happy man.

A young expectant mother is admitted with breathing difficulties and Charlotte has to break the news to her and her partner that she has a cancerous mass that will ultimately cause the termination of her foetus. Steve and Mike nearly come to blows over his treatment of a woman trapped in a motor vehicle. But the experience causes both Steve and Claire to take another chance on their relationship. Meanwhile, Frank isn't too happy that the MRU is getting great publicity from a magazine article.

Elsewhere, Adam's mother Debra contacts Von and asks to see him but he refuses. His reaction to a bi-polar patient leads him to telling Gabrielle that his mother stabbed his bi-polar dad to death.

The M.R.U. are called to a rural farm where a man has fallen into a toxic grain silo. Jo manages to secure the man eventually but is nearly overcome by fumes and Steve is called in to help. Later Jo collapses and is forced to accept that she is not invincible after all. Meanwhile, one of Von's outpatients - a retired concierge - is admitted and he begins to tire all the staff out with his stories of celebrities who stayed at the hotel but not naming any. Claire received flowers and assumes they are from Steve until he tells her he didn't send any. Ian gets a job as a mechanic with the M.R.U. to get nearer to Steve and cause him harm. Frank and Adam treat a young sportswoman who cannot swallow and find a diagnosis that will alter her life drastically. Meanwhile, it's Frank's birthday but he's not in the mood for celebrating.

Frank is determined to get back into hands-on medicine after he feels he is losing his joy for the job.

The MRU team are called out to a religious commune, the Haven, where there are reports of injuries after a dawn police raid. One of the injured persons is Caleb who has endured a savage beating by another cult member. There is another patient at the Farm, a very pregnant, very fearful young woman whose rare allergic reaction puts her life, and that of her baby, in grave peril. Katarina struggles on with her Internship, now buoyed by Frank's determination to battle for her with Admin. When he returns, however, he has been forced into a tactical retreat. A sceptical Charlotte doesn't think he will prevail, and wonders if Frank is going to such lengths for a fellow doctor out of comradeship or something more? Frank is left to ponder his own feelings, and their implications. Steve and Claire come to the end of their road, via very different paths.

Blood Is Thicker

The MRU are called out to a riot where a youth has been stabbed. Two brothers involved in the confrontation end up in the All Saints ED. Nick leaves the hospital intent on revenge after his younger brother, Ryan, dies in Resus. Adam takes it upon himself to try and stop him but Nick stabs him leaving Adam lying in a pool of blood. It is some time before Adam is found, unconscious and bleeding in the hospital grounds. He is rushed to the ED, where his friends and colleagues do their best to keep their emotions in check while they fight to save his life. Frank, realizing something is seriously wrong when Katerina walks off the job. He turns up at her home to find her in shock and unable to tell him how she came to be covered in blood or whose it is. He gently coaxes the truth from her; it is Adam's blood on her hands, Katerina's explanation for how she came to be home, covered in Adam's blood reveals more about Katerina than Frank could ever have guessed at; and it is truly shocking. Von and Debra, Adam's mother, end up at his bedside. Bitter words are exchanged about who has the right to be there. Adam, humiliated by his mother's behaviour takes Von's side, wishing he could banish Debra from his life completely. The situation forces Von to reassess her role in the lives of Adam and Debra. Von's day is also spent dealing with Sandy, the mother of Ryan and Nick. When Sandy first arrives at the hospital it is to hear the worst possible news, that her youngest son has died. As the day progresses the devastating news keeps on coming for Sandy, and Von is there by her side to do what ever she can. Sandy's loss has a profound effect on Von's attitude towards Adam and Debra.

The boss is surprisingly dismissive of the accident, blaming it on the apprentice's clumsiness - a claim angrily denied by the young man who works with them. It soon becomes clear that not everything is as it seems here and when the MRU team is called back to the same place later in the day, they find justice has been served in the most extraordinary way. On his first day back after his stabbing, Adam and Von are forced to put aside their awkwardness to help a 17-year-old who is discovered to be pregnant and the identity of the father both shocks the team and complicates the situation. Muckraking journalist Barry Goldsworthy has been hit by a car driven by the subject of his newest witch-hunt and intends to sue despite the fact that he has suffered no injury whatsoever. When Gabrielle tries and fails to eject him from the ED, Frank reads him the riot act and in doing so reveals that he knows of Barry's past - that he was once a writer of note but a nervous breakdown saw the end of his 'legitimate' reputation. Frank realises that the man has more in common with Katerina than first appearances would indicate - and he looks to kill two birds with one stone by putting the two of them together. Mike drops a bombshell on Jo. He thinks Declan's accident was caused by an undiagnosed neurological condition. Is Jo about to lose the love she's just found?

Amy comes up with a controversial solution for a patient who looks likely to die a virgin and Charlotte wants to restart the intern programme again but Frank isn't keen after what happened with Katerina.

Moving on 2

With Steve out of action, Adam joins the MRU to help rescue two men who have fallen into a disused mine. Adam's in awe as Jo and Mike abseil into the mine but he soon joins them to play an important role in completing life saving surgery underground. Back in the ED, the team's fighting a losing battle to save the other man's life. A chance discovery reveals what's really wrong with the man and the trail of betrayal which led to his scrape with death. A new intern arrives but Frank refuses to acknowledge him. After dealing with a young woman in a critical condition, Elliott proves he's got what it takes and restores Frank's faith in the intern program. The only person Elliott fails to impress is Bart. Amy is tiring of Bart's jealousy but it turns out Bart's first impression of Elliott might be on the money. Steve continues to support Gabrielle as she struggles to come to terms with her father's death. Von helps Adam see things from his mother's perspective which finally allows him to let her go.

Win Some, Lose Some

The MRU Team is called to a horse training facility where a horse has been spooked, thrown its rider and trampled two others. The rider, Harry, has head injuries, while the facility's owner, Evan, has a crushed foot and ankle, while vet Katherine was kicked, but seems the least injured of the three. Steve takes Harry to hospital in the chopper, leaving Mike and Jo to attend to Evan and Katherine. Faced with a question of which patient to prioritise next, Mike recklessly decides to take both in the chopper at the same time. Steve protests that Mike is putting the lives of both patients at risk. Mike overrules him. The chopper takes off with two very unstable patients crammed inside. Evan and Katherine make it to hospital. However, when Katherine learns the severity of her condition, she begs to speak to her children and see her husband one last time before going to Theatre. The Resus team has no choice but to wait. Her husband arrives but as she is being transported to Theatre, the tear ruptures fully and she arrests. Mike and the Resus team fight to save her, to no avail. Katherine's husband Dave assaults Mike, believing that if he had made Katherine his first priority, she might still be alive. Gabrielle is already stretched thin from trying to juggle work and the family farm. The last thing she needs is a needy, demanding patient. However, that's just what she gets when a woman presents herself for treatment. Lorraine has gone virtually blind, apparently overnight. Adam eventually diagnoses a potentially fatal condition as Gabrielle finds that Lorraine's situation resonates with her own unresolved grief - is Lorraine's long, lonely road of unending grief also Gabrielle's fate? Unable to continue alone, Gabrielle gratefully accepts Steve's offer to help with the upkeep of the family farm.

The MRU find themselves unwittingly in the eye of a media storm when they are called out to treat Tilly, a sixteen-year-old girl who has been kidnapped by her father, Noah. They have been on the run in dense bushland for two weeks. But when Mike gets held by Noah at knifepoint, it is quickly realised that all is not as it seems. Noah's motivation is to protect his daughter from her step-father, Lance. And when Tilly looks to be dying from her injuries, Mike makes a bold decision about Noah's future. Once in the ED, Mike manages the impressive task of keeping Tilly safe from Lance when he arrives with her mother. Mike outwits Lance causing him to fall on his own sword, paving the way for a heartfelt reunion between the fugitive Noah and his injured daughter. Bart, Gabrielle and Elliott also have their hands full. A spoilt Corrine Martin has presented with severe stomach pains after undergoing gastric banding overseas, and in her desperate attempt to lose weight, has developed necrosis of the stomach. Corrine's condition takes an unexpected turn and the team are left to wonder at Elliott's odd response. Adam, Charlotte and Amy treat a personal trainer who has fractured his penis in an extra-marital fling. Despite his very serious injuries, Grant forbids the team from telling his wife, Elaine, what really happened. But when Elaine arrives, she soon uncovers the truth and the couple are forced to confront the cracks in their relationship. In the middle of this, Von is forced to break bad news to Adam. Adam's grief is expressed first as officiousness, then as anger as he snaps at the bickering Elaine and Grant and then Charlotte. Later, Adam shows up at Charlotte's to apologise for his poor form, only to find himself settling in for dinner.

Too Close for Comfort 2

The MRU is called out to an explosion at a plastics factory where multiple casualties are expected. The boss, Tim, has dragged out worker, Brian, who has extensive lung damage. Tim is particularly devastated when he learns that his workers started early as a favour for him, a gesture which put them in the line of fire. Jo rescues young apprentice Sally who has severe internal damage. She's a sweetie and it's clear Tim has a real soft spot for her. Bart and Amy warm to this girl and they soon learn that she's hiding a devastating secret. Mike and Jo pull Theo out of the wreckage. He has multiple shrapnel injuries, together with disorientation and amnesia. As they bring him out, Mike hears the last worker call from the ruins so he returns to help him. He enters just as another explosion hits. It throws Mike backwards and kills the last worker inside. Tim watches it all unfold with increasing horror. Mike is injured and there is concern that the pain on his right side indicates serious damage to his one and only kidney. Von and Frank deal with Mike under a veil of secrecy while Mike prepares for news which could end his career. When nothing else can be done at the scene, Tim is brought into the ED. As he sits in the corridor, waiting for a doctor and devastated at the sight of his injured workers all around him, he has a sudden and delayed reaction to the blast. Steve is on hand for the emergency. Fearing he's going to die, Tim makes a deathbed declaration. Meanwhile, Charlotte's none to pleased when she and Adam are assigned to work on Brian together - she had an erotic dream about him and can't shake it off so she spends the rest of the day freezing him out. She struggles to focus on the case under the watchful eyes of Gabrielle who ultimately suggests that Charlotte should not be ashamed of her attraction to Adam. But Charlotte reminds her that her last workplace tryst left her pregnant and alone. Frank assigns Elliott and Claire to deal with Theo, making it clear the neurological issue is the priority. When Theo's obs appear normal, Elliott decides to remove the shrapnel first so he can then deal with his neurology unencumbered. The MRU team are called to a serious accident at a remote farm. Mike braves his own personal injuries to deal with the patient, despite serious reservations from all those around him. A woman presents having suffered a miscarriage. A history of SIDS with two previous babies throws a raft of distressing possibilities at Von and Charlotte. Bart finds himself dealing with an old school friend of Elliott's. The symptoms of this patient and what he reveals about Elliott prove to be totally unforseen.

With Mike still recovering from his injuries, Steve steps into the role of team leader in the MRU when they are called out to help two men who have been injured by a malfunctioning lift. One casualty is profoundly deaf and suffering from severe abdominal injuries, having been trapped in the door, while his brother has an arm mangled in the winch mechanism. Rescue fail to arrive and a heated debate ensues as to whether to amputate the brother's arm to free him. Steve eventually backs down but when Mike questions the decision, Steve can't help but feel he failed to live up to the responsibilities of leadership. Joan Marden, the former Director of Nursing at All Saints, presents at ED suffering from a nasty burn. She has early onset Alzheimer's and Von is shaken to see how much her friend has gone downhill since she last saw her. Von has trouble organising appropriate care for Joan, and eventually steamrolls Frank into getting her admitted to avoid making the painful decision. Although sympathetic, Frank makes it clear what he thinks of Von's tactics. Late that night, a rare moment of lucidity from Joan encourages both Von and Claire to reach out to others. Gabrielle's sentimentality towards her late father is fuelled when a young woman brings her own dad to the ED with a broken ankle. About to leave the family nest on the trip of a lifetime, Carly worries that her father's clumsiness is a manifestation of his reluctance to let her go. When the patient is discovered to have something far more serious than just a fractured ankle, he forbids Charlotte and Gabrielle to tell his daughter the truth. Gabrielle disagrees with his decision and Charlotte is forced to stop her from taking matters into her own hands. The situation helps Gabrielle to realise she too is shielding someone from the truth. But will she be able to rise above her own hypocrisy? After a public tongue lashing from Frank, Elliott chooses his career over Bree and ends their relationship. Bree finds comfort in good ol' fashioned friendship, with important input from a six-pack and a greasy pizza.

While Von makes final preparations to leave All Saints, Adam, Charlotte and Gabrielle find themselves faced with a heartbreaking challenge. Frank gives Elliott an ultimatum. Mike's kidney test results arrive and they're not at all what he's expecting. And Steve struggles to deal with Gabrielle's decision.
