He has a head injury and is covered in bruises but has no memory of how he got hurt. Cate, one of his former students, tries to get through to him but to no avail. A woman presents with a broken wrist but tells Nelson she has a terminal illness. She won't say what it is, though, leaving Nelson to play medical detective. He's still fragile after his wedding day tragedy but seems to be coping. A shocking revelation leaves Nelson's future at All Saints in doubt.

No Way Out

Already on the edge, a grieving Nelson is horrified when a half-empty bottle of whiskey falls out of his bag in front of Frank, at the end of his nursing shift. While Nelson, a recovering alcoholic, insists that he has no idea how the bottle came to be in his bag, Frank doesn't quite swallow it. However, Nelson is outraged when his workmates seem to have trouble believing him. Deanna sets her sights on handsome young doctor Jack. And she quickly makes it clear to Jack that her interest in him is more than just professional. Meanwhile, still reeling from the moment a bottle of whiskey rolled out of his bag in front of a disbelieving Frank, Nelson is far from impressed when Frank confronts him with accusations over the difficult matter. Before long, a heated argument has erupted between the pair in the middle of the emergency department.

A Work Cover claim has Charlotte and Nelson's replacement, Deanna, at loggerheads when an investigator for the insurance company insists their patient is a fraud. A middle aged man presents with stomach pain that is difficult to diagnose. No one can quite believe the cause when it is eventually located. Deeply concerned about Nelson's frame of mind since he quit his job in the Emergency Department in the middle of his shift, both Frank and Von decide to pay their former co-worker visits. But it's safe to say that Frank and Von receive anything-but-friendly receptions from Nelson, who is still outraged that his colleagues wrongly assumed he had begun drinking again. Deanna shows a side to her that Jack has not seen before.

Facing the Music

A chaotic shift in the ED is complicated by the arrival of two Organisation and Methods officers sent by Alison Newell to evaluate the department. Tensions skyrocket in Resus when the staff is faced with an unusual resuscitation of a patient who appears to be slipping in and out of consciousness as CPR is being performed. The disturbing sight upsets Dan who walks out in the middle of the procedure. It seemed to be just another day on the job for Von, who is still trying to come to terms with the murder of her niece, Kerry. Nursing an insulin-dependent diabetic, Bob Tyrell, who has a leg wound, Von helps him the best she can. But things take a dramatic turn for the nurse and before the day's end, Von's future hangs in the balance when she finds herself before Dr Newell and the hospital board accused of negligence. Charlotte fights Admin to find a bed for a patient.

Behind Closed Doors

While the Emergency Department welcomes it's new doctor, Registrar of Emergency Medicine Sean Everleigh, Dan is thrown to find a young woman he recognises from his past denies knowing him when she is brought into the ward suffering from nasty leg and stomach injuries sustained in an accident on a railway platform. Frank becomes suspicious of Deanna's motives as the end of her stint as Nursing Unit Manager approaches. Nelson's last case to gain his Practitioner's accreditation proves to be a trying one when an old adversary brings his wife into the ED for treatment.

The Mercy Seat

Frank is caught in the crossfire when a critically injured Jehovah's Witness requires blood transfusions to survive. A former TV personality, and hero of Dan's, is brought in and it soon becomes apparent that all is not what it seems with her home life. Deanna lodges a sexual harassment complaint against Frank.

Shadows of the Heart

Eighteen-year-old Jacinta Cosgrove is brought in after a terrible MVA and the battle to save such a young life is stressful for everyone. But it is even more heartbreaking dealing with her distraught father, Ian. And that stress hits Frank twice as hard as he struggles to keep his cool in the aftermath of the sexual harassment claim made by Deanna. Something he fails to do as he collapses with a heart attack, revealing more of his personal life than he would like. Newly certified as a Nurse Practitioner, Nelson struggles to diagnose the mystery pain of his first patient, Melanie Sonter. Jack is drawn deeper into his relationship with Deanna as she clings desperately to her place at All Saints in the face of mounting hostility. But it isn't Deanna who finds she can no longer take it.

Episode 10

Just Desserts

Deanna makes a dramatic departure from the Emergency Department and it's not a moment too soon, as far as her staff are concerned. But while those who worked alongside Deanna are thrilled to see the back of her, one person is left reeling - the man who fell deeply for her, Dr Jack Quade. Jack is shattered when he's forced to realise that everything his colleagues have been saying about Deanna is true. Earlier, recovering alcoholic Nelson discovers it was Deanna who placed a bottle of whisky in his locker as a way to force him out of his job so she could take his place in the ED permanently. Nelson reacts quickly and angrily. Sean and Charlotte are forced to take unpopular action to save an Ambo's crushed leg. Frank, recovering from his heart attack, proves to be anything but a model patient.

Brothers in Arms

Frank pays a surprise visit to the Emergency Department and takes a back seat when the Medical Response Unit is called to attend to an accident in a commercial kitchen where a man's hand is caught in a mincer. The Emergency Department team spends their day trying to protect Frank from extra stress but stress is difficult to avoid in the Emergency Department, especially with Frank's domineering ex-wife, hospital Director of Medicine Alison Newell, hanging about. Von and Nelson face their demons when a letter with devastating news arrives for Nelson. Now that Deanna has handed in her resignation, her ex-lover, Jack, gathers his courage to face up to Frank.

Getting to Know You

Jack surprises his colleagues when he arrives in the Emergency Department with a patient to whom he is more closely bonded than he realises. He has pulled his landlady out of a fire which ravaged their shared house and despite his own injuries, stays at her side to help her deal with her treatment and recovery. Mystified by a patient's unidentifiable illness, Sean and Cate sneak off to his house where they uncover his horrific past: haunted by the tragic deaths of his wife and children, Bruce Ahearne became a shut-in, not talking, and turning to self-medication with drugs bought off the internet to deal with his pain. He eventually got in over his head and now finds himself in hospital suffering from organ damage. Nelson's mounting errors at work are trying Frank's patience which in turn pushes Nelson further towards the breaking point. Dan offers a room to Jack who has found himself homeless after the fire.

Sink or Swim

New intern Bartholomew West has a nightmare first shift in the ED. Between irritating Frank by his mere presence, saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and stumbling through his assignments, Bart finds reason to question his ability but an encouraging word goes a long way to ease his mind. A pair of perplexing patients resulting from a fight at a house party give the staff cause for concern when their symptoms don't coincide with the doctors' expectations for their respective injuries. Jack trusts his gut feeling and forces his superiors to take notice while Bart has his hands full coping with a sudden emergency he may be the cause of. Frank is stunned when Nelson turns up on his doorstep in the middle of the night, looking far from himself. Dazed and with nasty wounds on his bare feet, Nelson is clearly in a bad way. What's more, by night's end he will have made a heartbreaking decision. But it's a decision he knows he has to make-and one that Frank helps him to carry out. Nelson, who is still failing to cope with the horrific murder of his bride-to-be, Kerry, pleads with Frank to admit him to a psychiatric ward.

An Apple a Day

All Saints new Head of Surgery, Mike Vlasek, has Jack Quade in his sights. Sean and Cate find there's something fishy about a little girl's illness. Bart bumbles his way to a brilliant solution although not without consequences, and he finally makes a breakthru with Frank who agrees to be his mentor. Frank is infuriated by the arrogance of Mike Vlasek, the new Head of Surgery. Alison has a shocking announcement for Frank: she's taking leave to go overseas, taking Kathleen with her. Dan reluctantly steps forward to become the Acting NUM.

Episode 16

The Way of It

Sean and Cate go out with the Medical Response Unit to save a young man whose head has been skewered by a metal spike in an accident at a medieval festival. Dan's first shift as Acting NUM is anything but smooth sailing as he deals with Frank's bad mood over the new Surgical Consultant. Erica helps Bart, the new Intern, guide a returning patient through his last hours after he asks for a non resuscitation order to be placed in his medical records. The staff change room is robbed and Jack assists Mike Vlasik in a challenging surgical procedure.

Episode 17

A Rock and a Hard Place

A couple on their way to the airport to begin an overseas holiday end up in the ED after an MVA. Ignoring medical advise, they are desperate to get on their way as soon as possible, but when x-rays reveal the truth about their situation, an armed stand-off ensues in the ED with Von caught in the middle. A young mother, the victim of a bag snatch, is dragged along behind a car but refuses to undergo critical surgery until her missing baby is found. Kate's defense of the mother's right to choose puts her into conflict with Mike who wants the decision taken out of her hands. Frank takes a "sickie" and feels the dirt beneath his feet for the first time in ages, much to the relief of Dan. Charlotte is surprised by Doug Spencer's unexpected return and although it is brief, he leaves a lasting impression on young Bart. Dan's days as NUM are numbered, much to his relief.

Episode 18

One for the Road

After a drunken poker night, Dan and Sean find themselves at loggerheads with a young man who shows signs of organ rejection. Sean suspects his lifestyle as a DJ may be the cause but the man is adamant he's done nothing to jeopardise his new liver. Mike gives a very hungover Jack the lead at the operating table for the first time. Jack tries to back out but Mike's ultimatum forces Jack into the OR where his impaired ability complicates an already difficult procedure. A queasy Frank has to deal with a particularly nasty throat abscess and the arrival of Gabrielle Jaeger, the new Nursing Unit Manager.

Episode 19

By Choice or by Chance

Frank and Mike's negotiation skills are put to the test when a father, determined to donate a kidney to his desperately ill son, goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure the operation goes ahead. A speed skater's critical condition forces Sean to perform emergency cranial surgery in the ED but an errant comment by Erica sends him over the edge. Bart the intern is plagued with doubts as his time at All Saints comes to an end.

Episode 20

Tough Love

Sean and Erica are put under enormous emotional strain as they try to help a twenty-two year-old patient cope with the fact that she may never walk again and that her boyfriend may not be there to help her. Dan confronts Sean about the way he hides his thoughts about patients from the nurses and Gabrielle calls Dan into her office. Mike pushes Jack to be the doctor he can be when they clash over an accident-prone patient. Charlotte prods Frank to help her with her Fellowship Portfolio and Mike continues to frustrate Frank by intruding further into his life.

Episode 21

When Duty Calls

Mike attends his first MVA as part of the MRU and impresses all by trying everything to sustain the life of a young driver. Charlotte and Erica clash over how to best handle a seventeen-year-old sexual assault victim. Gabrielle continues to look out for new ways to maximise the potential of her staff.

Episode 22

Two by Two

Three patients present in the ED with similar symptoms within a few hours of each other. One dies. Is this the beginning of a fatal epidemic or just a coincidence? An old university mate of Frank's turns up in the Emergency Department in a bad way. Mike and Frank clash over how best to treat him, medically or surgically. Jack attempts to play mediator and gets caught in the crossfire. Eve's agent is planning a grand European tour for her. Frank clearly isn't keen on the idea but will he ask Eve not to go? Bart returns looking to find a job in the ED while Von receives word she's been made the department's new Transitional Care nurse.

Episode 23

Drawing the Line

Mike, Cate and, later Jack, find their 15 minutes of fame - much to Frank's fury and disgust - when they battle to save the life of a badly injured reality show contestant live on air. Dan learns not to judge his patients by their looks, no matter how intimidating or extreme, treat a young man with a jaw dropping facial piercing.

Episode 24

Truth Hurts

After a man who has been shot is dumped in the hospital grounds, he needs surgery to save his life and Mike Vlasek is called in. However, Jack is furious when Mike leaves him to fend for himself in the middle of the difficult operation. Erica and Zoe Gallagher (an old friend of Frank's) deal with a girl that presents with a broken arm but is not all she seems to be. The girl's mother is adamant that Dr Gallagher not treat her daughter further for fear of her extraordinary genetic condition being revealed. Frank has a special delivery to make for Dennis Pool & his partner Jacqueline and he has a last minute change of heart about letting Eve go to Europe.

Episode 25

Extreme Measures

When attempts to resuscitate an MVA victim fail, the team puts his cause of death down to injuries sustained in the accident. But they soon realise the victim was dead before he got in the car and find themselves dealing with a murder mystery and a murderer. A man with a hook stuck inside his penis claims he was involved in a freak fishing accident but his story seems a little far fetched. But eventually the truth comes out - along with the hook.

Mind Games

The team are baffled by a woman with many faces who confounds the staff with her varied behaviour. Spence returns but not everyone is pleased to see him. Sean and Von track down the cause of an elderly couple's illness. In light of his sudden resignation, Frank challenges Mike to stay and face his demons.

One Wrong Step

Dan and Zoe get heated over a patient's diagnosis. Charlotte struggles with juggling work, her studies and her pregnancy while Spence commences work on the Paediatric team. Jack makes a brilliant save but finds himself ostracised by the surgical team after Mike's departure. Erica and Bart enter the lion's den when they try to set Von up with a patient.

Episode 28

Private Lives

Jack finds himself at odds with the new trauma surgeon at the site of a gruesome motor vehicle accident. A man presents with a voracious rash and the team are horrified when they discover its cause. Von finds a teenager's emotional pain far worse than her physical injuries.

Spence's thoughts are with Charlotte as he treats a woman who looks to be miscarrying. Jack is rocked by a scandalous revelation about Bianca, while a former nurse creates bedlam in the emergency department.

A young boy with severe muscular dystrophy arrives at the hospital following a drug overdose. When he wakes and screeches that he would have preferred to die, the hospital staff must decide where they stand. Dan and Sean struggle to discover why a young man is running a dangerously high temperature. Their efforts to help him aren't aided by his girlfriend who withholds crucial, life saving, information. Frank makes a surprise trip to Paris to convince Eve to marry him but she's too busy flirting with a svelte Frenchman. Sean is shocked when a family member is admitted for treatment.

Episode 31

Ain't Love Grand

Spence presents Sean and his sister, Jenna, with some unsavoury treatment options for Sean's young niece, putting Spence and Sean at odds with each other. Deciding what to do would be challenging under any circumstances but the family harbours a secret that weighs even more heavily on their choice. Jo, an old university and nursing friend of Cate's, arrives in the ED. She's well travelled, likeable and a livewire and adds some colour to the day. Cate is pleased to see her and by the day's end Jo's here to stay, for a while at least. Frank returns to work just as unexpectedly as when he disappeared. It's an unusually cheerful Frank and his coworkers start to suspect that he plans on leaving the ED. When he insists that the team head off to Cougars Bar at shift's end, he makes them even more suspicious. An affair goes very wrong when a woman is injured in a backyard spa accident, forcing Dan to reconsider his tryst with Bianca.

Happy Returns

A plane crash sees the arrival of several critically injured victims to All Saints. Vincent, just back from Canada, arrives with two of the incoming - Amy & Mark Miller, newlyweds, who have been fused together in the fire after the crash. Given Vincent's history of losing Grace in a plane crash, everyone is concerned about how he'll deal with this. And tensions mount in resus when Vincent appears to be making life-threatening decisions. During the difficult task of trying to save the young newlywed's life we discover a new, gentler, and far more flexible Vincent. Sean is desperate to somehow be more actively involved in the operation on his niece but there's no way Spence is going to let him be present at the operation. Pressured by his sister, Sean questions Spence's decisions in the operating theatre. Zoe and Von work on an old man, Ted, who has been separated from his wife after the plane crash. Frank and Erica have to deal with the pilot of the plane who is suffering some peculiar injuries and a bad case of survivor guilt.

Dead Girl Walking

When a young woman, Paulie, is brought into the ED, Von, Frank and Cate are astounded to be told by the Ambos she believes herself already dead. Spence and Sean's relationship reaches boiling point when it looks as though Molly may be permanently paralysed. Vincent has most of the ED waiting for him to explode at Spence after discovering Charlotte and Spence are expecting a baby. Jack finds himself operating solo when anaesthetist and friend, John Cotter, collapses mid-operation. Cate receives some chilling insights from Paulie, the 'dead girl'.

Dan joins the Medical Response Unit at the crash site of a bus carrying a junior rugby league team but his decision to ignore protocol lands him in hot water. Everyone is surprised when there is a teenage girl among the survivors. She presents with medical and personal problems that need to be unraveled and then treated. When an old patient of Von's returns with his wife who is refusing to speak, Bart makes a surprising breakthrough.

Where the Truth Lies

Erica's brother AJ arrives in hospital following a prison fight in which a guard is murdered, creating havoc in the ED. Erica is left questioning his involvement in the murder and the person he has turned into; but Dan discovers there's more going on than Erica's brother is prepared to tell her. Sean suspects foul play when a woman brings her desperately ill husband into the ED.

Jaws of Death

When a plumbing problem shuts down the operating theatres, Vincent and his team must attempt to save a young man's life in the Resus Bay, drawing the attention of the Infection Control Officer. Ben Macedo is haunted by the memory of his mate being taken by a shark and feels guilty he didn't do more to help. Lindsay Blake has an infection in her lower leg, attributed to a waxing mishap. Bart diagnoses Necrotising Fasciitis. It becomes a race against time to not only save Lindsay's leg but her life.

Episode 37

Love, Pain & the Whole Damn Thing

It's the busiest night of the year in the ED. The stress this causes has differing effects on all the staff. A sleep deprived Cate accidentally administers an overdose of a medication to a patient. Bart takes the blame and is given a dressing down by Frank. Max, a Psych Patient, terrorizes the ED and Erica in particular. Gabrielle falls victim to the flu and has to go home. Dan takes over and becomes 'Supernurse'. Moral and ethical considerations come into play when the victim of a hit and run must be declared brain dead and her husband is asked by Frank and Von to consider donating her organs.

Episode 38

Breaking Point

A man is brought into the ED with appalling injuries suffered after apparently falling 20 metres on a building site. Frank and the surgical team work hard to keep him alive and are spurred on when the man's wife and child come in to visit. But it's when his younger brother arrives that what actually happened becomes less clear. A triathlete on the cusp of national selection arrives in the ED with serious respiratory problems that suggest asthma, but finding the real cause is a slow and fraught task. Michaeley doesn't have time to be sick, and certainly not to sit around waiting for tests to be done and results to surface. Zoe and Cate will have a struggle to uncover what's really wrong with Michaeley and an even harder time convincing her to accept treatment. Sean struggles to deal with an aggressive drunk and the inappropriate behaviour of Jo. Sadly, Cate ends up caught in the middle and ends up in an embarrassing situation with Vincent.

Episode 39

Love and Hate

Casey Taylor, dying of Muscular Dystrophy, returns to the ED, his condition having deteriorated badly since he last visited All Saints. His father, Paul, is still refusing to accept that the end is near for his son. Frank is faced with the difficult task of trying to convince Paul that he should give his son permission to die. Vincent returns from an MRU call out with a distraught man who, somehow, managed to get his leg caught in the conveyor belt mechanism of an automatic car wash. Sean is not impressed with Cate's behaviour of late but instead of his words getting through to her, they result in Cate heading off with Jo - perhaps for another night of debauchery. Zoe draws on a secret from her past to solve a medical mystery. Jack sits his surgeon's examination.

Episode 40

Judgement Day

It's a black day for the team as Cate is brought in after a drug overdose; Erica's brother AJ escapes during a prison van MVA and disturbed Paul Taylor, who has a grudge against Frank, brings a gun into the ED with disastrous results. Meanwhile, Zoe and Gabrielle treat Kyle Jackson who is admitted to the ED with bruising all over his body. They suspect his mother Louisa of abusing him but all is not what it seems.
