Meanwhile, still reeling from the moment a bottle of whiskey rolled out of his bag in front of a disbelieving Frank, Nelson is far from impressed when Frank confronts him with accusations over the difficult matter. Before long, a heated argument has erupted between the pair in the middle of the emergency department.

But it's safe to say that Frank and Von receive anything-but-friendly receptions from Nelson, who is still outraged that his colleagues wrongly assumed he had begun drinking again. Deanna shows a side to her that Jack has not seen before.

Something he fails to do as he collapses with a heart attack, revealing more of his personal life than he would like. Newly certified as a Nurse Practitioner, Nelson struggles to diagnose the mystery pain of his first patient, Melanie Sonter. Jack is drawn deeper into his relationship with Deanna as she clings desperately to her place at All Saints in the face of mounting hostility. But it isn't Deanna who finds she can no longer take it.

But while those who worked alongside Deanna are thrilled to see the back of her, one person is left reeling - the man who fell deeply for her, Dr Jack Quade. Earlier, recovering alcoholic Nelson discovers it was Deanna who placed a bottle of whisky in his locker as a way to force him out of his job so she could take his place in the ED permanently. Nelson reacts quickly and angrily. Sean and Charlotte are forced to take unpopular action to save an Ambo's crushed leg. Frank, recovering from his heart attack, proves to be anything but a model patient.

Von and Nelson face their demons when a letter with devastating news arrives for Nelson. Now that Deanna has handed in her resignation, her ex-lover, Jack, gathers his courage to face up to Frank.

He eventually got in over his head and now finds himself in hospital suffering from organ damage. Nelson's mounting errors at work are trying Frank's patience which in turn pushes Nelson further towards the breaking point. Dan offers a room to Jack who has found himself homeless after the fire.

Between irritating Frank by his mere presence, saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and stumbling through his assignments, Bart finds reason to question his ability but an encouraging word goes a long way to ease his mind. A pair of perplexing patients resulting from a fight at a house party give the staff cause for concern when their symptoms don't coincide with the doctors' expectations for their respective injuries. Jack trusts his gut feeling and forces his superiors to take notice while Bart has his hands full coping with a sudden emergency he may be the cause of. Frank is stunned when Nelson turns up on his doorstep in the middle of the night, looking far from himself. Dazed and with nasty wounds on his bare feet, Nelson is clearly in a bad way. What's more, by night's end he will have made a heartbreaking decision. But it's a decision he knows he has to make-and one that Frank helps him to carry out. Nelson, who is still failing to cope with the horrific murder of his bride-to-be, Kerry, pleads with Frank to admit him to a psychiatric ward.

The staff change room is robbed and Jack assists Mike Vlasik in a challenging surgical procedure.

Ignoring medical advise, they are desperate to get on their way as soon as possible, but when x-rays reveal the truth about their situation, an armed stand-off ensues in the ED with Von caught in the middle. A young mother, the victim of a bag snatch, is dragged along behind a car but refuses to undergo critical surgery until her missing baby is found. Kate's defense of the mother's right to choose puts her into conflict with Mike who wants the decision taken out of her hands. Frank takes a "sickie" and feels the dirt beneath his feet for the first time in ages, much to the relief of Dan. Charlotte is surprised by Doug Spencer's unexpected return and although it is brief, he leaves a lasting impression on young Bart. Dan's days as NUM are numbered, much to his relief.

Sean suspects his lifestyle as a DJ may be the cause but the man is adamant he's done nothing to jeopardise his new liver. Mike gives a very hungover Jack the lead at the operating table for the first time. Jack tries to back out but Mike's ultimatum forces Jack into the OR where his impaired ability complicates an already difficult procedure. A queasy Frank has to deal with a particularly nasty throat abscess and the arrival of Gabrielle Jaeger, the new Nursing Unit Manager.

Jack attempts to play mediator and gets caught in the crossfire. Eve's agent is planning a grand European tour for her. Frank clearly isn't keen on the idea but will he ask Eve not to go? Bart returns looking to find a job in the ED while Von receives word she's been made the department's new Transitional Care nurse.

Erica and Zoe Gallagher (an old friend of Frank's) deal with a girl that presents with a broken arm but is not all she seems to be. The girl's mother is adamant that Dr Gallagher not treat her daughter further for fear of her extraordinary genetic condition being revealed. Frank has a special delivery to make for Dennis Pool & his partner Jacqueline and he has a last minute change of heart about letting Eve go to Europe.

When attempts to resuscitate an MVA victim fail, the team puts his cause of death down to injuries sustained in the accident. But they soon realise the victim was dead before he got in the car and find themselves dealing with a murder mystery and a murderer. A man with a hook stuck inside his penis claims he was involved in a freak fishing accident but his story seems a little far fetched. But eventually the truth comes out - along with the hook.

Frank makes a surprise trip to Paris to convince Eve to marry him but she's too busy flirting with a svelte Frenchman. Sean is shocked when a family member is admitted for treatment.

Spence presents Sean and his sister, Jenna, with some unsavoury treatment options for Sean's young niece, putting Spence and Sean at odds with each other. Deciding what to do would be challenging under any circumstances but the family harbours a secret that weighs even more heavily on their choice. Jo, an old university and nursing friend of Cate's, arrives in the ED. She's well travelled, likeable and a livewire and adds some colour to the day. Cate is pleased to see her and by the day's end Jo's here to stay, for a while at least. Frank returns to work just as unexpectedly as when he disappeared. It's an unusually cheerful Frank and his coworkers start to suspect that he plans on leaving the ED. When he insists that the team head off to Cougars Bar at shift's end, he makes them even more suspicious. An affair goes very wrong when a woman is injured in a backyard spa accident, forcing Dan to reconsider his tryst with Bianca.

A plane crash sees the arrival of several critically injured victims to All Saints. Vincent, just back from Canada, arrives with two of the incoming - Amy & Mark Miller, newlyweds, who have been fused together in the fire after the crash. Given Vincent's history of losing Grace in a plane crash, everyone is concerned about how he'll deal with this. And tensions mount in resus when Vincent appears to be making life-threatening decisions. During the difficult task of trying to save the young newlywed's life we discover a new, gentler, and far more flexible Vincent. Sean is desperate to somehow be more actively involved in the operation on his niece but there's no way Spence is going to let him be present at the operation. Pressured by his sister, Sean questions Spence's decisions in the operating theatre. Zoe and Von work on an old man, Ted, who has been separated from his wife after the plane crash. Frank and Erica have to deal with the pilot of the plane who is suffering some peculiar injuries and a bad case of survivor guilt.

Dan takes over and becomes 'Supernurse'. Moral and ethical considerations come into play when the victim of a hit and run must be declared brain dead and her husband is asked by Frank and Von to consider donating her organs.

A man is brought into the ED with appalling injuries suffered after apparently falling 20 metres on a building site. Frank and the surgical team work hard to keep him alive and are spurred on when the man's wife and child come in to visit. But it's when his younger brother arrives that what actually happened becomes less clear. A triathlete on the cusp of national selection arrives in the ED with serious respiratory problems that suggest asthma, but finding the real cause is a slow and fraught task. Michaeley doesn't have time to be sick, and certainly not to sit around waiting for tests to be done and results to surface. Zoe and Cate will have a struggle to uncover what's really wrong with Michaeley and an even harder time convincing her to accept treatment. Sean struggles to deal with an aggressive drunk and the inappropriate behaviour of Jo. Sadly, Cate ends up caught in the middle and ends up in an embarrassing situation with Vincent.

His father, Paul, is still refusing to accept that the end is near for his son. Frank is faced with the difficult task of trying to convince Paul that he should give his son permission to die. Vincent returns from an MRU call out with a distraught man who, somehow, managed to get his leg caught in the conveyor belt mechanism of an automatic car wash. Sean is not impressed with Cate's behaviour of late but instead of his words getting through to her, they result in Cate heading off with Jo - perhaps for another night of debauchery. Zoe draws on a secret from her past to solve a medical mystery. Jack sits his surgeon's examination.
