Mrs. Rafferty suggests Phil and Tara get married next week. Ruth and Kate note that neither Phil nor Tara has phoned to say they're all right. Phil explains why he and Tara have to marry today, but Mrs. Rafferty says there's nothing she can do to help them. Ruth and Kate discuss mothers worrying about their grown children. Ruth feels guilty for worrying about adult Philip, then Kate confesses she's concerned about Paul's growing interest in Anne. Tara wants to try to get to another justice of the peace, but Phil rejects the idea. They could get stuck and have to call for help which might lead to Chuck finding out about their reconciliation. Tara realizes he's right, though she can't think of anything but becoming Phil's wife. An intuitive Kate tells Paul that she thinks something else is going on with Philip besides a visit to an old friend. En route back to Pine Valley, Tara spots a small church and makes Phil stop. She's certain the chapel is a sign just for them. Joe notices Ruth's subdued behavior. She admits she has an uncanny feeling that something is happening with Philip. Unable to find anyone and with no adjoining parsonage, Phil speculates they're in a wayside chapel for travelers with no minister. Tara replies that it's still a church. God's house. And she wants them to marry one another right now in His presence.

Tara reminds Philip there is no other way for them to be married unless they exchange their own vows alone in the chapel before God. And she wants that more than anything in the world. Ruth comments to Joe it's a good thing Tara and Phil are longer in love as Tara would be just as upset as she is over his being sent to active duty. After Tara convinces him that they'll be married in their own eyes and God's, Phil takes her hand. They light candles and stand before the altar as they begin to recite their wedding vows to one another. In Pine Valley, Chuck watches the snow fall outside his hospital window. He thinks happily of the summer when Tara told him that she loves him and is completely over Phil. Mary interrupts his reverie to check on him now that her shift is over. They talk about the fears he once had that Tara only turned to him on the rebound from Philip, but now he's certain she loves him. Meanwhile, Philip recites his vows to Tara in the wayside chapel. Mary joins Jeff in the hospital cafeteria, and they talk about Phil having to leave on Monday. At the chapel, Phil and Tara complete the ceremony and vow to one another and to God that they are husband and wife. Paul comes down for a nightcap and tells Joe about his evening with the Tylers. Joe is mystified how Nick and Anne's marriage could have soured so quickly and wonders if their separation is permanent. Paul says it is. Anne has asked him to continue divorce proceedings. Philip telephones the Martin house and puts a worried Ruth at ease. Afterward, he apologizes for not giving Tara a nicer honeymoon, but to her it doesn't matter. They're together and married, and they will love one another for however much time they they have left together.

Anxious in Charles' office, Mary tries to get Jeff to forget her having a routine physical, but he insists because of her dizzy spell at breakfast. On their way home from vacationing in the mountains, Ruth apologizes to Joe for overreacting and thinking he was unfair to Philip. Joe reciprocates by admitting he's wrong to automatically put Tara's best interests before others. Mary explains to Charles that she has been feeling a little run down and fatigued, though she shrugs it off. Phoebe is relieved when Juanita Ramsey agrees to take over Charles' ticket and join her on the world cruise. Anne warns her mother she's letting things get out of hand; however, Phoebe persists with the idea that Charles no longer loves her and doesn't care about her feelings. Jeff confides in Frank his worries regarding Mary's health. Mary interrupts them after her physical which showed nothing abnormal. Jeff asks about the lab tests, but the results aren't back yet. Anne dismisses Phoebe's contention that Charles is in love with his secretary Mona Kane, and when Phoebe argues otherwise, Anne encourages her to stay and fight for her marriage. While she enjoys iced tea with Kate on the Martin porch, Mary remarks on her good luck in life; she doesn't have a complaint in the world. Meanwhile, Charles contacts the hospital lab for Mary's test results. Ruth and Joe arrive home, but Ruth's joy is quickly dampened after Kate breaks the news that Philip has gone to New York to stop Erica from aborting the child he fathered. Charles gives Jeff the results of Mary's blood tests which indicate anemia. He reminds Jeff the cause could be something as simple as an iron deficiency. Jeff gravely replies that it could also be something else.

Mark confides in Erica that Brooke thinks Eddie wants to kill him. Freddie realizes that Eddie is dead and spots his gun nearby. He races out to find Linc. Paul arrives back at the Martin home and catches up on Ruth's pregnancy. Joe shares that Ruth had an amniocentesis, but they won't receive the results until tomorrow, and Ruth wants the baby even if it's diagnosed with Down's Syndrome. Paul admits he's still torn between Ellen and Anne, but they're in limbo. He worries about Mark, who also loves Ellen and reminds her of it. Mark refuses Erica's suggestion that he phone the police about Eddie, and Erica blames Brooke for the mess. Linc checks Eddie's pulse and confirms he's dead. Freddie says he fell asleep at the bar and only woke up when Myrtle told him Kelly had been found, so he couldn't have heard a gunshot. Joe tries to make Paul see that Mark isn't a threat because Ellen didn't want him and broke off her engagement with him. Ellen helps Devon prepare to leave for St. Louis with Wally. Devon asks her mother if she doesn't really still love Mark but chooses Paul because he's safer. Lt. Tolliver questions Freddie who identifies the murder weapon as Eddie's gun which had been stolen earlier that night. Linc tells Tolliver about Kelly leaving suddenly during her set, and Tolliver quickly realizes that Linc isn't giving the full details. Brooke arrives home at the Tyler mansion and finds out Phoebe left earlier. Then Phoebe returns, too. Brooke notes she's missing an earring. Panicked, Phoebe goes to the car to search for it. Brooke knows she's lying about going to the drugstore for a bottle of aspirin. A police detective finds Phoebe's earring in Eddie's office. Linc identifies it for Lt. Tolliver. Mark stops by Ellen's to say goodbye to Devon. Afterward, he asks Ellen to join him at The Chateau for Kelly's last act. Lt. Tolliver warns Linc not to speak to anyone about the case and since they're material witnesses, he and Kelly are forbidden from leaving Pine Valley. Paul drops by Ellen's as she turns down Mark's invitation. Paul admits he's jealous of Mark and promises Ellen if she's patient they'll one day be together. The following morning Brooke and Phoebe react to a radio news bulletin announcing Eddie's murder. Brooke asks Phoebe where she really went last night when she claimed to be buying aspirin. Phoebe counters by asking Brooke to account for her whereabouts during the same time. Brooke claims she waited for Mark at his apartment then came home late. Lt. Tolliver pays an official visit to the Tyler mansion and asks Phoebe how her earring came to be found in Eddie's office the night he was murdered.

Erica and Tom react to an article about Eddie's death in The Banner. Erica's glee over Eddie's death shocks Tom, who believes it was likely a robbery gone wrong. But Erica insists Eddie was a nasty man hated by everyone, and she tells him the story of Eddie threatening to kill Mark over Brooke. Furthermore, Erica thinks Brooke was involved in Eddie's killing. Brooke reads the same newspaper article, recalls Eddie's vow to murder Mark, and shudders. Claudette coldly informs Freddie that's she's taking cover Eddie's job as manager of The Chateau, and they will not show any deference to Eddie by closing the restaurant. Lt. Tolliver presses an evasive Phoebe to explain how her earring came to be found by Eddie's body. When she can't lie her way out of it, Phoebe finally admits she went back to The Chateau late, after Langley took her home. She had business with him that she would prefer to keep private. Myrtle checks in on Kelly who's in sleeping restlessly. Myrtle recalls Kelly's drug induced scene at The Chateau and Eddie's threat to kill her. Myrtle phones Linc, saying she needs to see him immediately about Kelly. Under Tolliver direct questioning, Phoebe is forced to admit she was being blackmailed by Eddie over her affair with Langley, and she had gone back to The Chateau to tell him she wouldn't pay his blackmail money. When Tolliver questions her about knowledge of Eddie's gun, Phoebe denies knowing anything, but she slips up by mentioning it being kept in the back of a drawer. Tom defends Brooke to Erica and can't believe how ghoulish she's being about details of the murder. Erica retorts that she knows angles the dumb Pine Valley police would never think of. She decides to investigate the crime on her own. Myrtle shares her fears about Kelly with Linc. She explains to him how Kelly can't recall anything after she ran out of The Chateau. She was missing and can't account for what she did during the very hour of Eddie's murder. Myrtle worries that under the influence of speed, Kelly could have done anything. Tom doesn't want Erica interfering in the murder investigation, so she tells him she'll stay out, but she secretly plans to go and confront someone who can tell her more about the crime. After finishing with Phoebe, who runs upstairs in tears, Tolliver turns his attention to Brooke. He asks about her relationship with Eddie. She lies and says there was none. Later Tolliver goes to see Claudette. She tells him she left The Chateau before Freddie, getting home about 11 in time to see the start of Now Voyager on the late movie. She admits that Eddie stole her job from her, but swears she wouldn't kill him because she knew he was embezzling and would fall on his own. Tolliver asks her if Eddie had a lover, and Claudette gives him Brooke's name. When asks about enemies, Claudette offers Kelly's name, adding that she's a drug addict who Eddie got hooked. Linc refuses to believe Kelly could have killed Eddie, even if she was high on drugs. Myrtle counters that he doesn't know how Kelly confuses reality and dreams during an overdose. She also worries what will happen when Kelly learns of Eddie's death. They agree to wait to tell Kelly about it, and the news must come from them to avoid upsetting her. At Myrtle's, the ringing doorbell arouses Kelly from her stupor. She drags herself to the front door and opens it to an excited Erica. Erica barges her way in, asking for information. Kelly misinterprets the situation, thinking Erica is there to mock her for her outburst onstage last night. Erica stuns her to the core with news of Eddie being found shot to death.

Having a drink at The Goalpost, Cliff confides in Brooke his fears for Nina's health after she has another hypoglycemic episode. Brooke offers to check on Nina since Palmer won't let Cliff see or talk to her. Palmer attempts to sabotage Cliff at the hospital by suggesting that as Chief of Staff Charles should fire Cliff for gathering an illegitimate child in Chicago. Tom rejects Erica, accusing of her of attempting to seduce him when she presses him to attend the reopening of The Steampit disco with her. Paul shares with Joe and Ruth his dilemma: should he divorce Anne and marry Ellen or remain with Anne and hope she someday recovers. Ellen picks up Devon and Bonnie at the airport. Devon becomes overly defensive when Ellen suggests she should have told Wally that she was suddenly flying to Pine Valley for a visit. Myra returns from Center City and informs Palmer that she found Mr. Rab there and now knows that Palmer paid Rab and Janice Rawlins to discredit Cliff. Just as she swears she's going to stop him from ruining Nina's life, Nina walks in the room. Wally phones for Devon, but Devon won't take his call, and Ellen breaks it to him that Devon won't see him unless he comes to Pine Valley in person. Erica is furious when Brooke throws it in her face that she knows Erica and Tom are divorcing because Erica lied to Tom about not taking birth pills. Myra keeps quiet about what she knows but reminds Palmer that they will continue their conversation later. After Erica accuses Tom of telling Brooke the reason behind their separation, he denies it and suggests that Mark told Brooke, but Erica won't believe her brother betrayed her. Ellen explains to Devon why she and Paul feel even more conflicted about their marriage since Anne was deemed mentally incompetent and might not ever recover. Paul dreams of happier times with Anne when they were first married. A morose Cliff theorizes to Brooke that he should just accept he's lost Nina for good. Myra warns Palmer that either he find a way to undo all the damage he's done between Cliff and Nina or she's going to tell her tomorrow that Palmer paid Janice Rawlins to lie about having Cliff's child.
