Season 1 of this drama follows Sarah Adams (Marta Dusseldorp) as she returns to Australia after a 20-year absence to heal from the atrocities of World War II and to mend fences with her estranged mother. Along the way, her life becomes forever entwined with the Blighs, a wealthy pastoralist family with a dark secret. She quickly forms a bond with widower George Bligh (Brett Climo), much to the chagrin of his mother, family matriarch Elizabeth Bligh (Noni Hazlehurst), who is very protective of her clan and will stop at nothing to preserve its position, wealth and traditions.
