It comes to light shortly after their arrival that many guests over the holidays received their prepaid stay at the inn not from whom they thought, but from the same unknown person for an equally-unknown reason, none has any known connection to any of the others. Recently-widowed musician Jasper thought it was a gift from his wife for what was supposed to be their final Christmas together. Recently-divorced third-grade teacher Karen thought that she had won the vacation in a sweepstakes, timely as this is her first Christmas without her husband, with whose family she would have spent the holidays. Los Angeles-based Owen believed the vacation was a gift from his brother, who would have known that he was looking for something special to do with his teenage daughter Cassidy; he shares custody of her with his ex-wife. But the most inquisitive of the recipients is Seattle-based lawyer Sarah, who believed the vacation was a gift from her company, who knew she needed some time for herself as she had taken family leave to deal with her recently-deceased lawyer mother's estate in Brooklyn, which included completing her few unfinished cases. As Sarah, with Ben's help, seeks to discover who sent the gifts, all of the recipients might believe the gifts were fate - especially Sarah and Ben, who start to fall for each other in their time of need - regardless of the gift-giver's original intention.

Rita, in turn, throws Mindy for a loop in announcing that in bringing her girlfriend, Emily (Matreya Scarrwener), home for the celebrations, Emily who Mindy has always loved, she is planning on proposing, in their youth Mindy fearing a fate for Rita and Emily such as what happened to her and Marc. But as Mindy tries to find herself at this stage of her life, she is further affected by Rita's additional plans to travel for a year with Emily to experience life, by the return of Marc following his breakup, he hiding the fact that he is hoping to reconcile, and by the reunion with her first love, high school sweetheart Sam Berman (James Tupper), who happens to be Emily's uncle. That reunion is not without its own issues as while only knowing it was a breakup leading to some animosity between the two of them despite each seeming to love the other, Mindy and Sam have differing views of their split, Mindy seeing Sam as the one who initiated it, while Sam, who has spent his entire life trying to find himself, states that it at that time was inevitable in he not fitting into that stable, controlled life plan of hers.
