The one person he does know from before their time in Fort Simmer, Darcy McManus, bullies him, with Larry refusing to fight back. They were once friends, but one specific incident in their past led to why Darcy now taunts him. Darcy is also the one person among their peers that knows the reason for Larry and Verna having moved to Fort Simmer, that being the accident. One thing that keeps Larry preoccupied is his infatuation with classmate, Juliet Hope. Things have the potential to change for Larry when he is befriended by a new classmate, Johnny Beck, a tough guy who may be able to guide Larry in some key areas, especially in dealing with others. One potential area of conflict between the two is Juliet's attraction to Johnny. Their friendship may also open Larry up to greater scrutiny, his past which he may want kept below the surface. As Larry tries to navigate all these issues, he also tries to reconcile his current life with his First Nations background, Jed who often tries to provide that First Nations touchstone.

Victoria was forced to break-up with the only man she ever loved because he was black, that relationship which produced a son, Jason. And lesbian Meimei and her partner Dede want to have a baby, and are looking for a sperm donor. Mrs. Xiao's last wish was for her family to come together to hold a traditional week long Chinese funeral for her. Being brought up "western" (with a couple of them not even knowing their native tongue), the siblings must rely on the Xiao's longtime housekeeper and caregiver, a Jewish woman named Viola, to tell them how to proceed with the funeral. As the week progresses, the siblings learn of many things not previously known about their mother and their family in general, some of it having to do with another funeral attendee from Beijing, a man named Chow Lin. But the biggest secret of the the family is kept by Viola, who reveals all, with some help by the spirit of Mrs. Xiao, by week's end.

Sandra Bya, married with two children, has been off work from her job at Solwal on medical leave for depression. During her absence from work, her boss, M. Dumont, on the suggestion of her immediate supervisor, the shop foreman Jean-Marc, figures that her section of the company can function with sixteen people working full time with a bit of overtime instead of seventeen with no overtime, that seventeenth person being Sandra. Because of the global competition the company faces, Dumont decides the company can only finance the annual bonuses for those sixteen employees, which are EUR1,000 per person, or Sandra's job, leaving the decision to those sixteen. On a Friday near the end of her medical leave, Sandra learns of this situation from her friend and co-worker Juliette after the "show of hands" vote is held, the result a 14-2 decision for the bonuses over Sandra's job. Because Juliette knows Jean-Marc, who is determined to get rid of Sandra, influenced the vote by scare mongering through misinformation, Juliette and Sandra, at the end of the working day on Friday, are able to convince Dumont to hold another secret ballot on Monday morning, with Sandra needing a majority to keep her job, meaning nine votes. By Saturday morning, Sandra's supportive husband, Manu, convinces her that over the weekend she should speak to each and all of the fourteen who voted for the bonuses to get them to change their minds. The Byas not only need the income from Sandra's job but Manu believes the job is a symbol for Sandra of her own self-worth, important now in her tenuous mental state. As Sandra reluctantly goes about this task, she finds that not only is she uncomfortable being in this somewhat confrontational situation, but that the people who voted against her have their own household conflicts over the EUR1,000, which would keep some of them afloat financially. As the weekend progresses, Sandra will find if she is strong enough emotionally to deal with the situation.

A valuable painting belonging to Duchess Blanca (Alida Valli) is stolen at night from her castle in Spain by one of her house-guests, Jimmy Bourne (Rex Harrison), who replaces the original work with a duplicate. The debonair gentleman thief then passes the painting to his partner in crime, Eve Lewis (Rita Hayworth). However, the artwork is subsequently stolen from them by a man acting on behalf of Dr. Victor Muñoz (Grégoire Aslan), the cousin of the duchess. Eve wants to go straight, but Victor blackmails her and Jim, demanding that they steal a renowned painting (The Second of May 1808) by Francisco de Goya from the Prado Museum in Madrid. An exact copy of the painting is created by artist Jean Marie Calbert (Joseph Wiseman), and a switch is planned to take place during the farewell bullfight of a famous matador, Cayetano (Virgilio Teixeira), whom the duchess intends to wed. During the bullfight, Victor secretly shoots Cayetano in order to create a diversion that will assist the art theft. News of the matador's death spreads quickly across the city and distracts the guards at the Prado Museum, allowing Jim and Jean to begin switching the two large paintings. Jean suddenly leaves the room before they are finished, but Eve arrives in time to help Jim complete the switch before the guards return. Later, Jean turns up and goes with Jim to the house of Victor, where they find him dead. They are then framed for this murder by the duchess, who had killed Victor to avenge the death of Cayetano. Using the stolen Goya painting as a bargaining chip, Jim negotiates with the authorities, and he secures freedom for Jean and a reduced prison sentence for himself. Eve vows to wait for him.

When he learns that his grandmother is going to have to sell her ranch to pay off the debts, he trains Red, with the help of Andy McBride, as a race horse with the intention of selling his beloved animal friend in order to pay off his grandmother's debts.

Paula moves into Cormack's house and discovers he has two teen-aged children who consider her a gold-digger after their father's fortune. Meanwhile, Clarice's husband refuses to have their marriage annulled and tries to blackmail Paula into giving him to $10,000 for his silence.
