Woman of Straw

2 hrs 2 mins

Extremely wealthy and powerful Charles Richmond usually gets what he wants, and if he doesn't, he prevents others from getting it. Condescending, he seems to relish other people's pain. He treats everyone horribly, especially two of his black servants, brothers Thomas and Fenton who he treats literally worse than dogs. Beyond these issues, his nephew Tony Richmond, his closest living relative who works for the family company and acts as his personal secretary of sorts, hates him because of how he treated both his now deceased parents, Charles who he blames for the death of Tony's father, his own brother. Further, Charles has just revised his will following a terminal illness diagnosis which may kill him tomorrow or several years down the road and which has left him wheelchair-bound, he leaving Tony with a pittance with most of the money going to charity more as a matter of spite. Requiring a constant nurse, Charles sees her physical attractiveness a necessary attribute more than her capabilities as a health care provider. Vetted by him, Tony sees Charles' latest nurse, Maria Marcello, as the perfect person for his plan: to become the next Mrs. Charles Richmond so that he will revise his will leaving all his money to her, Tony and Maria to split the inheritance. While the two of them embark on a secret relationship on the side, Tony figures Maria cannot cut him out of the plan as he is the one who will manipulate the situation for Charles to want to marry her. While Maria realizes that this plan may be for the long haul and that putting up with Charles' abusive behavior will be something difficult to tolerate, the nature of the plan may turn on a dime as is often the case in matters of wealth versus poverty, of right versus wrong, of love versus hate, and of life versus the possibility of imminent death.

There has been a rash of child abductions and murders in Berlin. The murderer lures the children into his confidence by candy and other child-friendly items. Everyone is on edge because the murderer has not been caught. The most substantial pieces of evidence the police have are hand-written letters by the murderer which he sent to the newspaper for publication. Unknown even to himself, a blind beggar, who sold the murderer a balloon for one of the child victims, might have key information about the murderer's identity. The murder squad's work is made even more difficult with the large number of tips they receive from the paranoid public, who are quick to accuse anyone of suspicious activity solely for their own peace of mind that someone--anyone--is apprehended for the heinous crimes. Conversely, many want to take the case into their own hands, including the town's leading criminals, since the increased police presence has placed a strain on their ability to conduct criminal activity. Although they both have the same end goal of capturing the murderer, the police and the criminals seem to be working at cross-purposes, which could provide an edge to the murderer in escaping.

She is a red-baiter, accusing anyone who disagrees with her right-wing reactionary views of being a Communist. Raymond hates her, not only for how she's treated him, but equally because of his stepfather, ineffectual U.S. Senator John Iselin (James Gregory), who is intent on seeking higher office. Victor Florescu is a talented, Brussels-based composer of serious music under the tutelage of respected Professor Bertier at the Music Conservatory. He is hoping to have his yet-uncompleted operetta, "The Cat and the Fiddle", produced by famed impresario Jules Daudet. Victor's focus in life changes when he meets Shirley Sheridan, a New Yorker just arrived in Brussels who moves into the pensione next to his own. He falls in love at first sight with her. She is also a composer--of the type of music more often heard in Tin Pan Alley--and is hoping to study with Professor Bertier. But it is Victor who helps her with her music. She also catches the attention of Daudet, who publishes her music although he is more interested in her as a woman. Regardless, she becomes rich and famous, and is required to move to Paris. In the short term, Victor, who moves to Paris with her, is more than willing to forgo his own musical aspirations to help her. But Victor is forced to choose between completing his operetta and being with Shirley, which may be all the more difficult a decision with Daudet waiting in the wings to be the one and only man in Shirley's life.
