1899, North Carolina. A hunter having lived among the Indians, Jim Shaw has just passed away. Ned decides it's time to tell her about and introduce her to at least one of those blood relations, Jim's older brother John Shaw who lives not too far away with the brothers having been estranged for Mandie's entire life. Upon Mandie's arrival at Shaw Mansion, the mansion staff, Jason Bond, the manor's caretaker and administrator, Liza, and her Aunt Lou, know exactly who she is and welcome her with open arms. Her arrival also coincides with news that John has presumably just perished at sea. That news travels fast as a plethora of presumed shysters posing as John's relations come for what they consider their share of John's vast estate. Jason assumes that John would have left everything to Jim and Mandie as his closest known blood relatives. The problem is is that Jason does not know where John would have left his will. While Jason, Liza and Aunt Lou humor their new shyster guests, Jason sends Mandie, Joe and their new friend Polly Cornwallis clandestinely to search the mansion with its many secret nooks and crannies for John's will to settle the matter of his estate definitively once and for all.

FIGURES OF SPEECH follows four duo teams from four different states over the course of one year, culminating at the National Speech and Debate tournament in Las Vegas. The teams represent a cross-section of American high school students. We travel with them to tournaments, to school and into their homes. We're with the teams as they learn to work together creatively, physically and emotionally. The movie brings to life the experiential rush of live Speech performance and competition and also incorporates the drama of a coming-of-age story. Each team must grapple with their own challenges: parental pressure, academic stress, sexual identity, failure, success and falling in love.
