Slut in a Good Way
One tipsy evening, Charlotte, the recently heartbroken, Megan, the anti-love anarchist, and Aube, the shy romantic, stumble into the 'Toy Depot'. Charmed by the male employees, the girls fill out a job application and quickly become part of the 'Toy Depot' gang. Charlotte has found the guys to be particularly helpful in getting over her heartbreak, to say the least. But has she taken it too far? The film explores teenage girls' desires, the blurred lines between sex and friendship, and the unfair double standard imposed upon girls. It is a story of desire, self-censorship, and self-assertion.

Wild Ones on Wheels
This film essentially begins with a man by the name of "Duke Walker" (Sydney Mason) about to be released from prison after serving twelve years for a robbery. Since the money (about $250,000) was never found a number of people think that Duke hid it somewhere. To that effect, one particular group led by a man named "King Tut" (Edmund Tontini), decide to stakeout a diner where Duke's wife "Hazel" (Francine York) works on the assumption that it will be the first place Duke visits once he's release from prison. Hazel, in the meantime, has been having an affair with another young man named "Bill James" (Robert Blair) who has also developed an interest in the money as well. Be that as it may, when Duke does show up, both he and Hazel are kidnapped by King Tut who soon demonstrates that he is willing to do whatever it takes to get his hand on the stolen loot. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this was an okay "hot rod film" in which the director (Rudolph Cusumano) managed to take good advantage of the desert setting to minimize the overall costs of production. Likewise, although the acting wasn't great, it was equally sufficient for the task at hand as well with the best performances probably being turned in by Francine York and Robert Blair. Admittedly, this film is quite dated but for a grade-B film of this nature it wasn't too bad and I have rated it accordingly. Average.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh
Bhagat Singh was born in British India during the year 1908. As a child he witnessed numerous atrocities committed on fellow Indians by their British rulers, who came to trade under the guise of the East India Company, but ended up controlling most of the nation, and permitting tyrants such as General Dyer to massacre thousands of innocent men, women and children in Jallianwala Baug. As a child he was impressed by Mohandas K. Gandhi, especially his call to launch the non-cooperation movement, which led to thousands of people burning British-made clothing, giving up schools, and college studies, and government jobs - only to be let down by Gandhi himself when he called off the movement. Undaunted, Bhagat decided to be a revolutionary, starting with getting into petty fights, then as a grown-up joining the Hindustan Republic Association. When Lala Lajpat Rai was beaten to death by the police, Bhagat, along with Shivram Rajguru, Sukhdev, and others daringly carried out the assassination of a police officer named Saunders, which eventually led to Bhagat's arrest, where he was lodged in a cell, tortured and beaten mercilessly. His father, Kishan, paid Rs.60,000/- and bailed him out, so that he could get him to run a diary-farm and get married to a girl from Manavali. But being a revolutionary was in Bhagat's blood, and when the British proposed the Trade Disputes and Public Safety Bills, he would initiate the bombing in the Indian Parliament Building, along with Batukeshwar Dutt, be arrested, and tried in an open court. This is where Bhagat launched his much-publicized revolution, and became popular with the masses, especially the younger generation, laborers, and farmers, so much so that his popularity rivaled that of Gandhi himself. Even in prison, Bhagat made headline news when he and other prisoners undertook a 63 day fast unto death to improve the conditions of Indian freedom-fighter prisoners. Then the British re-opened the Saunders' murder case, which led to death sentences being imposed on Bhagat, Shivram, and Sukhdev. The entire nation rose up in protest, including the Congress party - with the ball being in Gandhi's court - for he was due to sign the Irwing Pact, and Indians hoped that he would use this as a bargaining chip to save the lives of the heroic trio. Will Gandhi rise up to the occasion and save the trio - so that they could pave the way for a modern and independent India, not just a country ruled by the British with a dominant status - an India free of communal hatred, injustice, corruption, and fundamentalism, or will Gandhi end up disappointing Bhagat all over again?

My Sister Maria
Maria Schell: a glamorous name, a dream career, a tragic fate. Her career represents a fascinating chapter in German and international film history with compelling episodes and encounters with famous artist colleagues. Memories of global successes become faint: DIE RATTEN (THE RATS), WEISSE NÄCHTE (WHITE NIGHTS), DIE BRÜDER KARAMASOW (THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV). And then later the all too familiar pattern: The difficulties when a star used to success is forced to find a new role, when offers fail to materialize and the public's interest wanes; how does that often sought euphemism go: «with her [...] things have been somewhat quieter recently». Then the breakdown in her private life, calls for help, alarm signals. «The first death»: that's what Maria Schell calls her act of desperation from 1991. MY SISTER MARIA is meant to take inspiration from his famous Oscar-nominated documentary film MARLENE. A remarkable portrait of Marlene Dietrich, who allowed him to interview her with audio tape recordings but no cameras, not even photos; a fascinating effort, to still manage to depict a portrait of the artist in pictures. Maximilian Schell will work with feature film elements as well as documentary material and archive footage that are woven together like a collage. An important narrative level in the film is Maria Schell's life today, her sensitivities, the sphere of her life as she has gotten older, rich with references and associative potential reaching back to her rich life as an artist. Life on the alpine pasture in Kärnten, the familial clan, the interaction with her brother Maximilian: these offer the material for narrative and conflict that makes MY SISTER MARIA such an engaging cinema documentary.
