To figure out whether the inmates of a psychiatric institution for Vietnam War veterans feign insanity or not, unorthodox psychiatrist Colonel Kane arrives at a converted castle in New England. And while struggling with his inner demons, the metaphysical enquiries of psychotic former astronaut Captain Cutshaw intrigue Kane, triggering a feverish recurring nightmare. But as Kane and Cutshaw engage in intense theological debates over evil and the existence of God, the troubled scientist finds himself at a dead-end. As a result, only a reckless plan can determine the root of the soldiers' complex mental breakdowns. However, can Colonel Kane provide proof of an afterlife?

Lee Umstetter is a lifer at San Quentin prison and a multiple suicide attempter. Eventually, another prisoner suggests reading to find something better to do with his time. Lee takes that advice and finds himself inspired from what he reads to write a play about life in prison. He has auditions and assembles a cast from his fellow inmates. The play proves popular and it catches the attention of a female reporter who writes about it, creating publicity that allows for a parole for him. Once out, he later reassembles his cast when they come out to do the play professionally. However, they learn that the demands of the life outside are difficult to cope with for the newly released and their play needs to be changed in major ways while they struggle to make it succeed.

Operating from Sharperville, an oil town on the American side of the border, they transport their human cargo in oil drums loaded on trucks. Border Patrolman Tom Sharper intercepts one of the trucks but is overpowered and left for dead. Carroll, having already been paid for the job and not wanting any evidence to walk around, get caught and lead back to him, backs the human-cargo trucks to the edge of a cliff and sends the drums crashing to the boulder far below. Judge Cookie Bullfincher and Border Patrolman Roy Rogers conduct a search for the missing Tom, but the crooks have gone back for him and find him in a state of amnesia. They rob the bank and pin it on Tom. It is now up to Roy to clear his friend and also put an end to Carroll's human-smuggling racket.

Dr. Cardwell takes care of her at his home and grows fond of the girl, named Jo. All of Big Bend is in a tizzy about Red Bastian, with many folks believing that Jo is his moll. Cardwell is blindfolded and brought to Bastian's hideout to check on his wound, but the doctor is able to deduce the location. Meanwhile, the G-men tracking the gang have traced the stolen hundred-dollar bill back to Dr. Cardwell. Cardwell is willing to meet up with the cops, but learns that Bastian has kidnapped Jo. Returning to Bastian's hideout the doctor convinces the gang to get vaccinated against a tainted water supply, injecting them instead with a sedative that will allow the feds to round up the gang while Cardwell and Jo escape to safety.
