Profiteer Alexander Stiles lays claim to a million acres of range in the Pecos River country, but a rancher named Claybor stands in his way as he has already claimed the water-rich location of Sweetwater as his own, and refuses Stiles' $1000 offer for his land. Led by the murderous Ash, the hired guns of Stiles kill Clayborn and his wife but their young son John survives and joins his grandfather in Austin. As the boy grows into a man he learns the use of a law book as well as a six gun, intending to use both to bring Stiles to justice. As lawyer John Clay, he travels to the Cottonwood headquarters of Stiles, self-proclaimed King of the Pecos, and meets Hank Matthews and Josh Billings, two cattlemen thrown into poverty through the crooked dealings of Stiles. John serves a summons for Stiles to appear in court but the circuit judge is too frightened to face the might of Stiles. John sends Hank to round up other impoverished cattlemen, and they provide the judge with an armed escort to Cottonwood. The judge upholds the ranchers' pleas for use of water and grass, and Stiles sees most of his ill-gotten gains turned over to public domain for proper filing. Stiles convinces newcomers Eli Jackson and his daughter Belle that John is trying to cheat the ranchers and file claims for himself. He also plans an ambush for those riding through the canyon to file claims and he sends Ash and his gunmen to the hills, instructing them to shoot anyone without the white arm bands he has supplied to his own riders. John discovers the plot and has the ranchers to also wear white arm bands, ensuring their safe passage. With their claim successfully filed the ranchers plan a cattle drive to Abilene where the railroad is promising $20 a head. Stiles steals whatever cattle he can and moves his outlaws to Sweetwater, where he hopes to extort money for use of the water there from the trail drivers. When the drive reaches Sweetwater, John confronts Stiles, revealing that he is the son of the murdered Clayborn's and that Sweetwater rightfully belongs to him. Following a siege by John and the ranchers, Stiles tries to escape by buckboard, but when the wagon tips over he is crushed by the safe containing money he has stolen from others. John pursues Ash into the rocks, offering him a chance to draw first and then ills him. John leaves his gun and his quest for revenge at the site and turns his mind to Belle and his law career.

An unusual film in that it was composed of new film footage tacked onto an original film produced by M. H. Hoffman Sr. and Jr.,and never released because of the collapse and merger of the Hoffman's Liberty Company into the newly-formed Republic operation in mid-1935, and consequently has two different sets of actors and production crew members. The "Hoffman" group was made up of director Arthur Rosson, writers Frank Gay (who also doubled as Associate Producer) and W. Scott Darling, cameraman Tom Galligan, editor Dan Milner, assistant director Milton Brown, noted animal trainer Jack Lindell(who also had a film role) and actors Frank Campeau, Wally Albright, Edward Peil Sr. and Morgan Brown. It was filmed in the vicinity of Fredonia, Arizona and this group in no way functioned as a 2nd unit. They were making their own film. The film went unreleased, and George A. Hirliman took it over for his Condor Productions unit at Grand National, and shot additional footage directed by Samuel Diege, with Jack Greenhalgh on camera, Carl Pierson editing, two songs from Lew Porter, and Arthur Hoerl and Paul Franklin writing additional dialogue for the "Hirliman" flash-back cast of Hobart Bosworth, Harry Harvey and his son Harry Harvey, Jr. The Hoffman group was in Arizona, where a group of ranchers in the area south of the Utah border and east of the Colorado River had appealed to the Department of the Interior for relief against the great herds of wild mustangs that roamed the range, already stripped of most vegetation by dust storms and drought. The U.S. government contractors, under the authority of the Taylor Grazing Bill, undertook the task of rounding up nearly 3000 wild mustangs using airplanes, mounted cowboys and bright reflectors. Frank Gay wrote a wild horse story built around this impending roundup involving a rancher's son(Wally Albright) and a crusty old-timer (Frank Campeau). Jack Lindell had work for his stable of trained horses, including "Rex", King of the Wild Horses (as "El Diablo",the villain horse) and "Sheik", the New Wonder Hose (as "Whitey", the hero horse), who are the only credited "names" on the posters and advertising.

Sandwiched in between the numerous musical numbers, the Gabby Whittaker and Madden rodeo's are competing for bookings. When Gabby gets a date in Albuquerque, Madden has his man destroy his equipment. Roy finds a broken rawhide rope at the scene and uses it to bring Madden to justice.

The Cattlemen's Association persuades cowboy Roy Rogers to investigate some cattle rustling. The rustling continues but Roy eventually finds the secret tunnel used by the rustlers and captures one of them. This identifies the Hardy ranch as the culprits but when Roy goes to the Hardy ranch to confront them, he soon finds himself alone in a gunfight against the entire gang.

Clumsy Raif Moyle returns to Cheshire for the wedding of his elder brother Tim to Saskia, their old school friend, who was something of a wild child in the past. To the mild consternation of Saskia's socially-conscious mother Alex, Raif proposes that, in addition to his duties as best man, he will make a video of events leading up to and including the wedding. This means he spends a lot of time with Saskia and begins to realize that, beneath the surface, the happy event may turn out to be less than happy for all concerned. Fortunately, a wedding does eventually take place with surprises all round.

Somewhere off the western coast of Ireland, lying almost buried in what may well be called the toughest stretch of ocean on the globe, are the tiny Aran Islands. To those islands two years ago went Robert Flaherty, the man who made "Nanook of the North," "Moana" and "Tabu," there to record via the motion picture the struggle for the necessities of life carried on by the hardy and wholly admirable inhabitants. The result should rank as an outstanding contribution to the screen, of this or any other year. It is not story that makes it so, for there is little of that, as such; nor is it performances, for the players are the natives of Aran. It is rather the manner in which a saga has been told, with few words but magnificent photography, with little elaboration, but with a fine sense of that combination of scenic and basic detail which goes to make up a complete story of a people, told in pictures in the short space of slightly more than one hour. As far as the exhibitor is concerned, it is a picture with which he can go to all the women's clubs, all the schools and all the local organizations of like character. To them he may promise something unusual, a film which rates on a par with the "Nanook" of several years ago. The exhibitor also may make full use of the known ability and previous work of Mr. Flaherty, and can embellish his lobby with scenic stills. There are just three persons of importance in the cast, "Tiger" King, the "man of Aran," Maggie Dirrane, as his wife, and Michael Oillane, as their son. They are all three natives, as are the boatmen, the other players. In recording with vivid detail and often with thrilling action, the lives of these three, the producer has in essence recounted the story of the lives of all the people on the Aran Islands, where independence is the most vital consideration in their lives, while the sea dominates them all. Highlighting the picture, in addition to the seascapes which the camera has recorded in superb fashion, are the scenes in which "Tiger" and his fellow fishermen go to sea in an open boat no larger than a dory, in mountainous seas, by day or night, and harpoon sharks. Of interest of another sort is the manner in which a small portion of the wholly rocky surface of the island is smoothed, overlaid with seaweed tortuously gathered, on which is strewn earth, accumulated little by little from the rocky crevices and carried on the back in baskets, for the potato "crop." The utter fearlessness of the small boy and his mother, not to mention the men, in their eternal struggle against the thunderous and dominating sea, imparts to the picture a basic appeal. It is a picture to the selling of which the exhibitor can apply every type of cooperative effort. No matter what the box office may return, the showing of the film appears worth its own weight in prestige for the theatre and for the newspaper support it is certain to receive in most communities.

During World War II, a young African American is forced to continue his family's tradition of military service when he is drafted into the United States Army.
