Desert Phantom
In a remake of 1932's "Night Rider", which was later adapted into 1940's "The Range Busters", Arizona cowhand Billy Donovan comes to a Texas town and gives sharp-shooting exhibitions in his guise as an ammunition salesman for the Gigantic Shell Company, but is in reality searching for the killer of his brother-in-law who also caused the death of his sister. Bill meets Jean Halloran, who has received several notes signed by "The Phantom" ordering her to vacate the Double Bar-A ranch near an abandoned gold mine. The only other occupant on the ranch is Tom Jackson, her stepfather, who is a cripple, with both legs paralyzed. Billy also learns that Salazar, the town's most noted shot, is looking for him. Investigating the mine, Billy falls down the shaft, is knocked senseless but recovers and follows a figure through the mine who climbs up through a trap door. The trap door leads to Jackson's bedroom. He learns that Jackson is a sleep-walker who can walk when sleeping but is crippled when awake. Salizar kidnaps Jean but Billy rescues her and captures Salizar. They are met by Jim Day, who shows a deputy sheriff's badge and takes charge of Salizar. But, Day is actually "The Phantom", who is after the ranch in order to gain possession of the still-valuable mine, and he releases Salizar who heads for the ranch to get rid of Jean and Billy.

Trapped
The Secret Service of the US Treasury learns that a new batch of counterfeit bills has been in circulation using the plates that Tris Stewart, having completed three years of a ten year prison sentence, had used that led to his conviction. They are able to make a deal with Stewart, in consideration for early parole, to stage a "mock" escape so that he can help them locate the source of the counterfeit bills and hopefully recover the plates to shut down this counterfeit operation for good. In discovering that the plates had been sold by Stewart's deadbeat former partner Sam Hooker to one of their old associates, Jack Sylvester, Stewart may have other things on his mind, such as reconnecting with his old girlfriend, Meg Dixon, a nightclub cigarette girl who now goes by the professional name Laurie Fredericks, and together living off the proceeds that those plates and resulting counterfeit bills can provide. What happens with Stewart and Laurie will not only be affected by Sylvester and his handlers in the Secret Service, but also by the presence of Johnny Hackett, who, assumed to be a racketeer in the way he easily throws around money in the nightclub, has his eye on Laurie for himself.

Full of Life
Married Angelenos, Italian Nick Rocco and Anglo Emily Rocco, live off of what Nick makes as a writer of fiction, which can be difficult at times because of the instability of their cash flow. They are currently overextended in recently having bought a house with the advance on Nick's latest book, and with they imminently expecting their first child. Those financial problems become even more so when unexpectedly they have to do some major structural repairs to the house. They can pay a contractor to do the work for an exorbitant fee, or ask Nick's father, stonemason Vittorio Rocco, who would probably do it for free. The issue with the latter is that overbearing and controlling Vittorio and Nick don't see eye-to-eye on anything in Vittorio's old world ways versus Nick's more modern outlook. Nick and Emily haven't even told his parents that they bought a house in Nick knowing that Papa would even be angry about its façade being stucco rather than stone. Opting for the latter in not having the money, Nick and Emily, eight months pregnant and she admitting she being a bundle of emotions in her hormones raging, travel to the Sacramento Valley to visit Nick's parents to "negotiate" with Papa to do the work for them. In their time together, that negotiation takes on multi-faceted dimensions beyond the house, from living in Los Angeles as opposed to the Sacramento Valley where Papa would build them a house next to his and Mama's, to Nick not having a steady job, about what Nick should write if he's going to write anyway, and Nick and Emily having had a civil Vegas wedding as opposed to a Catholic church ceremony in Nick being a lapsed Catholic and Emily having no religious convictions in her philosophies of life being more intellectually based, bringing up the issue of how they are going to raise not only their child but children.

Things couldn't be more perfect, until 1907, when first Molly dies, then the stock market crashes, wiping out the Stoddards' fortune, and Emilie is forced to return to France. The parting is difficult, for the teenage boys--Jack Stoddard (Billy Ray), David Stoddard (Steven Muller), Chris Stoddard (Wallace Chadwell), and Phillip Stoddard (Bobby Walberg)--had grown to depend on Emilie more after the loss of their mother, and Emilie had fallen in love with Adam. Seven years later, just before the beginning of World War I, the family's fortunes have improved, and Adam insists that Emilie return and stay on as part of the family--preserving her from the foreseeable fates of war. The four boys, all adults by now--Jack (Richard Denning), David ('Johnny Downs (I)'), Chris Stoddard (Robert Shaw), and Phillip Stoddard ('Charles Lind')--all serve in the military. Meanwhile, second son David brings home his carefree, gold-digging wife Hester (Susan Hayward), who moves into the family home while David is away at war. She degrades Emilies, cons Adam into believing that she is a sweet young thing, and attempts to seduce her brother-in-law Jack, who will have nothing to do with her. One night, the father sees a silhouette of the supposed lovers, but before he can identify them, Emilie enters the room from another door and pretends that she was the one with Jack. This cover-up strains Emilie's relationships with the boys and Adam and makes her an easy target for that guttersnipe Hester. The internecine war between the governess and Hester culminates in an out-and-out brawl. Adam unwittingly sides with Hester, who showers crocodile tears on his shoulder (a telling close-up reveals her wicked smile over his shoulder) while he comforts her. Hester's malicious personality is revealed to Adam's visiting cousin Phillippa (Helen Westley), and Hester is exposed as an uncontrollable vixen.
