It all begins when Noam, a young Israeli soldier, serves in the reserve forces and meets at a check point a Palestinian young man called Ashraf. Unfortunately, he has been pretending to his wife, Martha (Paulette Goddard), that he is a roving reporter, with more responsibility and more pay. Martha suggests he write a column based upon the question, "What great influence has a little child had upon your life?" Facing dire financial straits, Oliver goes over the head of the real roving reporter to the paper's editor and convinces him that the publisher wants Oliver to improve the column. Pursued by a bookie to whom he owes money, Oliver goes on the streets to find answers to Martha's question. In separate meetings, he talks to slow-talking musicians Lank (Henry Fonda) and Slim (James Stewart), noted film actress Gloria Manners (Dorothy Lamour) and stage magician Al (Fred MacMurray). They all tell Oliver different stories of how their lives were changed by "children" of various ages, negatively at first, but ultimately positively. But Oliver's deceptions are bound to catch up with him, both at the paper and with Martha, who had a particular reason for suggesting the question.

The Happy Thieves

1 hr 28 mins

A valuable painting belonging to Duchess Blanca (Alida Valli) is stolen at night from her castle in Spain by one of her house-guests, Jimmy Bourne (Rex Harrison), who replaces the original work with a duplicate. The debonair gentleman thief then passes the painting to his partner in crime, Eve Lewis (Rita Hayworth). However, the artwork is subsequently stolen from them by a man acting on behalf of Dr. Victor Muñoz (Grégoire Aslan), the cousin of the duchess. Eve wants to go straight, but Victor blackmails her and Jim, demanding that they steal a renowned painting (The Second of May 1808) by Francisco de Goya from the Prado Museum in Madrid. An exact copy of the painting is created by artist Jean Marie Calbert (Joseph Wiseman), and a switch is planned to take place during the farewell bullfight of a famous matador, Cayetano (Virgilio Teixeira), whom the duchess intends to wed. During the bullfight, Victor secretly shoots Cayetano in order to create a diversion that will assist the art theft. News of the matador's death spreads quickly across the city and distracts the guards at the Prado Museum, allowing Jim and Jean to begin switching the two large paintings. Jean suddenly leaves the room before they are finished, but Eve arrives in time to help Jim complete the switch before the guards return. Later, Jean turns up and goes with Jim to the house of Victor, where they find him dead. They are then framed for this murder by the duchess, who had killed Victor to avenge the death of Cayetano. Using the stolen Goya painting as a bargaining chip, Jim negotiates with the authorities, and he secures freedom for Jean and a reduced prison sentence for himself. Eve vows to wait for him.

A meditation on isolation and intersection in the big city - the layered story of three characters who find courage to move to the next stage of life through profound encounters with strangers they meet on their daily routes. Rose, an optometrist paralyzed by crushing grief after the death of her infant, has built a wall around herself, unable to relate to her estranged husband or anyone else. When an elderly patient, a painter losing his eyesight, begins to visit her office unannounced, Rose registers how alone he is, urging him to reach out and ask for help--something neither does easily. Meanwhile Simon, a late-blooming teenager with an overbearing mother, photographs people at a distance with a borrowed long lens. One day, Rose, beautiful and melancholy in a vibrant scarf, comes into focus in his camera sight. The pictures he shoots become a conduit for each of them to touch something deep within and expand their confining existence. - Caroline Libresco
