An overlooked middle child finds himself in the unexpected spotlight when he realizes his family's terrible Christmas day keeps repeating. As the only one experiencing the day over and over, he decides to use his unique gift to give the holidays a makeover and his family a Christmas they will never forget.

As a child, Barbara is orphaned when her settler parents perish trying to cross a California desert. She is rescued and raised by Jefferson Worth, who dreams of irrigating the desert. Fifteen years later, Willard Holmes, the chief engineer of a company intent on diverting the Colorado River to do just that, arrives and is smitten with Barbara. However, he has a rival for her affections: local cowboy Abe Lee, who realizes, toward the end of the picture, that Barbara's love for him will never be anything more than the love a sister feels for a brother. Willard Holmes' greedy employer, meanwhile, refuses to spend the money to reinforce his gigantic water project. This results in a catastrophic flood, the visual and dramatic highlight of the film. Barbara is impressed by Willard's heroism, and he promises to return to marry her after he has conquered the Colorado River and turned the desert into a bountiful paradise.

When Selby arrives as the new ranch owner, he is assumed to be just another cowboy attracted to Ann Hepburn so he takes a job as a dude cowhand. Hyslip then blames the new dude, and sends his men out to kill him.

The Durango Valley is being pillaged by a mysterious bandit known only as "The Shadow." Keene Cordner, over the protests of ranch foreman Tanner gets a job on John McKay's ranch. The sheriff, investigating a killing, comes to the ranch and arrests Keen based on the eye-witness testimony of a deputy. Tanner helps him escape and hides him out in a cabin. Keene bitterly declares that since the Sheriff has unjustly made him an outlaw, he will become one with the idea of running down the real Shadow.

In New Orleans, English teacher of the high school Rampart High, Will Gerard, and his wife, musician Laura Gerard, are in love with each other. One night, Laura leaves a rehearsal and is assaulted, while Will is playing chess with his friend Jimmy. Will is visiting her in hospital when, out of the blue, a stranger named Simon tells him that he belongs to an organization of vigilantes and offers to eliminate the assailant. In return, the organization would want a favor from Will in the future. Will agrees, and the criminal is murdered. Six months later, Simon collects his debt with Will. He demands that Will kill Alan Marsh, a pedophile. Will accidentally kills Alan and soon he learns that the victim was an awarded journalist that was investigating the organization. Now he seeks evidences to prove his innocence but the network of the organization is powerful and is seeking Will out to eliminate him.

Jennifer, a young, ambitious executive running promotions at a failing Boston mall comes up with a genius promotional gimmick to save her workplace and position herself for advancement: hold a "Hunky Santa" contest to replace the old Mall Santa. Billy the Kid learns that someone in Red Rock is impersonating him, causing a warrant to be issued for his arrest. On the way there he and Fuzzy Jones witness a hold-up by a gang of outlaws led by Kate Shelly and Billy decides to join the gang in order to clear his name. Kate sends Billy to rob the stagecoach and then has the sheriff tipped off so that Billy will be caught. Billy captures two of Kate's gang and learns about the tip-off, and tells Kate he couldn't pull off the robbery because the sheriff had been informed. Kate gives Billy the assignment of helping her rob the Red Rock Bank and,this time, Billy tells the Sheriff but he also warns Kate not to go through with the robbery because he knows she will be caught. But Kate, suspicious of Billy, has him imprisoned and rides on over to Red Rock to rob the bank. Kate is wounded in the hold-up and flees with the Sheriff in hot pursuit. Meanwhile, Billy has escaped and arrives in time to save Kate from falling from her horse. He takes her to his hideout and is trying to help the wounded girl when her chief henchman, Dillon , shows up.

Dan follows Cooper to the cabin headquarters of the gang, where he listens in as the masked boss of the gang tells Smeed his plans to raid Molly's ranch. Dan is captured and the Boss tells Smeed to kill him, but Smeed lets Dan escape after telling Dan he was not the killer of Molly's father. Dan gets to Molly's ranch just as the guardianship papers are about to be signed and warns her against Mills. He is arrested and is been taken back to town by Mills and the Judge. The latter pair get into an argument, Mills shoots the Judge and escapes. Coming back, Dan finds Smeed near the body of the Judge, and Smeed tells Dan that the Judge was his father. Beeman and a group of riders come along and Dan sends them to Molly's ranch to defend it against the raiders. During the raid, the masked Boss captures Molly, and Dan and Smeed set out in pursuit.

Unable to legally capture and sell a herd of protected wild horses, corrupt rancher Rance Macgowan uses his trained killer horse, Volcano, to substitute for the real leader of the herd and cause havoc and death among the ranches. With the government about to drop the restrictions on rounding up the herd, the Three Mesquiteers find themselves in the middle of the controversy after their friend, Sheriff Miller is killed by Volcano.

When Jesse learns that Krager is cheating settlers, he and his gang rob trains to obtain money for them to purchase their land. Krager, finding a Jesse look alike in Burns, hires him to wreak havoc on the ranchers. When Jesse kills Burns he switches clothes and goes after the culprits.
