Blonde Ice
Is a character study of Claire Cummings, the San Francisco Tribune's society columnist who aspires to the life of those about who she writes, both in wanting the money and the prestige. The easiest way for her to accomplish her goal is to marry into it, although a husband may become unwanted baggage if he learns her motives, meaning that she has to get rid of him in some way. Her getting married leaves other past lovers in her wake, including newspaper colleagues Les Burns and Al Herrick, both who would have wanted to marry her themselves but who did not have the stature to allow her to reach her goal. While somewhat admitting to herself that she may have loved only one, she still would not be averse to using him to his demise if it got her money and power.

Cutter's Way
Drifter Richard Bone is temporarily living with his friends, married couple Alex and Mo Cutter, in Santa Barbara, while working for their mutual friend, George Swanson, as a salesman at his boat dealership. Rich and Mo may have ended up together if Rich had stuck around at the time, something that Mo can't help but think about now in Alex long having dropped out of life the result of his experience in Vietnam, which included losing an eye, an arm and a leg, he largely turning to the bottle to cope. Only when he is brought in as a suspect does Rich comes to the realization that what he saw off in the distance one rainy night in a back alley was the disposal of a dead body, the victim seventeen year old Vicky Duran. Spotting him in a crowd, Rich is "certain" that who he saw dump the body is one of Santa Barbara's most upstanding citizens, oil baron J.J. Cord. What Rich and Alex discover about Cord and his movements that evening fit with him being the perpetrator. Bringing in Vicky's sister, Val Duran, who wants justice for Vicky, Alex comes up with a scheme to expose Cord as the murderer, that scheme - sending Cord a blackmail letter, he responding to such with the requested moneys proving he the murderer - which requires Rich's cooperation as the front man. While this plot seems to have brought Alex back to life, it may be the impetus for forever changing the relationships between Rich, Alex and Mo.

Years later, the man, a carnival charlatan, attracts the attention of Dr. Mesmer, a pioneer in the study of hypnotism. Balsamo rejects Mesmer's plea that he use his power for healing and, instead, decides to use it to seek wealth and fame. He changes his name to Count Cagliostro, and achieves fame throughout Europe by mixing hypnotism with mysticism and showmanship. He is called to cure a girl, Lorenza, held by De Montagne, because she resembles Marie Antoinette, wife of the heir to the throne of France. Cagliostro decides to join De Montagne and Madame du Barry in a plot to seize the power by discrediting the future Queen. Cagliostro achieves his revenge on De Montagne by persuading him to hang himself. He makes Lorenza marry him but can never make her love him. Her love is for Gilbert de Rezel, the captain of Marie Antoinette's guard. In a dramatic court scene, Cagliostro's power of hypnotism is turned against him by Dr. Mesmer and he is seen as a madman. His faithful gypsy friends, Gitano and Zoraida, try to help him escape but he is killed by de Rezel in a roof-top duel.

Emilio
'Emilio' is the soulful tale of a young man (19 years) who leaves his village in Mexico looking for his kidnapped sister. His journey leads him to Los Angeles, where we see the city through the eyes of a penniless illegal immigrant on a desperate quest. The City of Angels itself becomes in a sense the second character of this movie as Emilio's needle-in-a-haystack search takes him through the gritty contrasts of Skid Row, East L.A., Echo Park, Watts, Torrance, Venice Beach, Beverly Hills, and the West Hollywood hills. The panorama of characters he encounters include Mexican day laborers, drug dealers, transients, skateboarders, disco queens, actors, and upwardly mobile socialites constituting at once a searing social criticism and celebration of a city. As it moves towards its inexorable conclusion, this coming of age story comes into its own above all as an heroic portrait of determination.
