This Is My Black

1 hr 6 mins

In This Is My Black, students at Berks County's Pine Forge Academy display that Black youth with agency can persist even in a world trying to stifle them. Opening with a glorious and rhythm-filled musical number, the students spotlight their gifts as well as their awareness of the precarity of Black life. Further expressed in choir rehearsal, where personal struggles yield results, a vulnerable moment allows the students to reveal the hardship of navigating a world where Black death consumes the media. The violence of police brutality reaches close to home for these students, who also have to grapple with the difficulties of being teenagers. However, even when faced with the realities of anti-Blackness, these teenagers move through each scene with earnest dialogue and lean heavily into their faith as they continue to use music as a path to express their fears and hopes for the future.

1 hr 42 mins

Meet former gravedigger and doorman Ike Reilly. At 40 years old he landed a major label recording contract and in true rock and roll fashion he bought his family a dream home. He took his band out on the road where they became what The New York Times called "one of the best live bands in America." Despite 9 albums, a cult following and immense critical acclaim Reilly has failed to achieve commercial success. Academy Award winning director James Marsh says, "Ike's stuff sounds like it should be enormously successful and it just isn't and I have no idea why." Exploring Ike's career, the film culls over 40 years of footage masterfully weaving in songs that reveal a complicated and formidable artist with an incredibly charismatic family. Struggling with booze and in the face of foreclosure, Ike finds redemption in music, art and family as his 3 sons begin performing with his band.

My Pet and Me

1 hr 19 mins

My Pet and Me is an endearing and tragicomic portrait of a couple of colourful people and their beloved pets. In a light-hearted quest, director Johan Kramer explores the meaning of love between humans and animals, gently touching on themes such as loneliness, comfort, and loss. His intimate approach produces several heart-warming and sometimes absurdist scenes. We meet house pig Frans, who keeps on jumping in and out of the trunk to find a nice place to walk, a hairdresser with a house full of hairless cats, a therapeutic pug, a champion dog-dancing, a giant spiritual snail, and a world-famous Instagram cat. What connects their owners is the boundless love for their animals, but also the apparent void they try to fill with them. A divorce, a baby on the way, autism, death, the search for a partner or the meaning of life - the owners find a listening ear in their pets. The film subtly plays with the boundaries of friendship, interdependence, and the concept of egalitarianism within human-animal relationships. Who exactly needs who?As in his previous films, Johan pays a cinematographic tribute to the ordinary Dutch landscape and its households. While we hear the animals smacking, sniffing, and grunting around, we are carried along their living experience. Enhanced by the specially composed music for each animal, from bombastic pig trumpets to alien-like hypnotic snail ambient, Johan and his crew know how to capture the atmosphere flawlessly.

In the midst of a devastating economic crisis, the country has to choose between two radically different presidential candidates - Andrés Arauz, a young leftist economist, and Guillermo Lasso, a wealthy right-wing banker running for the third time. With unfettered access to Arauz's campaign, the film offers a granular picture of postmodern Latin American politics as well as the timid candidate's difficulties in imposing his vision and discourse. It follows a gripping, nail-bitter campaign, in which Arauz struggles to challenge the old guard, tormented by a recent past dominated by specters and betrayals.

Studio One Forever

1 hr 36 mins

From 1974-1994, Studio One and its adjoining live music venue, The Backlot, became symbols of hope and community for gay men during tumultuous times. Amidst the rise of gay rights, disco's heyday, and the devastating AIDS crisis, the club offered sanctuary from rampant homophobia and police oppression. It was where legends like Liza Minnelli and Eartha Kitt performed, and rising stars like Roseanne Barr and Rosie O'Donnell ignited their careers. Fast forward 26 years, and as West Hollywood faces the demolition of this iconic building, a community uproar emerges to preserve its history. Through personal accounts, the documentary delves into Studio One's story against the backdrop of a progressing gay liberation clashing with 80s conservatism and the escalating AIDS nightmare. Man Enough to Heal

In this feature-length documentary, we will tell the stories of men who are healing from the scars of childhood sexual abuse. While the statistics are horrifying for both sexes, the media and society seem to treat boy victims different from girl victims and this film will shine a light on the disparity. Lives full of shame, lack of self-worth and body dysmorphia as well as an often-continual fight to believe they are man enough or macho in the face of hiding scars from their childhood. The fear of being seen as a potential perpetrator because of their sexual abuse is a real systemic problem for men recovering from childhood sexual abuse. While the film will talk to some experts, the film will focus on personal stories and how these brave men have lived through their trauma.

Israelism

1 hr 24 mins

Israel is central to the political and cultural life of the American Jewish community. But it has also become a deeply divisive subject, as painful cracks have emerged within the Jewish community over the Israel-Palestine conflict, inspiring argument, protest and even censorship. ISRAELISM explores the past, present and future of the relationship between American Jews and Israel. Dozens of American Jewish thinkers, community leaders and activists share stories of falling in love with Israel, and competing visions for a Jewish future, while Israelis and Palestinians describe how their lives are affected by the decisions of a community half a world away. Israelism asks how and why Israel became the cornerstone of American Judaism, what the consequences have been, and what will happen as divisions continue grow.
