A Struggle for Home: The Crimean Tatars

0 hrs 44 mins

For hundreds of years, Crimea was home to the Crimean Tatars, a Muslim-Turkic people. They were the masters of the land, the indigenous population. But that all changed when the Russian Empire conquered the peninsula in 1783. Since then, the Tatars have struggled to reclaim their home from Russian domination. In the process, they have suffered ethnic and religious persecution, including a Soviet genocide that saw their entire population forcibly and brutally deported from Crimea to Central Asia in 1944. When the Soviet Union collapsed, many Tatars thought they finally would be free and secure in their homeland. But in February 2014, those dreams were dashed when Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded and re-annexed the peninsula. This documentary film tells the little-known story of the Crimean Tatars. It features interviews with Crimean residents, Tatar activists, Russian nationalists, survivors of the 1944 deportation, and historians. Among the many interviewed include Russian nationalist Sergey Aksyonov, who is now the Putin-backed prime minister of the peninsula, and Mustafa Dzhemilev, the leader of the Crimean Tatar people. The film recounts the rich and often tragic history of the Tatars, from ancient times to today. It is a story of betrayal, courage and, above all, hope. For despite all that they have faced, the Crimean Tatars remain undaunted in their struggle for freedom.

The Instrumental Chemist

0 hrs 59 mins

The Instrumental Chemist is a documentary film that presents the remarkable life and legacy of chemist, inventor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Arnold O. Beckman. Arnold Beckman transformed science. He created a series of brilliantly designed instruments that enabled scientists to answer old questions faster and more accurately, as well as ask brand new questions. He recognized that measurements were at the center of scientific discovery, and he worked with people across its fields and disciplines to push his ideas forward. His instruments enabled scientists to focus on discoveries rather than tinker with wires and meters. Less tangible than the instruments he left behind, but equally important to his legacy, are the vast number of students and young scientists for whom he served as an unparalleled role model of a visionary technologist. Although a list of awards and recognitions he received in his lifetime is impressive-they include three presidential awards, membership into both the National Academy of Science and the National Inventors Hall of Fame-it is perhaps the noble way Arnold Beckman conducted his everyday life that is the most telling. He was a man of humor, integrity, wisdom, and devotion. The Instrumental Chemist presents a full portrait of the man, detailing his key contributions to the world and highlighting the impact they have on our lives today.
