Jessie's Dad

0 hrs 50 mins

A blue-collar "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Jessie's Dad" follows Lunsford's journey from a West Florida trailer park to Capitol Hill and state capitals and as he fights to convince lawmakers to wise up and crack down on sex predators. This hour-long documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at a grieving father's struggle to make a difference as he adapts to a peculiar brand of celebrity. Lunsford is driven by the knowledge that police could have saved Jessie's life. John Couey, an absconded sex offender living across the street, abducted her from her bedroom on a rainy February night in 2005. Three weeks later, police unearthed her body from a shallow grave in his back yard. Physical evidence proves he raped her and buried her alive. Instead of raging against a system that failed his daughter, Lunsford decides to work within it to effect change. He pushes for legislation requiring severe minimum sentencing for child sex offenders and GPS monitoring for those released. A few months after her death, Florida passes "Jessie's Law." Lunsford treks across the country to convince other states to follow suit. Among his challenges and triumphs, "Jessie's Dad" features his two trips to Utah. During the first one, legislators shun him. Two years later, he aims for a unanimous passing of Jessie's Law. Lunsford goes head to head with legislators, judges and prosecutors who oppose the mandatory minimum and finds himself at a loss when his 18-year-old son faces a charge of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Josh could get life if prosecuted under Ohio's new Jessie's Law. "Jessie's Dad" - winner of a Carole Fielding production grant and the Direct Cinema Limited Outstanding Documentary Award - offers insight into a complex, controversial character who's transforming in front of our eyes and, in the process, transforming our notion of child protection.

Marie

1 hr 52 mins

In the mid-1970s, Marie Ragghianti left an abusive marriage and moved back home with her mother Virginia in Tennessee to eke out a better life for herself and her three young children. She waited tables while completing the degree requirements at Vanderbilt to obtain a B.A. in English and Psychology. She is unapologetic in asking college acquaintance Eddie Sisk for a job when he is appointed legal counsel for the just-elected governor Ray Blanton. In what he considers a win-win situation, Eddie offers Marie a job as the Extradition Officer for the state, which she accepts. From there, Marie quickly moves up the chain of command, first becoming the liaison to the Governor on Parole Board recommendations--the role which is meant to be a two-way street, where there is an understood quid pro quo in recommendations from the Board to the Governor, and from the Governor back to the Board--then becoming the Parole Board Chief. While working in these jobs, Marie becomes more and more uncomfortable in her working relationship with Eddie, and the Governor, who seems to be increasingly wanting parole for inmates who have no grounds to be paroled, and even worse, wanting full pardons for inmates who have no grounds to be pardoned. As Marie becomes more and more vocally opposed to what the Governor and Eddie want, she will learn how far they will go to silence and/or discredit her. In return, the Governor and Eddie learn that Marie will not take what is happening to her sitting down, especially as she believes she has done nothing wrong in carrying out the responsibilities of any of her state duties.

Super Size Me

1 hr 40 mins

Several legal suits have been brought against McDonald's Restaurants that they are knowingly selling food that is unhealthy. Some of the court decisions have stated that the plaintiffs would have a claim if they could prove that eating the food every day for every meal is dangerous. As such, documentarian Morgan Spurlock conducts an unscientific experiment using himself as the guinea pig: eat only McDonald's for thirty days, three meals a day. If he is asked by the clerk if he would like the meal super sized, he has to say yes. And by the end of the thirty days, he will have had to have eaten every single menu item at least once. Before starting the experiment, he is tested by three doctors - a general practitioner, a cardiologist and a gastroenterologist - who pronounce his general health to be outstanding. They will also monitor him over the thirty days to ensure that he is not placing his health into irreparable damage. He also consults with a dietitian/nutritionist and an exercise physiologist, the latter who also deems him to be above average fitness. As it mimics the lifestyle of those who eat fast food, he will also do no exercise for the thirty days, limiting himself to under 5,000 steps per day (the approximate equivalent of 2½ miles). These health and medical experts have some predictions about his general health and wellness by the end of the experiment. His vegan chef girlfriend also has some predictions about how this experiment will affect his mood and therefore their relationship. As he goes through the experiment, he speaks to a number of people - many experts in their respective fields - on the pros and cons of the fast food lifestyle. Just over halfway through the experiment, it is evident that even the experts can be wrong, and not in a good way.

420: The Documentary

1 hr 32 mins

"Seven youthful people (representing the nation's 'youth') question why our government is still arresting people for mere possession of marijuana, even though our last three presidents, and many politicians smoked pot in their youth. Footage from 420 civil disobedience festivals is juxtaposed against ironic statements from politicos who continue to misrepresent the truth - supposedly out of concern for the very youth who have fallen prey to marijuana prohibition laws. To underscore this hypocrisy, 420 illuminates stories of college students, and others, who have been arrested, shot by police, and even murdered for mere possession of pot. 420 scans the history of pot - from the 30s to present day - exposing how the public has been duped, over and over by false propaganda and political agendas. Numerous law enforcement retirees provide shocking commentary and outspoken regret over a policy they helped enforce, only to realize it was a tragic mistake they now want to reverse.
